Mike Holton - hand made crafts

In this Woodturning project, we're going to be trying something new - partial segmented turning. Segmented turning is a type of turning where the workpiece is divided into small, individual pieces that are turned by hand.
This is a pretty challenging Woodturning project, so be sure to watch the video tutorial carefully and take along the supplies listed to make sure you have a successful experience!
If you're looking for a fun and challenging project to do in your spare time, try out this Woodturning experiment - it'll be worth it!
Thanks for watching and feel free to leave comments in the chat below.

Very nice! Thanks for sharing. To clear the finishing pastes out of the grooves you might try a soft toothbrush. Put the polish rag downhill from the brush and it will catch the clean out. If you use your wife's toothbrush, be sure to put it back before she catches you! Take care, Dave

I love the bowl and the grain in the holm oak. Well done as usual. The "spirits" aka "Murphy" in my shop would not allow me to do a single step glue-up without some issues. You did well to have no glue gaps. Machinists like to use a "V" piece to clamp round items. The "V" provides two points of contact on the round work. I now do the same if I need to clamp round wood items. It is easy to cut a shallow "V" e.g., 5 - 10 deg angle in a piece of scrap. I would have been tempted to put burn lines in the bottom of the bead to accentuate the bead. Dave.
@MikeHolton
@MikeHolton Жыл бұрын
Thanks Dave, I love the idea of a burn line, it's not something I ever do. I will look into a V clamp as the give away bowl will need a lot of clamping" All the best, Mike

Hi Rob, of course you are quite right. I've had a stack of 5 6" blanks on my shelf for ages and not turned one of them. That turned out awesome Mike that Holm Oak has a stunning grain pattern I found true grit better than Y.G it has some carnuba wax in it so you get a nice shine even before the finish Well done

beautiful bowl, but i thought that solid piece of oak had so much character in it i would have liked to seen a bowl from the entire piece! Still great work, as its just my opinion!

Hi Greg, 100% agree with you, I have had 4 of these holm oak blanks on my shelf for forever and because they were not huge(6") I've not bothered with them, plus I had not turned holm oak before so I had no idea how amazing the grain was. When I started turning I got a bit of a shock at how nice the grain was and I am now trying to buy larger pieces of it.

Really nice Mike good contrast that oak looked really nice, not a criticism but isn't it funny how a little black dot in the oak can draw your eye 🙂

Hello Mike. That job turned out nicely, what a jazzy dish. Doesn't the isopropyl alcohol dissolve the wax finish at the top of your bowl when you cleaned off the dust from the inside? Best regards. 🙃
