If I'm ever chatting to someone with a nice watch I often ask to see it (offering mine in return) because we both like good watches and I love examining them to see the details and craftsmanship. Knowing how to spot a fake is a good skill and one you only utilise when you have it a few inches from your eyes but why is that surprising? We can make microchips, of course we can make something that looks 'mostly the same' from 6 feet away.

Sometimes you can spot fakes by the performance of the movement. I've once bought a high end fake Longines Master Collections and it didn't loose a single second over days. Made me suspicious because of my experience with other Longines and then the watchmaker confirmed. Made in China :-D

Cartier is one brands that are having huge losses from unsold stock, and now the ever better fakes. I think the fake market will always be there when manufactures rather destroy their unsold stock then selling it at a discount. I think the people buying a fake should think about buying a decent mechanical watch for the same price, better for them long run and for the watch industry.

The fake market will be there as long as people are not willing to pay retail prices. I'm not saying fakes are a good thing, but when a 99% copy of a watch can be made and sold for 5% of the original it says something about the true production costs and inflated profit margins.

Heimdallr Keep in mind that you also pay the art creators. Those fakes are only trying to copy the art. But you are right about the inflation. Fake watches are for fake people. Although there are people that buy for example an original rolex to fake themselfs aswell as its a weathy show off item. This is probably the best replica of any watch I've ever seen. The print on the dial does give it away quite a bit, but these little flaws become more unnoticeable with every new batch. To all the commenters who wanna know where they can buy one: you can't. Unless you have some SERIOUS connections and are willing to pay $700-$1000 for what is essentially a 5k watch. This is not your typical 'fun to buy' or 'mess with my friends' fake. This is state-of-the-art counterfeiting. Should you ever become so (un)lucky to own one of these, you've most likely bought it unknowingly for around retail price. Maybe from a legit but corrupt store in a high-end luxury mall in Hong Kong, Shanghai, or Bangkok. Maybe from a careless second-hand dealer. Maybe even from a private person who figured it out and wants to recuperate their losses... In a cynical way, it's kind of a win-win situation. At least until the first service. You enjoy your awesome watch and the Chinese Mafia is happy about the 90 - 95% profit margin. (Needless to say, for Cartier it's lose all the way.)

About Rolex replicas: I think there are two factors that go into this, which are (in no particular order): Rolex are clearly the most desired fakes to this date. The brand's image has suffered a lot, because unless you're at least in the sort of mid to upper middle class, the first perception by your environment is gonna be "come on, that's a fake, right?", even if it's actually legit. Long story short: Huge demand => Incentive for fakers to improve their products. The second point is, they are arguably easier to fake. The most popular (fake) models, i.e. your Datejusts, Submariners, and to a slightly lesser extent Explorer I's and Milgausses are all quite basic in a sense. You need some good CDC and polishing machines, which are ubiquitous by now. For the high quality fakes, you'll get affordable sapphire crystals, proper ETA clones (legally manufactured, since a lot of patents expired), possibly from Japan or even Switzerland.... So in that sense, I agree that there are Rolex fakes that look even more flawless. On the other hand, I've never ever seen a proper functioning fake Sky Dweller or Yachtmaster... BUT: If you take into account the intricacies of this Cartier, i.e., the unusual case design, the dial with its guilloche (as you rightly say) but also its other elements which require different finishing techniques, etc... This is a remarkable, highest quality fake. And in comparison, I would argue that a 97% perfect copy like this is superior to a 99% perfect Rolex copy. As for ordering this stuff off the internet. Well, there's lots of things you can allegedly buy, including counterfeit money and hit jobs. I've never tried those, but I assume that in 99.99% of cases you end up with nothing (or in prison, because the offer has been planted by a state agency). For watches, yes, these sites exists, and some of them actually do deliver. However, you likely won't get the product as advertised, and/or it will be intercepted at customs depending where you live. That's where the real trouble starts. I know a lawyer here in Switzerland from a firm that almost exclusively drags people to court for their counterfeit orders being intercepted at the border. And it won't come as a surprise that Rolex is one of their biggest clients ;-) In short, you might give the few hundred dollar fakes a try and get lucky all the way. But the top fakes, which do set you back around 1k, there's not much to find. Likely because people who are willing to gamble away $1000 can probably afford the real thing in the first place.

I unwittingly bought a fake Tissot automatic that looked great in photographs. But as soon as I looked at it in person and held it in my hands, it was obvious that it was a high quality fake. All those details you'd consider as refinements were just a little coarse. From the dial to the slight gritty rattling in the bracelet and less-than crisp engraving, it was far enough off the mark to be easily seen with the naked eye. But you had to look closely. From an arm's length and in pictures it looked authentic. And the gentleman who sold it to me was so convinced it was real that he argued a bit but ended up taking it back and refunding me 100%.

This Cartier is harder to fake, but the superfakes of Rolexes are getting harder and harder to distinguish. And to me, if a replica gets to 98% of the real thing, but at 5% of the price, the replica is the better deal. It's why I like the Omega Speedmaster--replicas never get the subdials right because they can't copy the movement, so only the real thing passes muster. I love my speedy, but I'd rather have the pride of knowing I saved $8000 than the shallow "pride and catchet" of owning some brand.

I bought an Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch a little over fifteen years ago, brand new at Mappin & Webb on the high street for £1204. The same store today sells it for around £4200. Mine is down as an item of value on my house insurance so I could replace it if I lost it but I could not really afford to just go out and justify buying a new one today at the price they ask. I earn a little more than I did back then but nowhere near roughly three and a half times what I did. It cost me half a month's wages then and it now costs 1.5 x my month's wage today. The Speedmaster used to be amazing value for money, now they are on a cash grab it seems and have attempted to create perceived extra value of the watch simply by putting the price up a ridiculous amount.

I think it’s good but nothing amazing. Any super watch nerd would be able to spot the difference. They are very subtle but very noticeable to a trained eye. The engraving, overall build finish and dial finish and even the size is off. Very easy to spot for a person who likes to spend an obscene amount of time staring at his watches ( me lol). I actually just bought the new Santos in large steel. I am in love and am very impressed with Quick Release and Smart link system. The 1847 MC is louder than I expected. I can here is spin once in awhile. Not as loud as my grey side of the moon but noticed to a trained ear. The downside of ceramic bearings. O well, but boy if you give it a good flick it spins forever. Very impressed and in love with the new design. This is a lifetime piece. Great job Cartier.

Also solid tip!! If the watch is very good and you can’t tell listen to the movement as the rotor spins. ETA based movements have a “click” as they rotate. Most all fakes will have an ETA movement. The 1847 MC while “somewhat” noisy (the sound is relative. All automatics have rotor noise. Rolex is really good at silencing that. But boy you should hear the Patek Nautilus!! That sound is like no other) spins effortlessly with no click.

The dial printing is enough to spot on the fake. Take a high resolution photo of the dial and then zoom it 50% bigger and you will find the differences either in the dial printing or in the hands or even in the date wheel somewhere it will tell you I am fake.

The main goal of a fake factory is: 1. make the watch LOOK (!!) similar as much as possible to the original, 2. make the highest profit out of it. The fakes you are seeing here are not fakes you are buying on your Egipt vacation for 30-50$. These costs almost as much as your ”All inclusive” holiday in Hurgada for one week ☺ While you think the watch only needs to look like the original, you would be very surpised when your Daniel Wellington quartz would last much longer than this Cartier. I believe only rich people can buy high grade fakes for 500$+, because they can afford to smile at it and throw it away once it stops working. I bet, 99% of the people writing comments ”I don’t care, for me this fake is great” would start crying when they would realize they throw in trash 500$ in less than one year..

I think the fake watches do represent a certain market: great watch/dial design with a cheap affordable movement. For those who cares more about how the watches look but don’t have a need for high end movements, in the current legit watch industry you just can’t find an affordable watch with premium design. For a lot of ppl a movement like what’s in the Seiko 5 is good enough. But they really want a unique premium design that only those watches with astronomical price tags currently offers.

There are two types of premium watch buyers. Those who just want a price tag on their wrist to impress friends and work colleagues etc and those who love the craftsmanship and history behind a quality watch. You’ll never get that same feeling from fake. Then most people couldn’t care less about a watch and just want something to tell the time.

Fake watch doesn't spend a dime in R&D/Marketing. But it's hard to spot that fake. I don't think the price Cartier asks is justifiable when you take that into account. Better to buy from brands that are more difficult to copy. Who buys a original LV bag this days?

@@arnaudmeert1527 I wear a Rolex Daytona that was given to me from my race team when we placed at the Daytona 24hr race in 2015. I also wear a Seiko skx007 which my parents bought for me as a birthday present as that's all they could afford many years ago. The seiko, to me has more value, sentimentally than the Rolex. Also, not once has anyone in almost 3years ever complimented me or asked me about my Rolex. To most people walking past, it's just a watch. At quick glance no one would tell if it was real or fake.

Depending on the brand that will never happen. Originals have the centuries on experience and the budget for the man hours and the materials not to mention further research into new innovation. The copies are always playing catchup and never care that much about movement quality as long as they can sort of get the aesthetics similar. When you gain more knowledge and appreciation for the watches movements that's when you realise cheap copies could never beat the real thing in quality. And craftsmanship.

The fake actually has a bit more of a made and painted by hand vibe to it that threw me off a bit at first. I hate fake watches but one looked almost hand painted and the other printed and I liked the rougher looking paint of the fake better!

Just buy a replica. As a processor clock engineer, an high end automatic watch never justifies its price. All you need is a good looking case. As to the movement, an average quartz can beat the most luxurious automatic in every meaningful category.

It's simple math. Buying fake Rolexes is more expensive than buying a Rolex. If you buy a used genuine Rolex you can always sell it and get your money back , if not with profit . If you buy a fake Rolex , you will never get that $300-400 back I can't say the same about Cartier .. cause you can never sell it for the price you bought it for, new or used, you will always lose money. No wonder why fake Cartier is getting better and better.

What about the vintage ones? I have one so old that it only has the Cartier logo and that's it. And some times I doubt it's original. But I know it's old as the previous owner was really really old and he told me he go it from his dad, and I trust him.

imo, i never know why people spend$10k to $50 to buy a watch ,especially buy a luxury watch with quartz movement. the movement may be only worth less than $100 and you are paying several thousand for it, time for people to wake up,

You guys miss the point. Whether it is a $300 Seiko or a $3000 Cartier, they are atleast real and there is a sense of pride from buying something someone else does to the best of their abilities. If you care so much about price, then buy used. If you still can't justify spending $1000 on a watch, then watches aren't for you. $1000 is really nothing if you factor in all other needless expenses. Even so, saving money and buying the real watch is 10x more rewarding than buying a fake. Yeah I bought a fake 1601 datejust, then I saved $3500 for a Oysterquartz. Its a world of difference.

Very true, a $300 Seiko will definitely get you respect from any true watch fan. You don't have to spend $3000 to have a watch you appreciate, and you don't need to spend $100 on a fake of the $3000 one when you can get a high quality decent brand watch for $100 that'll last much longer than the fake.

I see there is a Lot of commentary about why one should/ should'nt buy a fake watch or why the price of a watch is as it is, like thousands of dollars i will bring this argument down to a simple equation. "The function of a watch is to tell time, The function of the brand is to place you in a certain bracket of society Rich/ Poor, In other words your audacity of life, The dichotomy for a person who is buying into a brand fake or real he must realise that the brand is categorising him in a certain strata of society, so the rich buy a more expensive suitcase/ handbag a fancier car more luxurious airplane etc., The fact remains that the primary function of all these products are the ones to look for Product / Function Car Utility vehicle to drive one from Point A to point B Bag Storage device to carry/ store ones goods from damage Purse . Same as above. Glasses . Utlity to protect from Harmful radiation/ Look properly through the eyeglass to read/ see I can go on and on .. However the fact remains that the only reason one should buy a fake as against the original is simple these multinational brands invest millions into marketing a simple product to condition our mind to feel important, The question is do you want to feel important or be important by making a change in someone's life .. however if the technology is right and it serves a purpose then by all means go ahead and invest since it then enhances your quality.
