Riding anything technical on drop bars is so hard. Flat bars so much better for control/braking on difficult terrain regardless of bike/tire choice

I recently followed my mates to the local track with my gravel bike. The climbs were easy, regardless of surface. The real killers are the rocks and roots on descents. Extra moisture thrown into those surfaces dial up the difficulty many times. And the arms and legs take a right beating from being suspension. Nothing but respect for what Tony is capable of in cx tyres

Yeah, just came back from a week of taking a Canyon Grail with Tailfin, frame and bar bag from Garmisch to Riva del Garda…, some bits would have been better served with my fully, others with the road bike (Mortirolo for instance), but the gravel bikes are incredibly capable. Something a bit wider than 33 may have been a bit better for Tony, but bravo and well done for sure.

When I saw Tony, I turned on the closed caption feature. Not surprisingly, CC struggled almost as much as I do. I'm waiting for youtube to implement a "shoulder shrug" emoji. Or it could just write [Tony says something Northern]. He's like the Keith Richards of the channel: You don't always understand him, but you know that whatever he's saying is probably cool AF.

I’ve been riding a CX bike (my winter road bike but on 38mms I could squeeze in the frame) on mostly blue MTB trails for the past couple of years but with a 9 and 10 yr old in tow so at relatively slow speeds. Absolutely agree with Tony - it’s doable, but not particularly fun. Bought an XC MTB a couple of weeks ago and the difference in ease of handling, speed and fun is unbelievable! Never going back!!

I took my Genesis croix de fer round the blue route at Glentress. I found the bike got out of it's depth quickly on the few red sections I accidently ride into.

Agree w/the conclusion. I recently did a 140km gravel race where they decided to add a 1 mile MTB single track section. it was a disaster for most everyone w/people unclipping, walking and coming out of the section very frustrated.

Aye what Tony said at the end is true, I live close to Hamsterley so ride it every so often. On my MTB its great fun but when I took my Gravel bike the fun soon stopped hahaha It could be done but I spent to much time on small niggly bits of trails rather than enjoying the ride. Once I learnt what trails and area could be done on Gravel its great though! But the learning curve is what makes biking fun!

Great Video! I did the same when I got my first 'cross bike back in 2001 (20 YEARS before the gravel craze!) But I set the bike up with a 42 mm 29er tire on the front because the fork had clearance and 35 mm on the rear. As knobby a tire I could find in those days. Absolute blast of a time. I used to love hearing the comments from the guys on proper trailer bikes as I passed them on the climbs... "Road bike!?!" Good times! Keep it up the good work, boys!

Hi, Franis you're doing a great progres on the mountin bike, but i thought 'd still give you a couple tips since nobodys riding style is perfect. You look like you're very stiff on the bike witch is normal especialy for beginers so try to let the bike sort of float under you. The most job is done by not having your hands tight. You want to have your fingers tight around the hadlebars but every other joint should be loose to easely let the bike do whatever it needs to. Imagine yourself as a giant suspencion moving to all sides so you can let the bike roll over stuff with ease and only your head should stay still to look exactly where you want to go but you allready said in your last video witch is great because that's veery important. So if i could giive you one more advice it it's to watch xc races or any mountin biking to see what the pros are doing and then film yourself and compare. And one more thing please have you're pedals horizontaly while cornering it will give you a lot more control and grip. Hope it helps you and thanks for the great content!

The gravel bike fad seems pretty popular now (with prices to match), I think the mixed surfaces would make them worthwhile. Can't help thinking a hardtail would be better in every case off-road though. Would be a slower ride to the trails, most people would drive there with mountain bikes I guess.

Who remembers riding trails like these in the video or harder back in the early 90s on fully rigid MTB (Specialized Rockhopper), canti brakes, 26x1.75 or 1.95 tyres, handlebars cut so much that the levers virtually met in the middle, clipped in to early SPD's bunny hopping over most things and launching yourself down trails that people would only ride full suspension on today.....oh to be young again lol. Then their was some that put road bars on with standard aero levers, xt thumb shifters up top all because mountain biking legend John Tomac did it.
