He shot the arrow off his son because the evil duke made him do it otherwise he would’ve killed his son. This all started because he wouldn’t greet the hat that the duke put on a stick and made all the people greet it. After the successful shot he was asked why he took a second arrow and he said that it wouldn’ve been for the duke had he hit his son. He was arrested for that statement but managed to escape on his prison transport on a lake. He also later killed the duke in an ambush with his crossbow. He then also fought in a revolution and helped found my beautiful home country Switzerland. But many people don’t believe he was actually alive. I don’t care Willhelm Tell was badass.

It's a swiss fictional tale written by Friedrich Schiller (a German). The part with the apple goes something like this. Wilhelm Tell and his son Walther are on a market. Then Gessler (the bad new "king" of the reagion) is there and put his fucking hat on a goddam pole stands next to it and says "everyone how does now bow before my hat shall die". Walter (child) doesn't bow so the guards arrest him. Wilhelm Tell begs Gessler for mercy. Gessler says something like "You know what. If you really are so amazing with your CROSSBOW (not bow) shoot an apple of your sons head. Then you shall live for some reason." Wilhelm Tell takes the shot and splits the apple right in half. He was terrified and every else there too. I'm from Switzerland so I know this. It's a completely imaginary story. And I'm certainly not an expert.

I have to assume this challenge would have been easier with a crossbow which has a stable body, horizontal bow and a more consistent force behind each shot; so the skill is in judging the distance and the aiming only. Still a tremendously skilled shot to make, but using a longbow with safety arrows has to have made this a lot harder!

The legend of William Tell (as I was told it) was that he passed an obelisk with the lord's hat on it without bowing to it (which was illegal in the realm he was in) and his punishment was to shoot an apple of his kid's head (which was thought to be an impossible task, ergo forcing him to kill his own son)
