When I was in Germany, I noticed their recycling is incredibly efficient and vast - public recycling containers on the curbs and receptacles in the grocery stores! I would love to learn more about what can and cannot be recycled!

Only about 10% of what we recycle actually gets recycled. Part of this is because of confusion, and part is because of the big limitations with recycling. Also, the "recycling" symbol on products is not truly a "recycling" symbol. It is telling you the type of plastic. Only some types of plastic are actually recyclable. Rhett is exactly right that the answer is to stop using plastic products. We need to move towards using reusable or biodegradable products instead.

Sustainability Professional here, let me know if you all want additional info! Compost those tissues and any other paper product that has short fibers. Quick tip related to the gum wrapper: it's almost always true that items made of more than one material are not recyclable. Coffee cups are a limited exception in some areas.

I happen to live in one of those areas where they claim to recycle but the trucks dump at a landfill (Union County, NC). They still have us use separate bins and send separate trucks but it was found that there is no recycling center to which the contents are taken. They still claim that they recycle but when asked, they can't tell you where/how. It's awesome.

We always rinse our recyclables before tossing them into our bin. Plus, it smells better than having those yucky food particles left on everything. We use hot water, just like Rhett said. Hot water works very well with rinsing things.

About the shampoo bottle: it takes lot more energy to recycle glass than plastic. Also the transport of glass is more polluting because it's so heavy. Aluminum is the most recyclable container so maybe that if anything.

The point about using glass instead of plastic is to reuse it, like back in the day when people reused milk and soda bottles or used metal or glass containers to hold things like flour or sugar. Honestly, we could do the same thing with plastic containers as well. We just need more companies to provide a way to refill them.

Where I live, (Eastern Ontario, Canada) there are soooo many products that are technically ♻️, but depending on your municipality and/or recycling facility, only certain things are actually acceptable in your ♻️ bin. It's frustrating bcus if it's actually able to be recycled, then it should be done so at every facility. 😡
