You did leave out one big advantage of a hydraulic driven auger. They can be reversed. If the flights from the bit get caught under a rock and stuck just reverse the direction of the bit and screw it back out.
@mxadema
@mxadema 4 жыл бұрын
Yes it does. The thing I find interesting is my tractor got down pressure 3point and the option of putting the PTO off the trans, making it turn background if in reverse. I learn on that old Mtz and lots of what it do is not standard on most tractor.
@5thGenNativeTexan
@5thGenNativeTexan 4 жыл бұрын
Exactly. That was the number one reason for use transitioning to a hydraulic auger vs a traditional PTO auger. Our area is very rocky and you're constantly hanging up a PTO auger on a rock and it's hard as heck to get it unstuck. With the hydraulic auger, you just reverse and back it out easily.
@erikniemi1977
@erikniemi1977 4 жыл бұрын
While I can see some people wanting this in ranch applications where you are altering fence lines occationally, for it's cost I'd think the vast majority of tractor owners would still be a lot better off renting a hydraulic auger when the need arrises. I rented a towable hydraulic auger from the Homedepot for a about $150 for a full weekend and drilled about 300 holes to set up 5 acres of horse pastures. If you mark out your holes before you rent it and then just go to town drilling you get a lot of holes dug quick. Seems like this would be a fairly expensive attachment that the majority of people would never need to use regularly...but it's still a cool toy I guess.

@zaappp1588 4 жыл бұрын
I think you missed the part about having the weight and downforce of the loader. A 3 point PHD has only the weight of the auger and no downforce so if it hits rock, it's just going to sit there and spin and not dig not to mention you can reverse the hydraulic auger if you get it stuck. With a 3 point pto driven auger, you're either gonna have to dig the dirt off the top or manually turn the bit backwards...neither of which are very fun.
@erikniemi1977
@erikniemi1977 4 жыл бұрын
@@zaappp1588I agree that having the weight of the loader and the ability to push down while drilling is nice. But I didnt mean to suggest a 3 point augers at all. I suggest renting a hydraulic stand alone auger for those setting up a property. I've used the 3 point augers and unless you are in a rock free area they are annoying to use. Stand alone hydraulic augers are the same as this attachment and smaller footprint than this unit attached to the tractor. The one I rented looked like a mini skid steer with the auger attached to the front. This is a cool piece of kit...just not usually useful once people set up their property and the fences are done.

@@erikniemi1977 I have seen some "towable" augers with an auger head on one end of a frame and a handlebar on the other end like a seesaw with no downforce other than what a person could apply. I assumed that's what you meant. It sounds like you're talking about something like a Toro Dingo or Boxer or Bobcat MD. I've used those before with limited success. They still don't handle rocks well and you are more limited on your hole depth than with a tractor or skid steer. Around here, you can rent a skid steer auger to use on a tractor for around $100/day or $245/week plus tax/ins. etc. Auger bits rent for about $25/day and $70/week. As long as you have a third function or can run it off your rear remotes then that's about the cheapest way to go.
@kdegraa
@kdegraa 3 жыл бұрын
We have decided to buy a front end loader hydraulic auger. The main reason is we cannot rent a mini loader with an auger easily as they can't be rented out locally. Previously we rented a loader with an auger and it costs a bit over $1500 a week. They can be rented for $300 a day. The auger driver and bit will cost us about 3500 fitted. So its expensive. However we will have continued use from it over time, digging holes for trees in our orchard. We balanced up the cost of renting a skid steer for two weeks for $2500. against the cost of buying the driver and auger for $1000 more and we decided to buy.

Thanks for the information video. I personally drilled 100's of post holes in my younger life. Personally if I can drill a proper hole in less than 5 minutes, it still beats more than an hour of hard physical work. A compact tractor is not a 100 hp skid steer.... but a 100 hp tractor could pile drive your posts. Maybe a lower geared gear box could be a solution... just my thoughts

Great video as always Neil. TY for the explanation of the 3rd function. I never understood what the difference was until you explained it the way you did. Surprised the auger didn't spin faster. Looks like it does a good job if you have nothing but dirt, but at that speed might have some issues in a rocky terrain. Thanks again for the video.

Hey Mike- I bought a 23s from you in Burlington about a year ago. I have some holes to dig in the rain storm this weekend to build a handrail for a neighbor who was recently in the hospital. I would love to demo this in the rock of the upper Skagit if you have one at one of your stores. I've been reluctant to pursue a three point auger, but this looks very interesting to me.

I've had mine for about a year with a 9" bit. I've been running it on my BX23S. I'm using a Kubota diverter kit, not a true 3rd function. Judging from the video, I would say the speed is about the same. It definitely goes slow but it still gets the job done. Much safer and more convenient than a 3 point mounted. Plus with a BX you can drill deeper holes. Just be sure to have rear ballast or you will tip forward.

Mine is the SA20 with the low flow motor. The same one that Neil is showing in the video. I found that if you get stuck, just reverse it. Also in harder soil sometimes you have to clean out the flights 2 to 3 times. I've never really found that be a problem though.

Interesting to know. I'm looking at the BX2680 as my first tractor on a 1 acre property, on occasion would need to dig new post holes. The ground here is pretty hard, I've dug hundreds by hand over the years, but getting a tractor gives me the option to get some attachments to make life easier. So, I'd suspect buying a hydraulic auger would be a great way to go over buying the PTO type as the hydraulic is easier to hookup and use....I'm not in a hurry so if it turns slower, and takes longer who cares, its easier and less back breaking than trying to dig by hand. Looking at the BX2680 with fast attach loader, roto-tiller, and box blade for now, but once you get the tractor your world of attachments is wide open within reason of your tractor's capability of course....only having an acre of land limits the size of the tractor that I need of course but I feel the sub-compact would be more than plenty. I just need something with a loader and ability to grade and level my driveway and roto-till and be able to regrade areas out in the field. Its not much but a riding lawnmower can't do any of that LOL.

I made my own from a used hydraulic motor. It spins quite a bit faster. I also want it off the side of the loader because many holes I need are for replacing posts at an existing fence. The centered diggers make it a PITA. I run it off the curl circuit. That's good enough. My auger is a tiny bit undersized for the post size. I push the posts in with my forks when all the holes are drilled. Done .

Good video as always. As with anything, having options is always good. I have a 3 pt phd on my b2650 here in the granite state. Love it. Imo, pros for the loader phd for downward thrust & reverse the direction of the auger~~~ Cons- very slow, can't see how a bigger auger would even operate, limiting the actual phd to smaller holes. I can also easily see rolling a tractor after getting the auger stuck trying to lift it out of the ground instead of reversing for any inexperienced operators.

How do I find out if my third function is the better one? It was installed when I got a Grapple bucket. I have no idea if it will run a hydraulic motor. My tractor is a TA33DA. @javabean215 4 жыл бұрын
If you can operate the third function (open/close grapple, spin the auger bit) while curling the bucket, then it's true 3rd function. If you have to stop curling, then flip a switch or press a button to change the joystick's "curl" over to "open", then it's a diverter....you're diverting the curl function into open grapple function.

Neil, I assume the hydraulic implement pump is the flow rate of concern with one of these. I've seen a couple of folks on KZbin using the Sa20 with a B2650 (one fellow was even using the mid-range motor instead of the low flow motor, and it worked fine in the soil he was playing in). I'm not familiar with the implement flow on the B2650; how does it compare with the L2501? I'm wondering if the 2501 can handle one of these even though its implement pump claims to be a hair over 5 gpm.

Looks like he had to drill a hole on the side of this hill because his loader arms weren’t tall enough to drill on level ground.

Plenty tall, went here because it was convenient. For smaller tractors still, there are shorter augers.

what to do when the auger grabs and starts driving itself into the ground? Is there a reverse of the auger direction
@MessicksEquip
@MessicksEquip 3 жыл бұрын
on a hydraulic one, yes you can reverse it. You can't with a PTO.

How does the solenoid on the third function valve hold up? Does it get to hot? My only concern is premature failure to the solenoid with constant on. Why not run it off a rear remote?
@MessicksEquip
@MessicksEquip 4 жыл бұрын
For periodic use like this, you would not have a problem. Attachments like a trencher or rotary cutter could cause some heat concerns.

Have a friend that does that on a bigger tractor, he took a 3pt auger he already had and converted it to hydraulic drive using a reel drive motor off a grain head then built a mount for it that slides into a 2" receiver hitch tube on his loader bale spear.
@5thGenNativeTexan
@5thGenNativeTexan 4 жыл бұрын
That's exactly how we do it. We didn't have any aux remotes on the loader, so we got a couple of 20 ft hoses with our auger and plug it into a set of remotes in the back.

Before investing in any post hole drill you got to check your ground conditions, most are useless in any type of shale or rocky soil , I tried and ended up disappointed and just selling it. If you can't dig the hole by hand with a digging bar and shovel you won't dig it with one of these.

I remember somewhere they drilled a hole so deep, I mean really deep, I mean deep. Lowered a microphone in to it and they claim the sound they recorded was like people screaming!! On a note on the video I think it would have been cool to see a skid steer do the same hole and see a unit more made for this use drill a hole. Thanks for the video.

I have the same setup on a L4600, it is better than a 3pl auger, but the downside of this setup is if the auger starts drilling to the side you can't counteract it.

Hi Neil, Thanks for sharing this. I've had my eye on the SA20 auger for some time and needed proof that a b2650 could handle it. Could you tell me which SA20 motor option you were using in this video? The Land Pride website appears to offer different motor to match your hydraulic flow.

For us in rocky ground, it's absolutely necessary.. One: for being able to reverse to back out of a rock hang-up, and two: to have the down-force from the loader to penetrate through hard soil and rock (we have the rock bit).
