Another Queenslander here with Sir Walter. I commented some months ago that this is probably what my lawn needs. It’s 17 years old never been scalped or thinned. So it was good to see what you did. I retire in 18months so this will be one of my first big jobs going into the spring/summer of 2024. I look forward to seeing the results in a few weeks. I am happy with my sir Walter , I had a very fine lawn before this and the lawn grubs just destroyed it over 3 years, so replaced with SW and the grubs don’t touch it thank goodness. But it does get thick😊, however it’s always green and wears well for me. I will report back in 2024 😂👍

I did the same to my Buff out the back. I was so thick full of matted dead thatch. It bounced back within a week to low, solid green and lush grass. It does work!

Good video. My Sir Walter was in a similar state. Word of warning, the only scarifier Kennards had was a beast and would not set high enough, would have done too much damage. Just had to hack through with the Masport to eventually get down to a similar scalp. That was 8 weeks ago, now its short and tight. Much better to mow!

Very interesting video. I've had buffalo lawns , in two different houses for over 30 years. I mow high and have never scarified or scalped. Every September I drop my little Victa from Notch 6 to notch 5. Then a fortnight later I drop it to notch 4. I never go below that. I fertilise then go back up to notch 6 . I have never had to do any thinning. I top dress every 3 years and only to really keep it level. Very interesting to see the use of the scarifier.

I live in usa. Few things. For lawns Dethatching is a good thing, as you are removing the dead clippings from the mowing you have done over time that just havent fully broken down. Which in return helps the lawn breath easier, helps drain water into the soil easier, and can help prevent disease in the lawn. On lawns prone to thatch buildup should be dethatched once a year. and Do it During the growing Season so the lawn can recover and repair itself. But for Dethatching You dont want to Mow the thatch up. You want to RAKE it up

OMG I think my lawn needs this. Bought new Matilda Buffalo start of last summer. Have it watered in and is green as. But is so spongey and thick. I have my mower set to its highest height and it is like pushing through shag pile carpet. lols Thank you.

Great video mate. Good to see you out. That lawn will come back a treat. Jack and i did about 60 buffalo lawns this season. Went super heavy just like you did. They all have comeback a treat. Usually takes about 8 weeks to properly recover. You get about 5 years of reward for your effort

Awesome mate, I have Sir Walter in one area for shade tolerance and I cut it down to 25mm in October, it is now on the second last height on the Honda again growing an 25mm a day here in Bundaberg PGR helps but insanely fast growing. Thanks for the tip on Scarfing and de thatching.

I live in Melbourne. I have Sir Walter. Never de-thatched. It was in need of a good de-thatch. I had the front yard de-thached at the start of summer (Oct 21) by a professional gardener. He used a mower to scalp the lawn. It has recovered beautifully. I should have got him to de-thatch the back yard at the same time but I decided to wait to see how the front yard recovered (I have never de-thatched before). At the time of doing the front yard, the gardener told me de-thatching is pretty straight forward and that I could have a go at de-thatching the lawn in future. I don't feel comfortable scalping the lawn with a mover (like the gardener did). He suggested I use Ryobi Scarifier. He suggested using the Ryobi scarifier on my lawn every year. Thoughts?

I think you forget to mention that the HRX217 is a premium domestic mower whereas the HRU is commercial. Massive difference in performance

Yeah this is so true mate and not to forget the HRU is significantly cheaper to buy than the HRX217. I still strongly recommend the HRU hands down followed by the HRN

Thanks for the Video Happy New year Brenton, I just did a dethatch (used an electric Drapper machine not as hardcore as yours) on my kikuya Lawn. I used the same Honda as your to clean it up what a beast of a machine great for cleanup and general mowing. The grass was installed in the 70s and hadn't been dethatched or anything since then, I hope it comes back lol. great video and information thanks for posting once again.

Great vids! Worked for over a decade on cane farms in FNQ, so I'm a little OCD when it comes to grass and my front lawn. Never hired a scarifier (just a lot of sweat with the landscape rake) but you've got me wondering... I feel you when you mention the 1000% humidity!

Great video, I’ll be interested to see what it looks like in a couple of weeks, I think that’s what our SW needs to have done to it, when you showed his lawn at the beginning and you rubbed your hands over it, it looked just like ours at the moment and we have the Best looking lawn in our street also Lol 😂, I wish our garden renovator didn’t recommend SW, it’s been nothing but hard work and not as hardy as he said it would be for our climate up here in Queensland, we’ve just had lawn grubs, we’ve got a mixture of grass on our corner footpath, when we actually had our whole front lawn ripped up and replaced with SW, I’m having to mow every 3rd day just to stay on top of it or it’s too thick for me to mow and it’s also hard to walk on, if we could afford it I’d have the whole lot ripped back up and get Queensland Couch laid, that’s what Ben from Lawn Tips recommended to me and I should of stood my ground with the contractor and my HUBBY Lol 😂 because I’m the one who does the Lawn and mowing. @@theaussielawn it gets mostly sun all day with only one little spot where it’s shady, we’re really disappointed in how it’s performed when our contractor told us it would be great for all year round, it basically grows overnight Lol 😂 and I’m forever mowing it and pulling out the runners all the time, I can’t go any higher with my mower blades, I mowed it today finally after all the rain and had to up the blades to #8 on my mower settings 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ but it looks great for today anywhos Lol 😂

@@WOODZY_ I think my hubby has already done that from watching Brenton’s previous videos, but with the weather the way it is at the moment, it’s growing like crazy, plus he gave it a fertiliser when we had the rain, if we had our time over I’d never have the stuff, I get a lot of runners coming through it and it makes it look ugly and I pull them out or cut them out whichever is easier, I’ve upped my mower blades that I’m only taking the tips off the grass, we’ve got a mixture of grass growing on our footpath which we had all new SW Laid, in one little shady spot the grass is just non existent and just dirt 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️, we were told it was the best for our climate but when we had couch it was way better than this stuff, both of us are sorry we listened to our contractor when he talked us into having the SW, should of gone with our first choice and that’s on us for not listening to ourselves, this always happens to us. It looked beautiful when it was first laid but now after a few years down it’s a nightmare to look after, especially when purchasing products, some you can’t use on SW. We live just outside of Brisbane, so we get some hot days during Summer which again we were told it could handle the heat and our winter weather that doesn’t get as cold as some places in Australia 🇦🇺, but no use complaining about it because we’re too old now to be starting all over again plus the cost 💲 to have someone do it for us, it’s beyond us to do ourselves now we’re getting older, we just want something easy and simple without all the hassles of keeping it looking pristine and that’s something I enjoy doing, it’s my only exercise due to health issues for both of us, plus we keep the paddock next to us nicely mowed, it actually looks better than our yard lawn Lol 😂, I think council should give us a discount on our rates for all the work we put into maintaining it. Na I always prefer the mower to a rake esp the HRU. This way not only does it collect and chop up the scarafyings I can also take a little bit of the exisiting grass with it in the first pass

The big difference in your mower comparison is the HRX217 is a 21in cut self propelled model and the other was a 19in cut push mower, and the self propelled Honda's have a reduced grass shoot which bogs them down so much. I have the HRU216 which is the bottom of the commercial line /top of the domestic line up Australian very of the HRX217 and it does the same thing

God that was hard to watch. Next time mate grab some cubic metre gardening bags and some wide grass rakes. Rake it in to piles and pick it up first. Will cut the labour in half trying to pick up all the waste with a catcher.

Do you guys have access to a corer.depending how deep the soil profile is ,would be good to hollow Tyne it ,get more thatch up and aerate it,.I don’t know if your scarifier can do it but you used to be able to get scarifiers with removable blades ,and different size spacers,that you can go over it again in opposite direction.good job though awesome video.

G'day Troy yeah I can get one if needed. This lawn doesn't really have compaction issues otherwise I would have definitely cored it. You need to be a little careful with buffalo that you don't over do it with scarifying since it only grows via stolons and not rhizomes. Glad to hear you loved the vid mate 😎 Thanks for tuning in .

Pffff.... way back in the early 90's I bought a Honda HR216 and loved it. Wouldn't have clogged like that newer American model there. That said, with that much volume of loose material I would have picked it up manually and then used the mower to finish. Way too many trips to empty.

My HRU handled it fine too. I like the US models for regular mowing but soon as its damp, thick or long they can clog even without collecting scarifyings

@@theaussielawn - I think the USA model you have is not designed the same as the older USA model. Mine never clogged even in extra heavy material. Only when the bag was full, but even then the mower would keep going and start mulching.

Hi there, Firstly, love your videos mate, you’re one of the reason why I’ve become so emotionally invested in my lawn. Keep smashing out the content, thoroughly enjoy it. I live in Western Sydney and just did this to my Kikuyu lawn. After about 2 years of thinking that my lawn was awesome because of how green and how soft and spongy it was, I then realised after research I had a major thatch issue. I just completed 2-3 gradual low mows, with a crazy amount of catcher empties, then aerated and fertilised the lawn. The lawn is looking like a desert at the moment. You reckon I’ve done it too late in the summer? Also, when should I look to start mowing again? Sorry for the 20 questions, just after some guidance and getting worried now.

Hi mate, No defs not too late, what did you fertilise with? Make sure the lawn is getting adequate water either rainfall or Irrigation (aim for 25mm a week over two waterings e.g 12.5mm monday and 12.5mm friday.) Start mowing 2 weeks post your heavy scalp renovation. Its a good opportunity to change heights if you wanted also. (the tip is once you scalp it down to a height your happy with. Bring your mower height up at least one notch above that if not two.)

Its inevitable you will get a couple weeds pop up you are 💯 correct but the recovery is well underway and no real major report of weed infestation to date. There will be an update video in the coming weeks stay tuned 🤟

Yeah it can be disastrous if you get too carried away with a scarifier on buffalo but yeah done correctly it will be fine. I had a bag of 2spec accelerate that I used for the fert

Hi Chris funny you mention that, Pedro had a bushranger before his Honda it wasn't old before he flipped it for the Honda. He didnt rate it. For me personally Ive never used one so cant comment first hand

@@theaussielawnI watched your video because Sir Walter was mentioned. My Bushranger is the latest contractor model 21" cut three speed with the 5HP Honda engine. I looked at a lot of brands and models in the self-propelled range Toro, Masport, Victor and Honda to name a few and found this particular model of Bushranger is well designed with a heavy duty build quality and comes with a long warranty for domestic use. The Honda engine is quite and doesn't have a smoky exhaust like some others. PS thumbs up for your video. Cheers

Really Great Informaton. Might have been over doing it with the Nitrogen. As you know "Buff" is one of the least "N" requirements of most of the grass types. Keep with the liquid iron for green and less Nitrogen. Could have "Couch Sprigged" another lawn with all of the Grass.

Does anybody know what the head on that scarifier looks like? Here in the states people use the words scarifier/dethatcher interchangeably. I’m assuming this is the well spaced out verticutter blades that are less aggressive.

Hi Scott, I had an old bag of 2spec Accelerate that we used. Re rates Add the correct quantity of fert into your spreader and start on a low setting maybe 1/4 open see how many times it takes you to cover the lawn till its empty then next time you fert open it up a littler more until you start to get close to a setting that gets you comfortably over your lawn once or twice. Then you have the correct setting, Some professional ferts and spreaders will have setting on the bag. My JD spreader is a spyker spreader rebranded so I just look for spyker settings on the fert bag.

The huge amounts of rain we have had in Sydney seem to really be encouraging it, especially when I put the mower over with the mulch plug in. I’m guessing it’s been chopping up the odd stolen and spreading it around.

It can do mate but I’d start with a scalp in late spring (buffalo needs to be actively growing when doing these sorts of procedures)

Hey mate, fellow lawnie here. New place has SWB (previous TifTuf) and I always have to modify my care due to my fifo roster. As you can imagine, my SWB is very similar condition. I've scalped last spring (my first with SWB) I'm doing a reno when I fly home and I would like to know why you didn't take the opportunity to aerate? And top dress? Top dressing can slow up the recovery of buffalo. I only recommend it when there is surface level issues. Re aeration most hire machine are more trouble than they are worth, You slog ya guts out behind it only to get down an inch its just not always worth the stress especially for buffalo and taller cut lawns

A question...how do you get close to the edge of the lawn using a scarifier? Ideally you would go over the edge to make sure you get all of the lawn but won't this wreck the scarifier blades?

Hi Daniel, You only need to go up to the edge not over it. The judging of distance between path and blade all comes from years of experience. As you say you dont want to hit the concrete and risk damage to either concrete or blade

Hey Ratty, Based on a summer climate ideally we aim for 25-30mm of Irrigation each week over 2 applications. So for me at home I water Monday and Friday morning. Good luck with your buffalo mate its an ideal time to give it a renovation. Cheers for tuning in

Any reason you didn't rake the bulk of the clippings up before mowing? I know that the mowers picked it up, but it also looked like a lot of extra work/time compared to just raking and removing. Great video, very interesting to see how all of this lawncare stuff works.

Either way really mate, What I potentially missed explaining in the vid was when we used the mowers to collect the scarifyings we where also cutting into the exisiting buffalo lawn too. Kinda two birds one stone. The other benefit to using the mower is it cuts up all the clippings much smaller so smaller waste pile too. But there is no reason you couldn't rake the stuff up first then mow.

@@theaussielawn the other option would be for future use you could keep the clippings as stolons or rhizomes dependant on lawn but you would know that and use a rotary cultivator and shallow cultivate them into a lawn of the same variety that is in need of a reno. obviously theres the chance to lose some of the stolons/rhizomes to weather but no harm in repurposing it instead of putting it in green waste.

I’m from the states and in my area st. Augustine is all anyone has, but I’ve never heard of anyone doing this. What is the reasoning for scarifying? We are usually trying to get the lawn thick like what Pedro had before to crowd out weeds

Hey mate welcome, So this lawn had reached a point where the mower would bog down leave scalp circles and sometimes even get stuck and the mower wheels would just spin on the spot. There is thick healthy lawns then there was this one that really needed to be cut back hard. This will recover with lots of fresh leaf blade and less stolons matting together to a point it wasn't even pleasant to walk on. I actually feel the buffalo might grow a little different here than over there in some part due to the much more intense UV levels from the sun.

I think I’m seeing that difference right now that you talk about between my new lawn in the back yard and the front. My new lawn out the back (month and a half old) is thick dark green after the week of rain we just had, but the front lawn that is 2 years old has seen some tough times, it is layers on layers of hard woody stolens (most are half dead) with a matted layer on top that water just runs off of. So I think it’s time I try out my own dethatching, now that I’ve been reminded what a healthy lawn looks like with my new turf!

Great vid. I laid Sir Walter 10 years ago in our back yard, about 100m2. It has slowly been taken over by kooch, can I spray it with anything to kill the kooch?

Hi Rod unfortunately not. In a nut shell since buffalo is really only bred for use in domestic situations there is not alot of money spent developing selective herbicides for it. Where as couch is widely used in sporting applications there is more money there to develop chemicals to control unwanted grasses from it..

Awesome vids mate (watched part 2 aswell) the result is excellent. Is there a point in time where the buffallo has too much thatch to safely attempt this? Lawn up the road has about 10cm of brown tight thatch between the green leaves and the soil and its a not easy to mow. Worried il kill it if i attempt to dethatch it .
