I grew up reading ca. 1962-69 post-apocalyptic/post-nuclear war sci-fi. None of those works dealt with effects on climate, they were more concerned with blast destruction and fallout/radiation effects on society. Even in '75 when I bought land to build on I considered that it was over a ridge from the nearest city and also upwind. I never considered climate change. Fear evolves.

That would be catastrophic and beyond any natural disaster we've been alive to witness. With Russia having just over 6000 nuclear warheads and the USA having above 5000. There is a reason nuclear war leads to MAD, Mutually Assured Destruction... and that's not just something I made up, that's a legit statement for nuclear war. There's almost certainly no nuclear winter though. It's a massive amount of conjecture that requires many firestorms and forest fires to start from nuclear weapons that loft shitloads of stuff into the upper atmosphere. Most real world data shows this will not happen (the most relevant being the 1991 gulf war fires did not loft significant material into the upper atmosphere). The nuclear weapons themselves as powerful as they are are far too weak to do this on their own. There is such a thing as an impact winter or volcanic winter though. But those events are so ridiculously powerful... they are to nukes as what nukes are to firecrackers. Tons of scientists have criticized nuclear winter as being a bunch of baloney because to compare it to what caused the impact winter that killed the dinosaurs is ridiculous. That impact had the energy of about 10,000 - 100,000 times the entire world arsenal.

7:22 you're kind of correct. Most cities and non hardened military targets will suffer an air burst. Most missile silos are hardened and thus can only be defeated through ground bursts. As a result there would be large fallout plumes originating from states with a large number of Missile fields (Co, ND, SD, Kansas, among a few others). So the amount of fallout resulting from a full scale nuclear would be significant

Kansas no longer has ICBM's. Today Montana and North Dakota have the most. Wyoming, Colorado and Nebraska each have some though. All totaled we have only 400 ICBM'S. The USA has a lot more warheads on SLBM'S though. But you are correct concerning the ground burst on these sites. Russia only has about 1500 deployed strratigic warheads and some say as many as half are aimed at our minutemen silos. But others say since Russia has a no first use policy that they are more likely aiming at American cities since the silos would be empty by the time theirs arrived. No one actually knows for certain where the Russian nukes are aimed. I tend to think military and industrial targets are most important and thus will be first hit myself. And I also know that a lot of situations could change their no first use doctrine. A aunch based on false data from their early warming systems is something that almost happened several times and remains a possibility. But all targets other than missile fields will be air burst to maximize damage. Airburst produce little fallout and thus would not contribute much to any global cooling. Also modern simulations seem to suggest not much if any cooling would occur. This was all a theory put forth by the great Carly Sagon. But computer simulations were very poor compared to today. Plus we have a lot less strategic warheads than we did back when this theory was put forth.

There is an hydroponic farm in the US(I think its in the US) so some of the US would survive without food problem. And if u want to prep seriously u should have an hydroponic farm.

the cold isn't the problem. The problem is food. No plants can grow in a nuclear winter. Which means no animals can survive. which means YOU have no animals or plants to eat. If the radiation blizzards don't kill you, starvation will.
