Yet another great video. Steve, I've said it before and I'll say it again: you're my favorite KZbinr. That said, I am reminded by today's video of something my elementary school history teacher said: "Behind every great man is a great woman." Whether she's a wise sounding board, someone who offers ideas, or just keeps the man grounded, her influence is often greater than outsiders know. When you bring Alicja along in your adventures, it's fairly obvious that she's all of the above. May both of you always be the most important part of each other's world. Thanks for sharing.

Just a quick tip...if you move 'inland' by just a bit the prices go down. I paid 6 Euro for a ham and swiss croissant, a chocolate croissant and a large cappuccino. By inland I mean back from the main corner of the intersection. Love the video, glad you posted it!

You in general need to avoid the tourist areas and you'll find the best places to eat.
@barvdw5 күн бұрын
And remember, often you pay extra for sitting outside, or even sitting at all. The cheap shots of espresso are consumed standing at the counter, with or without a cornetto (a cream-filled croissant like Steve and Alicija had). If you go sit outside, it's immediately double the price...

Great video. We were in Rome just the other week, for the first time too. Absolutely loved it. I think we walked about 10 miles every day. Managed to visit most of the places we wanted to, and also managed a trip out to Ostia. Found some great bars and restaurants and met some really nice people. I think that was the surprising thing, the locals were keen to talk to us and not treat us as just another tourist. Late night conversations over drinks until the bars closed, numbers exchanged. Managed to persuade some guys that they should go to Glasgow for their friends' stag do. Bar owners remembering us and giving us tips on where to eat. I decided to be a bit more adventurous with my meals, and ventured into the cucina povera side of the menus. Tripe, oxtail and beef cheeks were all consumed. Absolutely cracking city and can't wait to go back again.

The river is called the Tiber. Rome is under construction for 2 reasons. Reason 1 is that they are extending the metro. And reason 2 is that the Catholic church is having a Jubilee year in 2025. Those weren't Italians queueing. Those were tourists.

Thank you thank you thank you both so very much for this video, I was six years old travelling from the UK to Australia on board the P & O ship Iberia and we stopped in Rome and thus began my love of architecture, we went to the Coliseum and the Vatican the Spanish Steps and so many other places that simply took my breath away. Probably a strange interest for a six year old to have but even then I was taken by the beauty and magnificence of these stunning places, I will watch this video a couple more times tonight and dip into it many times over I am sure. I think I had a 'romanticised' image of Rome, so your video has prepared me for the reality of lots of construction, steel barriers in front of historic buildings, traffic and masses of people. Being slightly claustrophobic; I personally need the reality to prepare myself for the shock of the real. The old architecture is magnificent but of course, I must remember; we live in modern times. Thank you both for sharing your walkabout with us.

You can stroll around at a leisurely pace in the late afternoon and evening and it's completely different. St. Peter's for example is often not crowded at all if you avoid the tourist rush times. Purchasing online tickets in advance also helps.

as a roman if you are planning to visit my city i suggest to you do it in 2026 when the Giubileo (Jubilee) will be over.....Roma will be cheeper and less crowded and if you will have time enough to visit not only the most famous touristic attraction ask me beautiful glimpses of a non-touristy Roma and suggestions on where to eat without ending up in expensive and dubious quality tourist restaurants

I went to Rome 23 years ago on a Interrail trip and whilst it was August and busy it was easy to enter the sites without major queues. Budget airlines have certainly made travel a lot cheaper and easier but in the most popular places it certainly brings the crowds.

I was in Rome last May, stop over on a cruise, took the train to that railway station and the taxi from there went past the Colosseum, the congestion was almost impossible. Couldn't stay long, ships don't wait if passengers get back late! Will be back for a short stay soon, loving what you showed, has given me great inspriation for what can be walked in a day. I doubt I wil achieve over 30k daily steps, but will be close!

We stayed in the Monte area, near wher Julius Caesar was born, our hotel was built in the 1400s! We spent three nights in Rome a few years ago, close to the station like you. One thing that amazed us was the fact you'd be wandering along a normal street, turn a corner and there's a few thousand year old building. Most of the ancient stuff we saw, Circus Maximus, Trevi Fountain, etc, we just stumbled upon. We loved Rome and could have easily spent a whole week there.
