Another thing, the container COUNTS a lot. Plastic, carboard, glass or a tin can will change how you taste the water and even different kinds of plastics will change that. They should've had room temperature glasses of water and do it blindly, having a third person to pour the water because this way you remove bias towards a brand.

To be fair the 'drink water when you're thirsty' is exactly right. The whole "drink x liters of water every day" bullshit was made by companies to sell more water and overhydration can actually be dangerous. Fun fact - you can end a 26mile marathon and end up gaining weight because you drank too much water on the way.

@@baklazan777as an athlete I can confirm that I need to drink absurd amounts per day or else I could literally pass out or die from dehydration. However, if you’re a regular person, there is literally no reason to drink that much. If you don’t do a ton of exercise or sports, drinking when you’re thirsty is perfectly fine. The only circumstance would be if you are outside all day and it is hot or if you are doing something that takes a lot of effort. If you are a serious athlete (like me) if you don’t drink at least 8 bottles of water per day, you will feel fatigued and have some other side effects. A normal person can drink probably 3 or 4 and be good. Trust me, a few years ago I didn’t know the importance of hydration so I would push myself extremely hard while only drinking about 4 bottles per day and one day it was extremely hot and I pushed too hard and I almost passed out and I had to go to the hospital and recover. Dehydration is nothing to play around with and I got extremely lucky I had people around and I something worse didn’t happen. Anyways. Sorry for my TED talk but I just needed to give some input on it

Which is also why the material matters; canned water will always be cooler than plastic (unless you're sat in a furnace or something). Glass will insulate the water better so if you take already cold canned and glass water out of the fridge and wait x amount of time the glass water will be cooler. But if you put them in the fridge at room temp the canned water will get cold faster. Cardboard is dog at getting cold and keeping cold so will usually be the worst material.

the water being in glass, plastic, and cans will definitely change the taste. plastic bottles depending on the cheapness can ruin the taste imo, dasani and generic brand water has really awful plastic, that makes the taste acidic, sharp, and course. fiji has more firm plastic, so it doesn't affect the taste as much. even with sodas and other drinks, glass will always taste more crisp and refreshing.

As a professional water drinker (sober + rarely drink anything other than water), different water DOES taste different. In my experience, cold water is the hardest to differentiate between. You can tell the differences a lot better at room temperature. And in my personal opinion, the best way to test the flavor of water is to test it when its warm/hot. If you've had a nice car warmed dasani, you know that's a STRONG flavor lol. And something that I've discovered is that the warmer it is, the more Smart Water has a Dasani taste. It makes sense, it's the same company. So it certainly isn't worth any/all upcharging. It's just less offensive dasani

But in some areas in Germany I can't drink tap water because it tastes disgusting as fuck which has to do with way higher lime rates in the water. In germany we have a sparkling water thats called Gerolsteiner, im like 99% sure they enrich it with minerals, because when you leave it in a glass and drink repeatedly out of that glass before washing it, you will see mineral lines form on it.

Water is actually gonna taste significantly different depending on the origin and/or processing... I have taste shit tier faucet water, mid tier sweet mountain spring fresh water that has a sweet initial taste and a weird after taste, to bland but good water and then bland but shit water. If you only drink from 1 place, you probably wont notice the difference specially if you're used to 1 brand of drinking water. But yeah... It's not that hard to tell the difference.

To be honest, there are differences in water. At least here in Germany, I don't know if it's the same in other countries. But here there is water with different minerals that make the water taste salty or like iron - the taste is intentional. And is intended to ensure that you get enough minerals. There is also a lot of carbonated water here.

I usually like to ensure the ph of the water is strictly 7 sometimes 8 if I am feeling a little more alkaline. Anything between 6 and below is a no-go. I take the acidity with an electronic ph meter just to be sure. You want a nice crisp balanced flavour so no Dasani! I recommend Aquafina for beginners water if you must go bottled, but honestly room temperature tap water through a filter is the way to go. Then you get all the minerals.

I definitely agree with Lud that all water tastes different! We all have different taste sensitivity and a lot of it is genetic. Some people are super-tasters who can notice details that are subtle or non-existent to others, like how cilantro tastes gross and soapy to some of us! Or like how sommeliers can tell all the different notes in wine, common with coffee and chocolate too. Our sense of smell/taste can also be lowered, like when you're sick, even long-term. Fiji was the first water I tried that I actually enjoyed the taste of. Now I really want to try the Mountain Valley if I can find it!

As a water snob, I gotta try this. Best way is probably blind taste test, all at the same temperature, (maybe in the same type of glass) so the marketing doesnt influence you

To be clear, he's correct when he says to drink when you're thirsty. this whole drink a gallon of water a day is a waste of water. saying it's overrated is a wild statement though

Pee is a good indicator of when to drink water. If your pee is darker then lemonade color, you should drink water. The darker your pee the higher the chance you get kidney stone and kidney stone sucks to pee out or worst they're big enough that you can't pee it out.

Why is everyone talking about the temperature? The only difference it makes is that colder water numbs your tastebuds more, what you should be looking at is the sour level in the water thats the thing that makes different waters taste different

In the last 10 years companies that make thermoses and water vessels have increased the prices and water bottles have become a fad where people talk about their water bottles like they're better than others because they spend $100 on a cup to hold water.

Actually if you only drink water when you're thirsty, you're already dehydrated and should've been drinking more water. You don't need to consume copious amounts of water, but don't wait until you're thirsty either.
