Perfect review! Spot on. I sold my laptop a few months ago and tried to force myself to use a tablet only. I've had the same experiences as you describe. Truth be told, just yesterday I actually listed my tablet for sale and then 24 hours later decided to keep it anyway. I can't load any software I need so when at home I actually tunnel into my desktop and use Remote Desktop/Teamviewer to get things done. So essentially the tablet is still a consumption device and I'm only using it as a screen to do all the heavy lifting on my actual desktop computer. Hardly ideal... If we could load a proper OS and software on them, that would be amazing!

The problems you highlight are very valid. The biggest issue is that the top manufacturers produce both windows/macOS machines and tablets. Their incentive is maximizing their profits by pushing people to both types of machines for different purposes. That de-incentivizes program writers to optimize for true cross-platform productivity.

I'm concerned that... when I'm traveling the real laptops batteries only last a half hour. That doesn't work for me. I might be able to recharge the battery only 1 or 2 times a day while on the go. And I don't need entertainment, only basic word processing, internet basic (text only is OK),and sometimes basic video. I need to make a tablet somehow work for traveling and working together. So I hope ppl can suggest how to get this to work. Laptops don't work for travel because the batteries being trash mean I can't actually travel with them.

If yours works I'm happy for you. It might also have to do with how macs don't run so many programs at the same time, which would make them more energy efficient.

anyone thinking of going with a tablet as opposed to a laptop, i would say this: - the pros are that you have total portability and a perfect device for media consumption and gaming. it can be a workstation, but you really have to finangle with it to get the most out of a tablet for productivity. -the cons are....well a tablet is, at the end of the day, a mobile device. yes tablets are extremely powerful these days, but you will be dealing with streamlined mobile software when doing your various tasks, if you are okay with that.

You literally described my exact issue - I’ve got an Ipad, love it for its size and portability, and with the magic keyboard its great for sitting on the couch with and then putting in my bag when I go to work, but I find I can’t do a lot of things on it. No VS Code, file management is awful, and MS Office (and even google docs) is limited. I need a laptop thats sized like a tablet

I had your issue as well. I purchased iPad Pro M1 a year ago, then realised how awful it was (because of pointer, limited access to apps such as Parsec [the APP I was going to connect my computer with hardware accel]) so I gave it to my brother, then I purchased Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra (which was another mistake), I thought it would be good enough thanks to Samsung Dex (spoiler alert: awful experience), no vscode workspaces (as you mentioned, tablets don't support opfs as 100%), activity manager is too bad (alt+tab) parsec was not working with Samsung Galaxy Bookcover, irritating bugs related with custom accessibility permissions (mouse is not working properly if an app installed accessibility driver). People need to make videos like that to warn potencial customers who thought same as you and me, yes, ipad or galaxy tab might offer good experience for sending mail, browsing (Kiwi Browser on android gives you almost full power of Chrome [devtools, extensions]), but it's not capable of replacing a laptop. I order macbook air m2, let's see if that works :D Also, you can take a look at Huawei Matebook E Go (consumer.huawei.com/en/laptops/matebook-e-go/) I will switch to this when it's released in my country

As a videomaker i do travel a lot with my tablet. But only when i know that theres no need to edit on the field. I use it for review footage (and photos), basic edits (create ideas for ex), take notes, scripts, send and receive e-mails and what not. I think the real problem is when the person wants more then it can provide due to its limitations. But oterwise its a great tool when you know what to expect from it. I do consider the protability one of the most important things on my workflow today. I do like your video, your points are for sure valid tho.

totally agree with you. been trying to replace my laptop with ipadair5, it's so frustrating, not worth my time trying anymore. whenever i just wanna see through stuff, i can use my phone. any serious business related documents had to be processed by a laptop. even the simplest excel data manipulation had to be done by a laptop. any serious note taking had to be re-done by a laptop, cause i couldnt even recognize my own handwriting written on a hurry. if i read books with kindle app more than an hour, my eyes hurt cause of backlight (yes, i tried dark mode and lowering brightness) if im carrying my mouse and keyboard with an ipad, i feel ridiculous cause i could just bring my macbook air. so what do i use my ipad for? i dunno, netflix?

I recently ditched my Laptop for a table, its all about the software, you have google sheets instead of Excel which is much cleaner on the tablet (and free), there is very little my laptop can do that my tablet can't as far as productivity, and also, my work logging software only works on android, so I can edit my data logging maps from the tablet, which is far superior to doing it on my phone. You need a good file manager as well, solid explorer is just amazing, you can work from zipped files browsing and running them without extracting, you can zip files with it, you can quick share to your phone with no cord and it will move 3gb in about a minute thru Bluetooth. Overall, for my purposes the tablet is actually better, the battery life, my tablet even works with a monitor. I really am impressed at first you will think you can't do it though, just breathe, install what you need and you are good to go

This is indeed a very honest review. Tablet is just a toy. There are some people who have been branwashed by Apple advertising and worship Apple and foolishly thing Tablet can replace laptop. The phone can replace tablet. Tablet is useless. You only need a phone and a laptop. The phone can do anything tablet can do. You do not need a tablet if you have a smartphone. If you feel phone screen size is small, the tablet screen size is not big enough either. For people want big screen size, use laptop, monitor, TV or projector. Currently trying out a Surface Pro 3 as a replacement for my laptop. I have it set as a dual boot between Windows 11 Pro (debloated) and Zorin 17.1. I am realistic and acknowledge this isn't a gaming setup but that's not what I ever use it for. For my purposes, it works very well, especially with the bonus of a touchscreen and stylus. Have to say, the SP3 is a highly-underrated tablet.

MacOS on the iPad is not needed, the interface is not optimised for the iPad screen size. If the MacOS interface gets optimised perfectly for the iPad, then it wont be perfect for a laptop. I feel what apple shud do is provide some more professional apps + better file management . A bigger iPad (say 14") with a pricey keyboard accessory is not needed if we cud spend less money and buy the MacBook air or the entry level Macbook pro.

I agree with you 100% But one table I bought on ebay for 100 bucks is a 1.8hz 10.5 inch I believe is the size is a Chuwi made in china that has both Windows 10 and Android with 256gig hd space 4 gigs of ram I have windows update to accept Win 11 but the Andriod is stuck it's slow booting but does ok-ish. So almost the best of both and it has usb c hdmi mini usb 3.0 and you can put in a sim card and extra storage sd.

It’s windows on Arm.I wouldn’t touch it with a 10m stick..windows on arm sucked big time.A few months ago I tried an arm device (Samsung book go).it sucked big time..I mean I would even say pentiums and athlons are miles better (because even if they are slow.they work)but with arm nothing works and everything that is an x86 app is an slide show (which is most of the apps).the only saving grace was the battery life (but it only increased the agonising experience).I couldn’t use for a day.I returned it and bought a normal laptop.if you’re planning to buy a laptop on ARM get a MacBook and nothing else.I would even recommend people to buy android tablet and iPads than windows on ARM devices.they are nothing but slim paper weight for even a normal user..

Actually the question is not whether Tablets can replace a Laptop. But whether all the requirements of the individual using the device is fulfilled the tablet. Iam a dentist, and I also own a pharmacy. Both my clinic and my pharmacy have a laptop/desktop beacuse the softwares required there are never made for tablets. But in my Home I get all my work done from my Galaxy Tab S7 +. I never felt that I could not do a job because I was working on a Tablet. Actually not everybody needs Premiere pro or DaVinci resolve. Most apps have an online version which can be accessed by browser be it safari on ipad or Samsung internet on Samsung tab. Actually everyones needs are different. And for many people the worh they do can be done via a Tablet.....be it iPad or a Galaxy Tab.

My realization about tablets is that they work best for graphics artists, people who love to draw, and those who need to sign documents most of the time. Otherwise, it will work like an external monitor for either a smartphone or a laptop. That's it. Buying a smartphone is best match with a tablet of the SAME brand if possible.

@@mobiscrub Agreed but all those can be solved by a phone, Laptop, TV and a $300 tablet, if needed. Believe me, been looking to buy Galaxy Tab S7 for a year now. Its price and me having the above always puts me off. Tablets failed in 2013. If they don't do anything radical now, it will again. Very thin sliver of people actually want their everything on one $1000 device. Which means, apart from the cheap ones from Xiaomi or Samsung, tablets have very little merit. That's all.

im using my apple tablet its really good for all kinds of the productivity and studies its just really suits of my needs and besides all of that its easy to carry and portable and compact and i use my accessories keyboard mouse and my case its just like a mini laptop but it cannot be replace a laptop and not as full blown as that but their still a thing you can do with the same purpose on it i like the capabilities of this tablet that can handle almost everything its easy to use and really good for travels or outings and for work/school at the end of the day this is only a tablet and not a laptop you will only need laptop if your a power user
