Solution to Bonus Riddle: brilliant.org/TedEdRuby/
Townspeople are demanding that a corrupt merchant’s collection of 30 rubies be confiscated to reimburse the victims of his schemes. The king announces that the fine will be determined through a game of wits between the merchant and the king’s most clever advisor - you. Can you outfox the merchant and win back the greatest amount of rubies to help his victims? Dennis Shasha shows how.
Lesson by Dennis Shasha, directed by Artrake Studio.

For the bonus riddle: 10 The merchant will always take the 2 most valuable piles, only leaving you with the lowest value one. That means you can only get it if you split it into 3 equal piles, 10,10,10. If I take any out of any pile and put it in another the merchant will take that more valuable pile leaving me with one less than 10.

Yes. The thing is that they say that the scoundrel CHOOSES and KEEP, so i guess he can see the piles... Btw, the first problem says that you want to guarantee the maximum number of rubies, but maybe other combinations could have a better risk/reward overall, i'm lazy about listing everything i should just do a computer program lol
@locksmack
@locksmack 4 жыл бұрын
You are correct. However, if we assume that the scoundrel can't see the amount in each pile, then the answer is 28. This is because of the wording of the question - what is the MAXIMUM amount you can keep? If the two piles he choose each have just one ruby, then you can keep the pile with 28. Assuming 1 ruby can be called a 'pile'...
@Wishkeyn

Technically you could arrange the piles so that a closer packed pile of more rubies would look less than the 2 other piles which are not as densely packed.

@@chriswebster24 It's actually relevant. Had the word "exactly 6" not been there, the merchant could put 2, 2 and 26 into those 3 boxes (26-2 = more than 6). So if we write 8 on each paper, we will only get 8 in total. But since the difference must be exactly 6, the merchant now has very limited options. Whether it's (2,8,20), (3,9,18), (4,10,16), (5,11,14), (6,12,12), (7,13,10), (2,11,17), (6,9,15) or (8,8,14), if we write 8 on each paper we will get at least 16 rubies instead of only 8. Best case scenario, we would get 24 because if the merchant sorted the rubies as 8,8,14, it will guarantee us 8 rubies from each boxes
@mongoliacomix
@mongoliacomix Жыл бұрын
The wording " exactly 6" changes the problem completely. As suggested, and that was my line of thinking, 2,2, 26 would be the merchant safest bet
@nickryan4619
@nickryan4619 Жыл бұрын
It doesn't even need to say exactly 6. The rules say that one box has to have 6 more than one other box. That means only one box has to have 6 more than only one other box. Therefore the other two can be the same. 2, 2, and 26 is the answer I came up with.

The way I solved it was thinking of 3 scenarios(using the same number on all 3 cards seems pretty straight forward): 1. A box with minimum amount of rubies, so 2. The other two boxes bound by the +6 relation so 11 & 17. (2,11,17) 2. A box with minimum amount of rubies, so 2. One other boxes bound to this one by the +6 relation so 8, and then 3rd box with what's left 14. (2,8,20). 3. Starting with 11 in each box, satisfying the +6 relation while keeping rubies as evenly spread as possible: (8,8,14). While looking at these numbers in the last two cases, picking anything above 8 will yield just 1 box of stolen rubies with this number. In order for this to be better than 2x8 the number must be 17. But in the 3rd case this would give no rubies at all. Therefore picking 8 is the only logical solution.

For a second I thought the solution was wrong because in the merchant’s shoes, I’d have done 2-8-20, except that combo still gives you 16 gems by the proposed 8-8-8 method. And if you got lucky enough to hit the 8-8-14 scenario, that’s 24 gems for you. So good riddle, but perhaps the logic behind the solution could be explained better by showing more distribution patterns going through 8-8-8?

They are only 10 possible scenarios and knowing them you easily solve the riddle: If the 3 numbers are a b and c then A+6=B C=30-A-B A>1 B>1 C>1 Resulting scenarios are: 2 8 20 3 8 18 4 10 16 5 11 14 6 12 12 7 13 10 8 14 8 9 15 6 10 16 4 11 17 2 Choosing 8 8 8 (all of them have at least 2 numbers greater than 7) guarantees 16 rubies at least Best case would be 8 14 8, getting 24 rubies, any other case you get 16

From an expected value perspective, the answer would actually be 9. Even though there are two instances you would only get 9 rubies ( 8-8-14 or 20-2-8) this is actually outweighed by the fact that the other 8 times you are getting 18. This can be shown as 8*18 + 2*9 = 162 > 160 = 16*10. Note this answer is only true under the assumption that the merchant distributes his rubies at random. The riddle stated after the fact that the merchant would choose the worst case scenario.
@christianratuschny6533
@christianratuschny6533 11 күн бұрын
Almost, you need to account for the fact that, using 8, there's one scenario(8-8-14) where you score 24. Therefore the expected value would be 16*9 + 24 = 168, thus making 8 optimal also from an expected value standpoint

Best case scenario is 2-2-26 and he keeps 4. this is assuming he is using the definition of pile that everyone uses. edit: wouldn't making a pile of 1 break the rules as 1 isn't equal to a pile, it must be 2+ and so 2-2-26 and you get to keep 26 is the best case scenario.

The last riddle is easy. He will choose the two largest piles, so you're left with the smallest one. The maximum size for the smallest one is 10. You divide the rubies into 3 piles of 10, you give the king 10, the criminal keeps 20.
@rylandrc
@rylandrc Жыл бұрын
There's nothing that says the scoundrel will choose the two largest piles, that is a (reasonable) assumption. But the question is what is the maximum number you "can" keep, which includes the possibility, however unlikely, that the scoundrel decides to take the two smallest piles. So technically, assuming that each pile has to have at least one ruby, the maximum number you "can" keep is 28.

@zat1245
@zat1245 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting approach. This is why logic is fun, as long as you know the rules things can be approached in different ways but always seem to be closely related, just at a different angle. My solution was that the formula for the boxes were: a x x + 6 since there are always 30 gems among them: a + x + (x + 6) = 30 so a + 2x = 24 and I concluded that a has a range of even integers from [2, 20]. a can only be integers because there has to be an integer number of gems in the box that equals a. 2 is the smallest amount a can be because of the rules and 20 is the biggest because the smaller a is, the bigger x has to be so the inverse is true and the smallest x can be is 2 by the rules so in that smallest case, a = 20. a has to be even because the monomial 2x is even and so is 24. If one integer is even in a sum of two integers, the other has to be as well to produce an even number. So, I looked at the 10 cases made by the constraints and found that the two largest boxes are never lower than 8 in each case.

Well, I knew from the beginning they were all going to be the same cards. I thought of three 10's, but realized it would be too easy to get stuck with just ten. I thought maybe of trying to find the highest number so I could get one successful batch at both 15 then 12. Then, I thought obviously if you put in for 6 or 8, you'd be sure to get two of them, so I settled with 8. I didn't have a proof, but I at least feel smart, lol. The one box being x + 6 was pretty confusing, but made 8 fairly obvious.

I used another method and i also concluded that the safest way to secure the highest ruby was to write 8 in all cards since it will assure to get in two boxes.

I thought so too... but I do not know why the 6, 12, 12 does not work..? I thought that was also possible and I would aim for 12 on all 3 cards...
@KimThor
@KimThor 3 жыл бұрын
@@theumbrellaofdoom 6, 12, 12 works, and if you would have put 12 on all boxes, you would be rich, but what if he put them in a order of 2, 8, 20? then you would just get 12. or 5, 11, 14, you would again only get 12 rubies. in all of those cases you would get 16 rubies if you said 8 on all boxes which is better than getting 12 rubies unless he divides them like you said.

The video doesn't stipulate that the box that has +6 cannot have more that 6 added to it. So with the 8-8-8 solution, you could end up only getting 8 if the solutions is 2-2-26.

This one actually becomes pretty easy once you turn it into a math problem. As seen starting at 1:43, the normal amount of rubies in two of the boxes is x, and the number in one of the boxes is x +6. So, the problem can be written like this: 3x + 6= 30 3x=24 x=8 So, your best guess for each box is 8, just as the video concluded.

Woot! I got this one, but I didn't understand the explanation at all. I just made a list of all the possible scenarios and plugged in different numbers until I realized 8 was the best any extreme scenario.

There's a flaw in this riddle, the king never said that the merchant had to put all of the rubies in the collection of chests, he can at minimum put 12 up for grabs (2-8-2) and thus the answer isn't perfect (it is assuming he did put all 30 in the boxes)

I just wrote out all iterations... There are 9 unique ways to divide the rubies (x, x+6, 24-2x) where x is between 2 and 11, inclusive. values 4 and 10 give you the same 3 numbers. 4, 10, 16. Then I wrote out the values I could get with each guess from 2 to 20... The most you could get with 1 number is 24 by picking 8 in the (8, 14, 8) division. Or by picking 12 in the (6, 12, 12) division.
