I just made a pickpocket video as well! I was almost taken advantage of by a very smooth operator on the RER in Paris with his coat over his sleeve. Even though I’m a seasoned traveler, I was ALMOST robbed. Thankfully, after a lot of smacking, I walked away with my leather crossbody purse unscathed-but with new knowledge-experience!

Just saw your video. Looks like they all learned pickpocket fronm the same teacher. Not long ago a guy again with a jacket over his arm tried to get into my front packet but I felt and moved away. Another time a girl on a vespa tried to grab my pack that was over 1 shoulder as they drove by, Another time, this time not so lucky they stole my wife's passport, credit cards and money from her pack on the metro. At the embassy there were close to 50 others getting their passports replaced with us the next morning. Always fun!

@ it’s outrageous! Thinking about the amount of additional government work (starting with their local law enforcement) that has to be done, I can’t imagine why they wouldn’t want to crack down on these people-unless the local government is also getting some kind of kick back from the thugs? And unfortunately, it’s then *our* respective governments that has to do the paperwork on the embassy end-so we’re all (in theory) paying for the crime twice! 🤬

Hello again. We’ve been to Rome 34 times as you know only one time was I a target on the metro . It happened at the opening of the doors as one large fellow blocked my way in . Then 2 or 3 children. Rifled through my coat pockets. They got nothing thank god. But remind people that when the doors open and close that is when it happens.

Another trick is they block your way especially getting on the metro so you can't pass them. We just say SUSA very loudly and push right past them. This calls attention to them and helps warns the absent minded tourist that these people are up to something. Otherwise, we felt pretty safe in Rome. Always be aware of your surroundings.

I’ve seen this trick at work many times.

My travel pants have zippered pockets with velcro flaps. Noisy and tugging at the pants to open. No one has ever tried. I also usually wear a shirt that covers the rear pockets to make it even a bigger PITA for someone to try to get to them.

It looks like you should pretend you are taking a video. Then you see anyone hiding their faces, there's your pickpocket.
