I love puzzles like these. You're given vague information and multiple clues, then you have to sort people into categories based on the clues. I love it! My math teacher had four puzzles like this for me to solve just before Christmas break and I spent almost the entire hour and a half of class working on them. One of the best math classes I've ever had this year!

If you love puzzles like these, PennyPress and Dell create puzzle books that are devoted to LOGIC. I spend every single day solving them, which is probably why I solved the puzzle in under 3 minutes. Anyway, if you decide to buy one of their puzzle books, make sure you either get the "Math and Logic Puzzles book", or their just plain "Logic Puzzles." They offer lots of other kinds of puzzles, but those are the best ones. I'm addicted. EDIT: Many of their puzzles are MUCH harder than this one, but then again, there are logic puzzles that are super easy in the beginning of the books.

***** No need to assume I feel like I'm better than everyone because I make a comment. That's your own projection. Math solves real problems. This is a fake problem. You can do the math and figure that out right? What is the purpose of making and solving fake problems when there are real ones out there to use your brain on; there is none other than practice, understanding. Once you understand you are supposed to move on. Riddles like these aren't nearly as fun as real ones. Math, after all, was created to solve real problems, not practice on fake ones. My point is this TedEd celebrates the practice, and suggests Einstein had a hand in making it to draw attention to it. Even they admit he did not later. Which is baseless sensationalism.
@OmoiSenpai9 жыл бұрын
Nick Steele Technically everything is mathematical, so does that mean that things that waste our time, such as fake problems, and my comment actually does not waste our time? :o Fake riddles, helps you perceptualize real problems, and situations. This riddle was a matter or Organization, Observation, and Elimination. It helps improve our senses to be able to detect and understand things with better thought, as well as quickens our eliminations and make faster decisions. This way, when we come across any type of situation, we can narrow down selections to make a better judgement. Also, "Einstien's Riddle" is the common known name for the riddle he spoke about. That is why they talked about that subject at the end. As a matter of fact, they even give you the reason as to why Einstein did not make this with the use of Observation and Elimination. It was something so simple to search up, yet you had reason to believe that TED-Ed "suggests Einstein had a hand in making it to draw attention to it." Sometimes, the easiest of answers are right under the nose. That's why I love riddles. ^_^

What I ended up doing is drawing up a chart of houses numbered 1-5, and drew lines to separate each house, as well as each category: Nationality, Color of the house, pet, drink, and Cigar. Then on the side I wrote down each article in each category, like Norwegian, Milk, Pall Mall, etc. Then I went through the clues until I could find something I could place on the list, starting with 9: The Norwegian lives in the first house. I then wrote down Norwegian under the column for the first house, in the row dedicated to Nationality, and I crossed Norwegian off my list on the side. I then systematically went through each clue, filling in what I could, as well as putting in possibilities, until I ruled out all but one option. I did this until I filled in everything but the Fish, which I placed in the final empty slot, and deduced that the German in the 4th house with Green walls who smoked Prince and drank Coffee stole the Fish.

@Itsdark8 жыл бұрын
@3:00, I don't think that's the best way to approach the riddle. Why would you all of a sudden start asking what the Norwegian drinks, when there's so many other empty slots? A better way is to just look at Clues.*3.*, *7.*, *12.*, and *13.*, and realize the *Swede* must be the one drinking *Root Beer*, and smoking *Blue Master*. Leaving the guy drinking *Coffee* in the House 4 (*Green House*) to be *German*. Whoever came up with this riddle intended for it to be solved logically. Not just, all of a sudden, to randomly pick one of the empty slots and try to fill it in. You need to follow the flow of the clues.
@PrincessAllie7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that part wasn't articulated very well. It's not so much a case of knowing to solve that one next and THEN deciding to look at the clues, but it's a case of taking the clues that have been given and realizing that water is the only option. That was the point I got stuck at and I was definitely like "well, how was I supposed to know to try to solve for that one first?" but then he made the point about the Dane with the Tea and the Blue Master with the Root Beer, so clearly water is the only option. I wasn't thinking about eliminating the options when I did it, so that was why I got stuck there, but after he said that, it made sense that that's the only next logical step, but I agree with you that the way he presented it, it's confusing and seems like he's making an arbitrary guess.
@samcramer55547 жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree that it does seem odd, but knowing the green house, coffee, and German is the 4th house, still wouldn't give you the answer, as well as it would be impossible to do it in that order, due to the other possibilities that would make you answer have 2 or more different options.

Was going to complain that they didn't specify that they meant Green is to the left of White *facing the houses* and not from the houses' perspective, but it doesn't matter as the solution works either way. It's a credit to the clues and set-up that they're "interpretation-proof."
@Lone-Lee3 жыл бұрын
I tried this and found the same problem with it. I could find every details except the house number of the German and the Swede.
@Lone-Lee3 жыл бұрын
But, how could it work either way? You'll have to storm into both of the houses simultaneously to find it.
@Lone-Lee3 жыл бұрын
As per the video, you're the detective whom the police have called to investigate on the crime and it's you yourself who finds the close after sleuthing. So, obviously you'd know the direction too. So it's not a problem in the actual scenario.
@bloodstarkidlander91593 жыл бұрын
@@Lone-Lee Two scenarios: "Yellow, Red, Blue, Green, White" & "Yellow, Red, Blue, White, Green" from left to right facing the houses. You come up with the same result either way. In fact, even if you flip both those around, you get the same result. So four set-ups yield the same solution of "the German in the Green house." As for the German's and Swede's locations, one can deduct the Prince-smoking German's once you are left with the Green house being the only one missing a cigar type and nationality. Then the only nationality left is the Swede, which must be in the White house. It doesn't matter if you switch the Green and White houses' positions; you end up with the same result either way when you deduce it based on the clues given. "you're the detective whom the police have called to investigate on the crime and it's you yourself who finds the close after sleuthing. So, obviously you'd know the direction too." Huh? I'm talking about the confusion of "my left or the house's left." It doesn't matter what the eponymous detective "knows" based on the scenario; the only information is what's provided in the riddle. I suggest you just watch the solution again, they spell it out clearly and logically in the video.

first i wanna say, sorry for my bad english, i'm vietnamese and i'm still learning english day by day. hope that you all can understand me, since i try all my best to explain my way to solve the riddle. this riddle is actually really easy compared to the other riddles that ted-ed has ever shown. you just need to use the hints which give 100% true information, then try to solve some more hints which are related to the 100% true hints, and finally end up using the rest of the hints. all you need to do is to draw 5 columns, number them from 1 to 5, and you can start. for example, you can see the hint which tells that "the norwegian lives in the first house", then write "norwegian" in the first column. you can also see the hint "the owner of the middle house drinks milk" (or something like that i don't really remember sr) and write "milk" in the third column. good luck, and be happy if you can find the answer yourself without any helps. this riddle might not be as difficult as many more riddles, but just be proud a little bit tho, and think about a fact that maybe there are still people who can't solve it as you. by the way, i solved it in 15 mins, too slow, wasn't it lmao? have a good day, y'all.
@tabletgenesis34397 ай бұрын
Since it only said we can't search all 5 houses at once, we can search 4 houses at once. There's a 80% chance we go in the thief's house, and if we dom't, a cop sees if the fish is still in the thief's house and the rest chase after the thief. If the fish is there, the cop in the house communicates through walkie talkie. If not, they catch up.
