I thought I had spikes, but I must have lost them. For commuting you are probably better off not using them. As you only hit icy puddles and you can coast over them. And real ice there is no way you can get by without them. I needed them badly.

@PaulKentSkates Жыл бұрын
@@eBoard3R thank you. Yes I was a little worried at the first lake because it was a bit warmer the days before I got there. That's why I was carrying that ice axe. Incase I fell through and could pull myself up. At the second place they had people checking the ice for us. It did have rain and melted the following day though, so it would have been dangerous that day. But it was stable when I was there.

And here I was just trying to get a setup for traction in Seattle rain...XD Great vid, it's cool to see more of the ice trick shots that were on Instagram earlier this year. Maybe Black Friday I'll get myself a second-set so I can actually skate during the snow season
@PaulKentSkates Жыл бұрын
It's weird. Definitely takes some getting used to as the studs work more when you are sideways than they do when rolling. and the studs make it roll slowly so you don't get to coast as much. But black ice is instantly impossible to skate on and when you consider that, it's actually quite amazing how well it works in comparison. I think if you lathes a channel in the wheel like a rain wheel you could put the studs in and adjust them, and you could also remove them and use the dad bods as rain wheels during the nicer half of the year.

Hey Paul! Fantastic video, the drone shots were amazing. Those wheels remind me of my old abec11 107mm flywheels... i think i actually still have them somewhere in my garage. When i first got them i thought no cracks or rocks could stop me, until a large enough rock sent me flying at maybe 20/25mph... that was the last time i used those wheels lol (your videos also encouraged me to get back into skating, appreciate you bud)

Amazing video, love the story telling and music! Love when people try out their crazy ideas. By the way, have you ever tried "ice board blades" for your board? That's just awesome. I recently got my Supersonic in and I've been trying to find a setup that works. I'm struggling to find a setup that uses my Dad Bods. How did you set this board up without getting wheel bite on those huge wheels?

I'll need to double check but I believe I had a 5/8th inch riser in the front and just under half inch in the rear.

U need 3 rows of studs on each wheel..1 in the middle..and 2 on the sides..edges..i bet it would help..

@eddiewaz24742 ай бұрын
Would you get more traction if they were on the inside of the wheel?
@PaulKentSkates2 ай бұрын
Potentially for a few reasons. One is that the core is closer to the inside edge. But my thinking was I wanted it to roll as well as possible on pavement also, so I figured more flex would help with that. I did accidentally stud the inside lip of one of the wheels though. 🤦 I placed the wheel in the rear so it would return to center easier. The studs penetrate more the more it slides. So when you begin to slide the resistance increases. It's tricky to get used to.

What are the pros and cons of pairing two different duro wheels?
@PaulKentSkates Жыл бұрын
I am riding the same duro in this one. Why do I often run split duros? It gives you more traction in the rear but maintains some of the rolling resistance of the harder wheels. Let's you drive off the rear or an exit of a corner harder, which can mean more speed (especially when pumping). I assumed it might be faster in corners when downhilling, and then motorcycle engineer told me out of the blue said I should consider it, and that It would be faster. He explained why, but I didn't understand it fully. (but it depends on how your trucks are set up I think). Lastly, a little more dampening in the rear, and higher roll resistance in the front wheels (where I try to keep my weight most of the time). When sliding it returns to forward easier which is nice when you wear a backpack a lot.
@juniorpedron3304 Жыл бұрын
@@PaulKentSkates thank you for answering my question! Appreciate that a lot 🤙🏽 so you’re running softer duro in the back right?
@pavelmachacek7387 Жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, I don't understand why you're releasing a winter video almost in the summer. I love you, but who wants to longboard on ice, why? Peru, Maroccoo, LDP, but why this? Sorry, simple things work.
@PaulKentSkates Жыл бұрын
@pavelmachacek7387 Yeah I would have liked to get it out earlier. I was filming it up to about 4 weeks ago during March break (it was still winter here, and I had 4 feet deep snow where I was skating). It was either release it once I finished editing or wait until next winter. I figured I would go now, and then release more footage on KZbin shorts tiktok and instagram next winter to hopefully get people watching it. Why skate on ice? No really good answer, at least not at first. It seemed silly, and because I can, apparently. I suppose I wanted to test the concept. To test if the studs actually help on ice puddles when using it for mild winter commutes, using studded wheels help Adam Ornelles won the ultra skate this year. But aside from proof of concept I didn't have very high expectations aside from a laugh. After a few rides I figured out it does have a practical application. I will use it to keep loading on my tendons so I don't shock myself too much in the spring. If I keep pushing l in the winter once per week. I will prevent injuries if I try to do the Miami Ultra, since it happens during proper winter for where I live. This I'll likely just do on pathways, but when the paths are covered in snow I can go to a groomed ice track. And the ice really tests my balance. If need to be super precise so it can actually help me get prepped for early season riding.

@@PaulKentSkates It's seasonally appropriate down in Emutopia and Kiwiland, although even in winter there's a general lack of ice to skate on. Fascinating anyway, chur!
