Watch as I try to turn my Swedish torch log as a woodturning experiment with epoxy resin and see what happens! This experiment was not as successful as I hoped, and it's funny to watch! If you're interested in woodturning, be sure to check out this video and see how I did!

I must say, Mike, I'm so impressed by your continuous creativity. Oh, when it flew off the lathe and you said you'd put it to firewood, well...I was telling you: "No, Mike! Mail it to me, I'll treasure your cast off!" But then, you changed direction on the fly and made a tennan. I bow to thee!😊

Wow, glad you were able to rescue this piece. When you mounted with jaws in external mode, I was concerned the soft grain of the wood may not be strong enough, and in a short time we found the answer. A very interesting experiment. A LOT of resin though, so likely the cost of the resin was much more than the torch log. We do not get these logs in the US. I wonder what the machine looks like which punches the shape in the logs. Well done. Dave.
@MikeHolton
@MikeHolton Жыл бұрын
Morning Dave, must admit I have wondered about the shape of the machine as well, does it cut them all in one go or bit by bit. Yes there was a lot of resin, far more than I would have liked and in cost certainly more than the torch. I had some old resin I need to use up so did not feel too bad about it. All the best Mike

Well Mike, that was an adventure! By coincidence, I came in from my workshop because I had a 'mishap' and decided it would be safer to try again tomorrow when hopefully I will be concentrating on what I am doing. So I tuned into your video for some inspiration, and what do you do?? - ably demonstrated that "mistakes happens to all of us", which made me feel a bit better! I can't say I will be following your lead and buying one of these logs to turn, though. I liked an earlier comment about putting a spiky cactus in it, that would have been very appropriate. Well done for selling it! Enjoyable as always, and thanks for sharing.

I like turning weird things to see what happens, I once turned a hollow mahogany egg but instead of hollowing it from the end I went into the side and hollowed out the large end of the egg befroe turning the shape, making the finished egg weirdly off balance and point heavy when you hold it. it also sits a bit point down so I made a stand to hide that so its even more surprising when you pick it up. I had to make a chuck to hold it for the initial hollowing then turn it 90degrees to shape the egg. It was great fun to do but hollowing an accurate ball in an off center piece of mahogany was quite challenging. Resin has made a huge difference to what can be turned and the kinds of projects that can be attempted, things like this are fascinating so thanks for sharing ...I like it.

And for the last weeks, every time I looked at it sitting there in my garage, I had been wondering if I should take it as a challenge on my lathe. Hi Mike, Apparently like many I have looked at these torch logs, ( Yes we have them in the U.S. you just have to keep your eyes open. ) & wondered f if it was worth the effort. Your project turned out well and has provided some good insight. I always seem to learn something and this time I learned I can use an epoxy resin without the pressure pot. ( I hope that was listed in the usual place " below ". ) Working with resin is interesting but I'm just not willing to make the investment for all of the acoutrements that go with the process. It's always interesting watching you work. I might just get one of these and work it just for the hell of it. LOL. Note to self; Tenon not a recess... LOL. Cheers, Bill Riley

Determination. Thanks Mike for showing us that sometimes it is good to persevere, that there is always hope in the right circumstances. I was going to comment on another of your videos along the lines of; you always make beautiful pieces of the highest quality and finish never leaving any stone unturned to get the best out of the blank, yet do you ever consider perverting your own ethos? About making something much more rough and less finished and in that forced opposition and tension maybe you can find some new truths... Then I watch this and here you are indeed starting with an utterly inappropriate blank and exposing its flaws and its beauty and your creativity to us. Jaw droppingly good.

Hi Martin, thanks indeed! I'm still relatively new to turning so my creative journey is still in it's infancy. I have so many ideas I want to try the only problem I have is finding the right wood and time to do it. But we will get there and there is certainly no rush. All the best, Mike

@@loopinnerthe Haha, thanks so much, I've only been turning for 2 1/2 years but have been teaching for the last 22. I work hard on making the videos as good as I can, I don't script them so the style you see now has evolved over the months I've been running the channel. And my editing skills and production ability has just been plain old hard work and determination.

Could you try to place a light in the bowl? apart from being on theme, it could look quite nice depending on the thickness of the resin.

If you turned it top down and went for a bowl you might have gotten the star pattern to form in the bowl. Would look like six slices held together by epoxy, with the rings in the wood for added effect ❤
