In theory (assuming the wheels are perfectly balanced) the bike should be a lot more stable due to the gyroscopic effect of the high-mass spinning tires. (I think???) It would be really interesting to see a follow up video where the tires are a lot more balanced to test and see if that actually holds true. If anyone is an expert on this topic please reply to me with some insight!

Fill the tire with tungsten mixed with silicone then spin the tire. The centrifugal force will balance out all the tungsten/silicone mix. This would also work if you could find a way to spin just the tire. Then you could just pour the mix right into the open tire.

There are other advantages of the tungsten bike too. For example, on a regulation bike whenever you hit a dog you normally end up thrown off the bike. With this thing, the extra unsprung weight helps you power through the mutt, either flattening it or casting it to one side, allowing you to stay upright on your bike and continue your ride.

the wheels stop just fine when braking, so what's being observed is actually the friction between the road and the tire that's stopping the bike. The added weight plays more of a role here because the bike is pushing harder downward. If the break pads had a set limit, and weren't able to stop the wheel from moving so efficiently, you'd probably have different results because weight plays more of an inertial role in that kind of situation. Although, at that point, you'd basically just doing the coasting test all over again. The results would be essentially the same.
@jakegarrett8109
@jakegarrett8109 2 жыл бұрын
The powder was creating a lot of damping effect, which is why you went shorter distance. By all other physics it should have went further (lower top speed = less air drag, same pedal distance at lower speed means more energy input into system assuming you pedaled just as hard). Braking of course was just down to you going faster with the lighter wheels, you'd need to brake at the same speed (so do your max speed test or pedal up to 20 mph then hit the brakes once you get to a line). Max speed would only be slower due to damping of the powder (which is a great way to dampen by the way, roller coasters sometimes fill the rails with sand), as well as any wobbliness. Handling would be interesting, the gyroscopic force would be very noticeable but at low speeds I think you might notice the tires being wobbly just about as much (its a little bicycle after all, and even on my motorcycle with feet up over the handlebars you barely have to move your hips and you can go from nearly laying down on one side to nearly laying down on the other < or last month, went all the way to the ground, LOL!). At high speeds it would be kind of fun to play with the gyroscopic effects because it would be insanely stable but in high jumps turning the front wheel would be kind of cool because then you could spin the bike around in the air which you probably can't normally feel (at least much) on a bicycle if you were doing BMX style tricks. Cool tests and video, cheers!

With the brake tests you should re do them as you were skidding the wheel on the rear causing the braking distance to increase you should lean back over the rear wheel when doing tests like this but it's a great video 👍
@llearch
@llearch 2 жыл бұрын
When skidding like that, it's real hard to lean back as your weight is being thrown forwards, effectively - the stopping effect of the wheels is pulling the bike backwards, but your body is only being pulled backwards by the contact points (seat, hands, feet) and hence is later to get the impulse. End result is, you naturally move forwards when the bike starts slowing down, and the faster the slowdown, the more dramatic the result. Which means front-wheel braking would be more effective, but then you run the risk of going arse-over-teakettle over the handlebars, and that would be very bad - not least because the bike would likely land on you, and it's a lot heavier now. :-(

Okay, to ride a bike and swivel around tge cone you have to act like a gyroscope and think of a pendulum(the bike) attatched to a wood plank (you) then you have free rein over control, you can lean your bike almost horizontal with enough practice for a really sharp turn or road burn 🔥

Prediction for the tests: Agility might be worse Coasting will be better (more mass) Ghost rider test? Not sure, it'll have a lower center of gravity, so at least different.

You'd be correct, but since they used powder and it changed the results. The powder was creating a lot of damping effect, which is why they went shorter distance. By all other physics it should have went further (lower top speed = less air drag, same pedal distance at lower speed means more energy input into system assuming you pedaled just as hard). Braking of course was just down to going faster with the lighter wheels, they'd need to brake at the same speed.

You have an impressive workshop, why don't you machine out of some 1" plate some solid wheels and leave the lip to mount the bike tire, I bet they would be more balanced
