I totally agree. Only a few techniques may be trained full contact, but for most of them it is simply impossible. By the way, sidekicks are so efficient!

Great video. Appreciate the honesty. I wish your student the best on a strong, speedy recovery. I told my old instructor, to get rid of some guys who were going hard contact on beginners & younger guys. He ended up cutting them out. We trained with some ex- military, some guys you could smell the alcohol on their breath in training 🙄. No one wants to get hurt, when you have to be at work on Monday.

The only problem is if the person stutters and doesn’t commit to the forward attack, and you end up losing timing on the side kick, because of there unpredictable stutter, and not commitment to forward momentum. In self defense do tend to do this, they false attacks broken rhythm, stuttering before attacking, they throw in false attacks, and there attacks are broken in rhythm, and our commitment to the side kick to the knee could throw us off, and we could end up losing our own control and balance. Is there a way around this? Working out wether is legitimate forward pressure attack or a hesitation and non commitment broken rhythm false attack, to get us of balance.

you can drill it so the opponents stutter triggers your attack instead of resetting your attack. that why you timing isn't thrown off.

Actually even in sport fighting, both pro fighters and average folks don't do full contact sparring most of the time either. Even Thai boxers, the kind of fighters that everyone think they do full contact every day, only do light sparring since you don't want to get injured before a match. Average folks were taught to go light to each other and only blow full force on the heavy bag since you don't want to go to work the next day with a black eye or dislocated limbs. Even in grappling, the type of martial art that untrained people think you could go full force hugging each other because there's no punch and kicks, also have to go light when performing alot of the techniques since you could easily tear off your partner ACL and break their joints if you don't go slow, not to mention ground n pound training. Should you do full contact training or not is a problem happened in every system, not just JKD because the time you spent healing injuries (even when the targets are not vital) is the time you don't train.

I like it but.... lets be realistic. When I used to fight MMA fighters a few years ago I would approach them on an adjacent angle Dodging most straight forward kicks and hitting them with a barrage of punches... I was successful 90% of the time. So what is to say that if you find somebody who has a similar IQ or if not better how do you think that you will stop them with a pendulum side kick??

Taking into account the context of the video, I would say that JKD's sidekick is applied as a way to intercept the opponent's attack/movement. The idea is to wait for the right time (just before the opponent attacks) to launch an attack that is direct AND non-telegraphic towards the opponent's nearest and most vulnerable target. That is why JKD is so difficult to master. Because to really master it, you will have to train and train and train until detecting an opponent's weight-shift (while under duress and stress) becomes second nature-by which time you would have achieved what Bruce himself referred to as "I do not hit; it hits by itself." The most beautiful thing about JKD (its core principles + body mechanics) is that at the precise moment when someone is thinking about attacking you, they are usually not expecting/thinking about defending. And Bruce Lee was intelligent enough to figure out that this (the moment when the opponent is thinking about launching his attack) is the best and safest time to launch a counter-strike. That's why the JKD footwork and stance resemble fencing-because fencers are extremely good at closing distance quickly. Bruce understood that in order to stay safe (to minimize the damage taken and decrease the probability of getting hit), one has to control the distance in such a way that the opponent has to move towards you first in order to attack you. And then when the opponent's weight starts to shift (he is starting to move to attack you), you either spring forward with a finger jab/straight lead or use the pendulum step to deliver a side-kick to the knee. And because of JKD's structure + body mechanics, you are able to cover distance more quickly. And think about this: if you are quick enough to reach the attacker's vulnerable target before he could even complete his attack, then it doesn't even matter what he throws at you. Because you're going to hit him first. If people really think about, they will realize just how practical and intelligent Bruce's approach is. Having said that, trained fighters do have drills for anticipating and evading counters, but those are usually for when they have already FINISHED throwing their combos. If you watch Mike Tyson fights, you will notice that he will always slip or do some sort of defensive maneuver after he threw his combos. That's okay in the context of sport fighting, but in the streets, the goal is to finish it as quickly as possible and then disengage and get to safety. Anyway. I digressed. Back to your original question. In your question, you mentioned what would happen in a scenario where you fought a person with similar IQ and fighting experience. Well, my opinion is that if you and your opponent both understood JKD and knew each other's methods, there will be no fight. Because both of you would end up standing there waiting for the other person to attack first so that you can counter.

I cocur that certain JKD techniques can’t be trained with a partner, at least not with full force. However, as per my knowledge JKD also comprises techniques that can be trained full contact . I’m also not aware that Bruce trained exclusively as you describe here. The term sparring was often used in conjunction with Bruce. To me there are different levels in street fighting. Depending on the actual encounter techniques that don’t bear the potential to permanently impair an opponent might be sufficient. Think of a drunken person challenging you without a weapon. Would you actually attack the eyes or the knee in this case as your first reaction? In such a situation JKD offers appropriate techniques to prevail and that can ge trained with a partner full contact.
@ThomasMarxJKD
@ThomasMarxJKD 3 жыл бұрын
Bruce did exactly these things. You use jkd only if you have to, that's mostly a split second situation. A drunk person kann kill you with a hidden knife that you nevervl saw, thinking he was unarmed. If you think you can tip tap that person, but need more force on the other one, you are mistaken. Someone who closes gap to you, you newer know their intentions until its too late, if you hesitate.

@@ThomasMarxJKD what’s you take on thugs with knives in the self defense? Those thugs just stab you or there are lots of them. Feels like not many things from fighting doesn’t work against knives. Maybe the stinger is a good self defense weapon. It’s like a bruce Lee bamboo stick but much more flexible and more evil when it hits. Have a look. @@sophiawoods6748 sport training originally came from real combat training so you can't say it doesn't reflect actual combat. Peace time, rules and regulations changed the purpose of the techniques and the philosophy behind them. It's still good for real combat because you will get used to the pressure of someone is trying to rip your head off in a fair fight. For actual self defense, you need to learn more complicate subjects than just "kick him there, punch him here, do this technique and that technique"
