If Magnus destroys Ian again though, then I could see him walking away from the world championship cycle. There is a part of me that thinks Magnus has been incredibly disrespectful in essentially saying he would only play if against Firouzja. But then you look at Magnus' rating and it says everything. He is well out on his own! He toyed with Caruana knowing he'd beat him in the faster time controls, and Karjakin the same. He made Nepo look like a patzer which is incredible when we know how brilliant Ian is.

Playing a match requires a different psychological approach. Looking at his last match with Carlsen I doubt if Nepo has the right mindset, needed for playing matches.

@@grimborn9949 It is tough to come back from a beating, but boxers have done it and they have more fragile egos than even chess players, I think. I just can't see anyone getting the better of Magnus in a best of 14 match situation.

@@AllThisOverASliceOfGabagool Tecnically spoken you are right, but as Aljechin once said: "psychology is the most important factor in chess" and IMHO on this aspect Caruana has the best chances against Carlsen. Strange things can happen though. I only have to refer to the match Aljechin - Euwe in 1935, where Euwe was thought to be absolutely chanceless, but won nevertheless.

Oh boy, Ian is on a mission. If only I could remove the WC match from my memory, I might be willing to jump on the bandwagon. Fabi, make him earn it! Odd to see Fabi's rating lower than Alireza's. I guess after this tournament that won't be the case anymore. Kind of ironic that Ian might be using all the WC prep he never got to use to get a second crack at Magnus(who doesn't want to play him). He might indirectly send the WC in to retirement with it! Surely not the way he originally envisioned that would occur. ;)

What an enthralling day of chess! I'm really curious to see if Ian can consolidate the lead he has and see it through to a second consecutive candidates victory. Such an exciting tournament ahead, I'm sure we will see players in the middle of the pack take more risks as they must, if they truly want to challenge Fabiano and Ian for the tournament win.

Nepo is an awesome player no doubt however there are levels to this and the gap between Carlsen and Nepo is just too large for Nepo to really put up a fight in a set match ,while on paper there are only three spaces between them you could really argue that in reality there are over 35 spaces separating them , insane !

One of the first times I've disagreed with GM King, I thought qb6 into o-o-o looked very natural and even promising. No doubt I'd fail to calculate and watch the position crumble, but it looked like a viable line to my eyes.
@jonasjonass623
@jonasjonass623 2 жыл бұрын
Whites Attack on blacks king is extremly straightforward and looks quite promising due to the pawn structure and the Bishop on the long diagonal. It is not easy to see where black gets his counterplay. I am not surprised that a human doesnt want this, especially against Nepo and with 30 min less on the clock. That isnt a practical choice imo
@1blueeye
@1blueeye 2 жыл бұрын
@@jonasjonass623 it seemed that to o-o-o was the best way forward to to me. Of course accurate play is required, but there was enough dynamism in to keep it level. The counterplay would be targeting whites queenside pawns and attacking along the 1st and 2nd ranks (to me)

One minor correction, per the computer.... Duda was on shaky ground.... until he took with rook on A2. At that point the computer says the position was all but lost for black. It upgraded to completely lost two moves later :P. This was a brutal game for Duda, he was clearly out of his element and didn't really know what to do. Thanks for the expert analysis as always, great video!

Not the biggest Carlstrong fan over here, but I'm pretty sure he will crush the winner of this Candidates. Nepo & Hikaru - mentally broken vs Carlsen. Caruana - a very small chance to win. Rapport, Radjabov & Duda - promising potential, but need to improve. Ding - most likely to be able to beat Carlsen, but going through a rough patch. Firouzja - this tournament perfomance shows he is still a bit green.
@yzfool6639

Radjabov's potential? He has no potential because he looks for draws instead of wins. You can't win when you don't play to win against Magnus.
@tranthaiduong1210

Ding will be crushed by Magnus. He is talented and has shown that he can compete with Magnus on an one-off occasion. However, it has been shown in two Candidate tournament in a row that he is mentally unprepared. If he played against Magnus, he would collapse emotionally like Nepo after one loss. Magnus experience at the highest level is far ahead of anyone here. For me, Nepo and Caruana, if they can learn from their previous match experience, has a far better chance to win against Magnus than Ding.

@@tranthaiduong1210 Last Candidates, he lost Round 2 after a similar loss in Round 1, although MVL is particularly formidable on the White side of the Ruy Lopez though it is fair to say the hesitation in this cycle's Round 1 is a far cry from the 2017/18 100-game streak

kind of frustrating watching firouzja get nothing out of the opening, and then get in time trouble and miss tactics he didn't miss just a year ago. Seems it was a terrible idea take that much time off. Might pay off in the long run but for this tournament, Firouzja is struggling big time. He was in trouble against Richard too, no?

Nothing against Alireza, he is obviously very talented, BUT his 2800 rating was obtained playing the Euro-circuit which is neither ultra strong nor ultra-competitive. Carlsen earned his 2800 the hard way - by beating top grand-masters in top tournaments, more so with fairly mediocre opening preparation. Carlsen is a once in a generation player. You can tell Alireza lacks a little bit of experience in terms of tournament strategy, how to prepare against the top players in the world.

@@mwangikimani3970 absolutely. I gotta be honest, I have never been impressed with Alireza's openings. He is very talented and he can see crazy tactics but so many times he gets nothing out of the opening. Even after these months he didn't play, he still is not getting any edge. 0.00 positions according to Stockfish are not always playable for humans against very top players. His time management is another issue. Very concerning that he gets into time trouble so much.

Black's Queenside castling option looks completely reasonable to me. Black's King can't stay in the middle, and why go to the Kingside where you know a 4 vs. 3 pawn storm is coming? White may decide to push pawns on the Queenside instead, but I'll take my chances there with my pawn majority.

@Joshua I agree. Also, it was Nepo's first championship match, whereas Magnus has already played a number of them. Experience counts for a lot. But, now that Nepo's been through it all and knows how it feels and what to expect, if he manages to win the candidates, he would not be so overwhelmed by his nerves.
