I have a question sir. (3x)^2 is the same as (3x)X (3x) right? So aren't we supposed to use the law that says "when you're multiplying powers of the same base you add the exponets" that our answer is 3x^2 ???

You do know though that everytime you square an unknown you lose a solution? This also the same reason why we don't "cancel out " unknowns. the solution we lose from squatng the unknown is -1/9 . if we let y = x^0.5 instead, we solve this as a quadratic equation without losing the solution. Forgive me I'm a purist I mean no harm.
