As an ACO who carries off duty (as I'm not technically a peace officer in my state and have a position of authority. But I do however carry lots of less than lethal on my duty belt) I'm the same way. Also carry some pepper spray or OC. It usually scares most would be thug dogs away.

I will say this I like dogs and I like guns probably two decades ago had a black Japanese Chow lost his marbles for what other reason was attack my younger brother but no apparent reason and without hesitation or second thought I had to send that dog to the afterlife not something I particularly like to do but at that time my brother was still a minor in a my book The Dog adjust better child and I shot the dog without any problems of doing it what I want to do it again not if I didn't have to but if it has to be done I would do it again

Growing up in the early ‘60s, there were packs of wild dogs that would come out of the woods and aggressively go after anyone outside. I would not hesitate to drop a dog like a bag of garbage if I felt it was going to attack as I’ve seen them in action. Keep it on a leash and off my property and we have no problem.

A 170 grain .30-30 soft point is not an effective killer at 40 yards. I went to my loading bench and made some 110 grain loads using Speer "plinker" projectiles. When the pack returned, I learned these bullets are the perfect solution to dogs messing with calves.

Here's a lesson I learned the hard way: If you have to defend yourself from an aggressive dog, immediately assume the owner may be a threat as well. I pepper sprayed a dog in the park AFTER it already bit me when it was coming back for a second try, and the owner saw fit to attack me as well (so he got hosed down too).

When I was a kid my younger brother attacked by a large dog. He had to be taken to the hospital. Even though the attack was over by the time my dad got there, he still dispatched the dog with a single shot because he wasn't gonna take the chance that dog would hurt one of the many other kids in the area.

One part I left out of this initial story was, after all this happened and my brother was taken to the hospital, the doctors were concerned that the dog might of had rabies (the dog didn't seem to belong to anyone, it was just a neighborhood dog that hung around the area), so my dad had to go back to the field where he dispatched the dog and remove it's head (what was left of it) and take it to be tested for rabies, because I guess they test the brain tissue for that, or at least did back in the early 90's.

Pits with owners who think training a dog is synonymous with screaming and hitting. They may have a natural switch in them (ours certainly do) but treated like a normal person treats a dog, they're babies. Even our dogs only act up if the family is rough housing and they don't understand it's play. Don't let them just run about in your yard or in public, but no need to unmake them.

I trained with Alexandria VA Schutzhund club a few times ( I'm up North) this club had about 12 pits , I'm here to tell you they were some the most finest trained beautifully obedient dogs I've ever seen. It's not the breed , it's the human who raised that breed.

Right, I am always armed at home also. Had a dog startle me once while working in front yard. Fortunately the dog was friendly and no problem. Glad I had my gun on me though. I have a lot of kids that play outside in my neighborhood. As a gun owner I feel a duty to be armed to protect them in case of any type of attack human or animal. Won't have time to run up into my saferoom (my bedroom) to get my gun. So I just wear it all the time.

I called the sheriff's department just a few months back concerning a dog attack. The sheriff deputy told me I am allowed to shoot the animal but I am RESPONSIBLE for where the bullet projectile ends up!! Obviously, trying to wrangle your own animal away from an impending dog attack from another animal is very difficult. Practice, train, use proper discipline when discharging Your firearm! As someone who walks in backyards often for my job, I’m glad to know this. I’ve gotten my fair share of bites and have scars from it. It’s really sad and I’m very cautious going in backyards because dog owners often say “oh my dog is so nice he would never…” and it’s hard for people to see how serious the situation can get very quickly

Any tool you are comfortable with works when it comes to protection! I love animals. I'm smart enough to know ya gotta do what ya gotta do to protect yourself and others. At an animal welfare conference training an air horn was successful in turning a dog away. Also gets attention for help. The air horn was specifically recommended for animal control and meter readers. Concealed carry is not always an option for people or minors. Even an elderly person can use an air horn when out for a walk if a dog attacks.

I worked in animal control for a dozen years. We were equipped with and well trained in the use of implements for dealing with an aggressive dog. Yet nearly every one of us ended up having to shoot a dog at some point. In every case, if the owner could be located, they were cited for failure to confine their dog, and if someone was bitten, they were sued for damages by the victim. KEEP YOUR DOG CONFINED!!

We have a leash law in our small town, and very few obey it. What most people don't realize is their pet acts different around their owners, because they are pack animals and you are part of their pack. I had one dog that would let our chickens crawl all over him, but would go and kill the chickens next door. We replaced all his animals and found where the dog was getting out, so we got lucky. I also was able to stop three stray dogs, from pulling down one of the cows belonging to the man next door, two years ago, by shooting right behind one of the dogs.

If a dog does something, that's not the intent of the owner (in most cases), so there's no lawful basis for presuming intent. I've been around dogs my entire life. Strangers' dogs are almost never a remotely deadly threat when they're running amok. Not in the country. Not in the city. Yes, a violent dog can be a problem, but the too-prevalent attitude that a typical pet outside its tiny yard, off a leash, is somehow a huge problem is based in pure ignorance. I understand that city ordinances are there for good reason when you have a bazillion and ten dogs in a postage-stamp of a neighborhood. But it's statistically unlikely your dog is going to cause serious harm to anyone else if it gets out. Even when there is an attack, the majority of them are caused by stupid people acting inappropriately. Do crazy, unpredictable things around animals and they'll react in crazy, unpredictable ways. That's not to say there aren't dogs that are just violent, or that dogs don't occasionally do stupid stuff of their own volition. But getting upset at 99.999% of owners because of the actions of a couple dogs is silly.

The regular mailman was attacked by 2 dogs that actually ate part of his leg. The pictures were not pretty. The police showed up & shot both dogs. Dogs can be very bad...

Most people do not know how much damage a vicious dog can inflict on person in a very short period of time. A small 5 shot 38 special revolver is very concealable any could possibly save a postal worker from being negatively affected for the rest of their life. They, as well as everyone else enjoys the inherent right of self defense. May even come in handy if they have to deal with two legged savages, which I understand to be a growing problem.

So this one hits home with me because just two days ago I was riding my bicycle home from the store and I was open carrying as a dog ran out of a driveway down the road after me and almost bit my leg so I turned around and defended myself with one shot. Now there's a group running around the rural area I live that I suspect are involved with two of my cats disappearing and three with bite wounds. Animal control refuses to round them up or even follow them to where they live.

The dogs you speak of are not pets, they're pack animals. Pets are confined for the safety of the animal and the public. Someone is in charge of animal control where you live, though probably another fat, lazy, useless government employee. But they have a boss, and you may have to do some legwork to find him or her. Get in their faces. Demand they do their job and then take it to the mayor, city council county sheriff or media. Document who you've spoken to and make names available. Shame them all into doing what they're paid to do.

I agree with this video. I had an incident like this earlier this year. I was dispatched to 5 vicious dogs that attacked a woman. When I got on scene, the neighbors managed to get the dogs to stop with rocks and pieces of wood. I could still hear the dogs in the back of the owners yard barking but immediately EMS was dispatched and the badly injured woman was taken to hospital. The owner was not home and the dogs were still loose in the back of the yard. Me and my partner tried waiting until the owner and animal control came but her daughter arrived first. She insisted that the dogs were not vicious and she can get them under control. When they heard her vehicle pull in they came to the side of the yard. As she stood in the doorway of her car trying to call the dog’s name she realized that she couldn’t control them. I told her to please leave the area and as she did, all 5 dogs came out in front of the yard charging. Luckily I had an smg and my service pistol. It took a total of 58 rounds to stop those dogs. 3 of them were king corso and 2 were pit bulls. Each dog weighted a minimum of 80lbs. The owners daughter yelled at us saying that we were wrong for shooting the dogs but I’m sure the victim who lost her scalp and parts of her calf begs to differ. Moral of the story, if your going to have viscous dogs, please make sure they are properly secured!

If the dog is vicious then it should be put down because a vicious dog isn't going to stop being vicious. If you own a dog in general then make sure they are properly secured. You are required by law to have your dogs properly secured and by law you are responsible for what your dog does.

I've been on the fence about getting my CCL but what pushed me over to do it this year was a dog attack I had in February when I was walking my dog. I wasn't bitten, but my dog was, and I still see that dog out all the time. The people have too many dogs, and they all seem aggressive. There was another time when another of their dogs was charging my dog and I and almost didn't stop even though the owner was calling it. That's all not counting the five or six times I've seen those dogs out on the bike trail and turned around before they saw us. If animal control/the police aren't going to do anything about it, what am I supposed to do but defend myself?

I'm a dog lover. I have pure-bred pound-dog -- a yellow lab mix. When I teach the Utah concealed-carry class, I am occasionally asked whether I have ever drawn my pistol in self- defense. I answer, "Yes, once" then tell the story: A neighbor family has a bull terrier. Their front fences consisted of a piece of hog wire fencing wedged between their house and my chain-link fence. Because it was poorly secured, it did a poor job of confining that bull terrier. One day, my wife was in the front yard with a couple of the grand kids and our leashed lab. The neighbor's dog came through the "fence" and attacked one of my granddaughters. Our lab responded to defend the child. After a few relatively minor bites back and forth, the neighbor's dog retreated. I immediately told the neighbor what happened and suggested she get a more secure fence. She said she'd think about it. A few days later, I was out checking the mail when that dog came through the "fence" again to attack me. I saw it coming and yelled a command to get away while pulling my pistol. The dog came within 3 feet, then retreated. I put my gun back in the holster and went to the neighbors' house to tell the nice lady what had just happened and that I was a split second away from shooting her dog. I added, "Please get your fence fixed." She magically was able to get a new fence installed that afternoon. She didn't seem to think the attack on my family and my dog to be important. But, the threat of having her dog shot motivated her.

I would have reported the dog attacking my granddaughter to the police, and presto, neighbor's dog is put down by police/the pound for being aggressive to and attacking humans. Problem solved. I would also mention to the neighbor that if she gets another dog and it happens again while I'm there, I'll just shoot it. Prevent future problems as well.

Something that should have been said, you don't have to wait until the dog bites you, no more than you need to wait to be stabbed to defend yourself, so long as you feared great bodily harm or death. I always try to be across the street from known dog homes when walking my dog. For one, it gives you extra time to draw, but also you would have a harder time explaining why a dog is dead in it's own front yard vs. the street. "I was in fear for my life officer", followed by "I need to go to the hospital, I have chest pains", and finish up with "I need to call my attorney before I make a statement".

A few years ago, my friend's wife (I think she was around 65 then.) was riding her bicycle in the neighborhood when a big dog came out to the road and attacked her. Took a tennis ball sized chunk out of her calf. She had a little pop gun and made the dog eventually stop but not before the damage was done. She has since bought a larger caliber gun. These breeds shouldn't be allowed to run freely. They should be behind a good fence when outside or on a strong leash. Dog is dead now and I couldn't be happier.

It's amazing what a small amount of time teaching basic Obedience to a dog can do. They don't need to "be social butterflies" and love everyone. My Dog didn't. But also my dog would stop on a dime anywhere anytime. Obedience is more important than socializing.

This is one of the rare circumstances where regardless of what the answer was, I would do it. I'm not gonna lose use of body parts, potentially die, because dogs are protected by legality. Anyone who's seen what dogs can do would probably come to the same conclusion.

That’s the thing. Viciously attacking pets ARE NOT protected by any legalities. They are not people. They are not sentient beings. They are considered property. This topic had to be addressed because some people LOVE their pets so much that they forget that the animal is considered property in the eyes of the law. I don’t care how much you love your pet, a pets life is not equal to a human life. Ever. Control your pets. If someone kills your pet because you failed to control it, that’s your fault as the owner. It’s not the person who killed your pet’s fault and it’s not the fault of the pet either. It’s your fault as the owner. Control your property/pets if you want them to live.

I big ass Rottweiler came charging at me, I was walking on the side walk listening to KZbin while taking a walk, I heard a loud growl, looked to my left and seen this dog running down the driveway toward me. I ran out in the middle of the road, drew my Ruger EC9s, click off the safety, leveled the gun on the charging dog, but stopped because the owner ran out and grabbed the dog and as he did that he got close to the line of fire. This happen to me 9 months ago, I cussed out the owner and went to the homeowners association the next morning, they forced the dog owner to either get rid of the dog, or move away, the dog was gone in less than a week.

My neighbor's went through this. The victim has a little King Charles Spaniel and really young granddaughters. The other couple have two Pitbull's. They both have a few acres with about 50 yards of thick woods between their houses. The Pitbull's went after the Spaniel one day. They picked the Spaniel up so it didn't get hurt to bad, still needed the vet though. The couple with Pit's paid the bill. Few months later it happened again. This time was a lot worse and they called the police. The guy with the Spaniel told the couple with the Pit's in front of the cops that if either Pit steps one foot in his yard again he was going to shoot them. A few months later he dumped one of them. Cops couldn't have cared less. Told them to keep the other one on a dog run or put up a fence....dog runs up now.

You missed discussing the most important point of all: Do you have to wait until you are bit by a crazy dog inches away from you or can you shoot him if he is inside your safe zone. Is there a dog version of the 21 foot rule for a person with a knife coming at you? I've had two encounters with dogs while carrying concealed. The first was a German shepard that came toward me slowly while I walked the beach. I stopped moving and put my hand on my weapon under my shirt, but not visible, though the action would signal to a human observer that I was armed. The dog stopped a few feet from me, apparently recognizing that I was not intimidated. The owner saw what was happening, walked over and grabbed his dog by the collar. It was over in 20 seconds. Neither of us said a word. I walked on. In the second instance, I was walking in an urban wooded nature trail. I heard something, thus turned around (barking, but I had neglected to remove my ear plugs from walking along a busy road). A pit bull was full on charging me and was at 60' and closing. I pulled my weapon and trained it on him and didn't move. Again, the dog somehow recognized I was not intimidated, and stopped. Shortly, the owner, out of site, called his dog. The dog turned and returned towards the owner. I re-holstered my weapon before the owner came in sight. Dogs were required to be leashed in that park. I've not had any CCW encounters with humans, thankfully. I'm relatively careful to stay out of or live near rough areas, though that doesn't guarantee safety. It definitely reduces the risk. I've thought a lot about wearing some kind of body camera, like cops do. However, it would need to be, in most situations, not apparent to a casual observer. It's like dashcams in cars: A near necessity these days due to bad or malicious drivers. I predict that personal body cameras will soon be prevalent.

when my son was 4 we were coming back from the park,a couple dogs in the neighborhood got out,had us stopped on the sidewalk ,barking,growing. my boy climbed up on my back,and as I was reaching for my weapon, I cop came over the hill,saw what was happening, got out got between us and the dogs (with his baton in hand),pushed the dogs into a yard,we crossed the street,20 minutes later animal control had them,cop stopped by on the way out,told him I was just getting ready to draw my weapon when he came over the hill,he made it very clear that I would have been totally within my right to shoot had they charged me.

I am an owner of a Pitbull and I agree with you 100%. My dog is fairly well behaved, and gets along with people, but were he to ever attack anyone I wouldn't think twice about shooting him. In my town in Nor Cal Roseville in Placer Co. in the city a guy was walking his dog on a trail and was attacked by an off leash aggressive dog much larger than the mans dog. He shot and killed the dog and there was no charges brought against him. He was able to walk away with his firearm and go to the Vets office.

The last dog that attacked me was a rottweiler, I shot him 7 times at point blank range, and I highly encourage it. He had made runs at two 70 year old women out for a walk the day before and when they came to the city council to complain, the owner told them that if they didn't want bit they needed to find a different place to walk. At that point, he literally signed the dog's death warrant.

I have a close friend who has had to use his carry gun against his neighbors dog. He was unloading his car, and the younger of the neighbors two dogs came over into his property seeking attention. My friend had nudged the dog lightly as a “hey not right now”. The dog took the hint and crossed back onto his owners property. At that moment the neighbor yelled a command and the dogs attitude entirely changed, it turned around and full speed at my friend. He then did have to inevitably use deadly force upon the dog. Whole situation was caught on the 360° camera in my friends car. After the situation was handled, instead of talking to the neighbor or anything he walked straight inside called the police then to his computer, downloaded the video on a flash drive and had it in hand ready for the police upon arrival.

Was out on a morning walk. Two German Shepherds, one still dragging a leash bounded up to me in the middle of the street. Barking, they surrounded me and one growled and started to lunge towards me. I didn't have a weapon. While yelling, as taught to do in case of an animal attack, I picked up a nice sized rock and threw at the one. The other one then lunged towards me barking even more so menacingly. About four or five houses down, their owner came out into the street and called them. They quickly turned, ran back to the house, and he hustled them inside. As I continued my walk, I flagged a police officer and reported the incident. He told me I had the right to shoot them if I had had a gun. When the officer knocked on the door no one answered. He drove around the corner and waited until he saw the guy get in his truck to leave, about ten minutes later. Pulled him over and confronted him about the dogs. Guy lied and said they were playful and wouldn't bite. Not only was he lying about that, but he said his dogs were leashed, and had not left the fenced yard. Point being, owners are the problem, not dogs. However, the consequences of an irresponsible owner are borne by the dog, since they represent the immediate threat to be neutralized. As a responsible gun owner, you have the right to protect yourself and your family from hurt, harm, and danger. Dogs that present in the act, any kind of threat to that safety and health, can and should be quickly dispatched without hesitation.

I've had dogs all my life. I was with the Sheriffs Office and serving a summons at a house. After knocking on the door several times I heard the back door open and shut. Next thing I knew there were 2 pit bulls at the base of the steps approaching and wanting to eat me. I used a clip board to hold them off. When they would not leave I pulled my Browning High Power , Knocked on the door and told the person inside to open the door or he was going to have two dead dogs. Plus he was going to go to jail for releasing them on a Deputy Sheriff , considered the dogs as deadly weapons attacking me. He opened the door , much to his displeasure.

I was going to buy some burning barrels of a local guy. I parked my truck and began walking towards him, another guy, and a German Shepard. The owner gave a command to the dog and it came flying after me. I thought I was dead. Then the dog stopped right in front of me close enough to touch him. The two guys started laughing and I was mad as hell. Short conversation about the barrels and I just left buying nothing. Had I had my 40S&W, I would have dropped that dog. He was in a dead run, teeth bared directly at me.

I just need to add before I finish this video that the thing that makes me really mad is when you draw your firearm or a can of spray on an attacking dog and then the owner gets mad at you as if you are the one in the wrong. This has happened to me in the past and I highly resent it since it is absolutely the owner's fault that the attack is occurring 90% of the time.

Killing a DOG. The Department a few years ago. They shot a dog that was all scared in next home over yard. The cops got filmed by there cams all high Fiveing. Boy talk about out cry. I'm an ACO. If the dog is a immediate present threat to serious bodily harm or death kinda like a human. Then in my city atleast you are allowed to dispatch the dog. However. If you can, just to avoid a headache and a long night taking statements, carry some OC Spray (also good for human threats). That usually scares them off.

I have a carry permit and use a service dog.. my service dog was attacked by a neighbors severely aggressive english bulldog (found out it has a history of biting family members, it's owner and their other dogs.. never reported then.) This dog was trying to kill my puggle. If it wasn't for the service vest on my dog, he would have been mauled much worse as she grabbed hold of his chest vest and kept shaking him, not letting go. My service dog received a severe laceration on his shoulder and a small one on his ear. He is doing ok but has retraining for emotional damage and physical damage that ran down his leg causing infection and scaring. This was reported to the police, and the owner is paying for all damages.. But such an attack is no different than a disabled person being attacked because it put me in danger as soon as I stepped out of my car in front of my home. My dog was unable to work and perform his duties for my disabilities.. this is no different than taking away assistive devices or medication for my disabilities unlawfully because of negligent owners. Be responsible or pay for damages from your dog because now I wish I did react and at the moment I did not have my firearm on me.. but next time I will not hesitate because this caused further severe trauma upon me, my legal service dog and my loved ones who witnessed it. I now carry a taser as well. If I can not stop any further attack next time from anyone, I will need to protect my well being no matter what if people are irresponsible, regardless if it was an accident you are still responsible for your animals and their behavior!!! I truly love animals, and life on many levels. It pains me when people choose ignorance over responsibility. If you own an aggressive animal you are responsible period!

The legality in Ohio is this, falling under the leash laws: (I am in a rural area with livestock. I routinely carry on property.) 955.28 Dog may be killed for certain acts - owner liable for damages. (A) Subject to divisions (A)(2) and (3) of section 955.261 of the Revised Code, a dog that is chasing or approaching in a menacing fashion or apparent attitude of attack, that attempts to bite or otherwise endanger, or that kills or injures a person or a dog that chases, threatens, harasses, injures, or kills livestock, poultry, other domestic animal, or other animal, that is the property of another person, except a cat or another dog, can be killed at the time of that chasing, threatening, harassment, approaching, attempt, killing, or injury. If, in attempting to kill such a dog, a person wounds it, the person is not liable to prosecution under the penal laws that punish cruelty to animals. B. I'm now 66 years old. I can't afford a vehicle, so I usually have to walk or ride my bike every where. I've had to do this for about 20 years now. I've had my share of run- ins with large aggressive dogs. Fortunately, I came out ok. The last year or so,I've been armed while out walking, for the express purpose of defending myself if I'm attacked by a large and/ or dangerous dog. In all my past experience, the dogs were near me in a matter of seconds, totally unexpected. I will escape the situation if I can,but I'm sum0ly not physically able to run fast enough. I was working on my scooter one night at about 2:00 am. I had the garage door open. I also had my firearm on my side. I heard something out in my driveway and motion light popped on. I went on high alert mode. I cautiously did an immediate investigation and noticed a large pitbull look at me. I froze and quickly drew my firearm and shot it. He never backed down or showed any friendly behavior or posture. I told my wife to call the police. GREAT video and thank you for covering this subject! Unfortunately deadly dog attacks have occurred several times over the past few years here in North Carolina and ended terribly. The people involved were usually unarmed and suffered terrible injuries, even death. The attacking dogs, usually pit bulls, were almost always seized and destroyed by the authorities. In most cases, the people attacked were unarmed and mostly defenseless and also did nothing to provoke the dogs. We never walk around our neighborhood without some means of self defense such as a pistol or pepper spray. There are a lot of dog owners that need to learn responsibility for their dogs such as safely restraining or confining them !

If a person's small dog is still attacking someone, I wouldn't shoot it, but probably give it a swift kick to ensure it doesn't attack me again. However, if someone shoots a dog, regardless of size, that is attacking them, then I don't feel they've done anything wrong.

When I moved to a rural area it became evident that there were a lot of dogs just roaming the streets. After a few months of living out here I asked a deputy sheriff about animal control. He said to me, "I advise you to buy a shotgun to take care of nuisance animals ". He made it clear that I didn't have to wait to be attacked or for my livestock to be attacked, if an animal was making a nuisance of itself on my property that I had every right to remove the threat.

Years ago, I had a job doing door-to-door sales. I was viciously attacked by a large dog that clamp down on my leg, just above the kneecap. I had a concealed carry weapon which I produced and aimed right at the dog. In my head, the thought process flashed within a fraction of a second. “If I get seriously injured, I can’t walk. If I can’t walk, I can’t sell. If I can’t sell, I can’t provide for my family. It’s my livelihood versus this dogs life.” Thank goodness the dog let go, I’m not sure how much more pressure I need it on the trigger before it would go, but it could not have been very much. I called the police, and distanced myself from the home. I’m glad that I didn’t have to take a dogs life that day, but I will not hesitate to do so if the alternative is me losing my livelihood.

With very few exceptions - you are required to restrain your dog. I would never harm any person's properly restrained pet. However - when the owner or responsible person for the animal fails to secure the animal creating the necessity for force defense - I would regretfully use the force required to stop the attack that was a result of neglect and irresponsibility of the owner / responsible guardian of the animal. I have on several occasions caught people's escaped pets and taken them back home , under no obligation to do so. I did it because it was right and because of the golden rule. I am not required to tolerate a potentially deadly attack by human or animal and I will not.

As a retired police officer I could write pages of stories about cops and dogs. Fortunately, I never had to shoot one, I threatened to shoot one that managed to rip my trousers on a service call, and the dog's owner promptly called it away and secured it. Three years ago I purchased a house in a different city one of my new neighbors warned me about a pit bull that was allowed to roam free in the evenings and would aggressively charge at people. This neighbor even gave me a copy of the city's dog ordinance. He told me he had shot at the dog on one occasion, missed and his pistol jammed. (An old pocket hammerless 25 auto, he should expect that sort of thing.) One evening I walked down my driveway to check my mailbox and met this pit bull. It came all the way across one neighbor's yard charging at me growling and showing teeth. I carry a SIG p365 all the time. I drew my pistol and aimed at the dog while yelling at him to go away. My decision point to fire was if the dog reached my driveway, the lowlight activated my night sights, and I had good sight alignment and sight picture. The dog stopped short of my drive, growled once, and retreated, looking back and growling while it went home. I am a dog owner myself, and I was new to the neighborhood and did not want to shoot someone's dog. I think the fact that I stood my ground and yelled at the dog caused it to break off the attack. Had it reached my determined shoot point, it would not have lived and I would have sworn a warrant out for the owner, charging him with harboring a vicious animal. I'm glad it worked out the way it did. I checked my mail and went back inside. And I never saw the dog out again. In conclusion, I could have filed a report with the police, but I didn't, because being the new guy in town I didn't want the reputation of calling the cops all the time. And I didn't want problems with the owner. I understand he was the type of guy to threaten people over his dog. My advice to others is don't let a dog bite you or bite another person or a child. And if you shoot, hold your fire until you can make the shot(s) count. Keep up the good work guys.

You are a rare example of dog owners. Most people own their dogs as proud possessions and treat them as objects of possession. I grew up out in the country of Montana. We had problems with city people "releasing their dog back into the wild". They would pack up and kill livestock. The locals and farmers didn't really have patience for them and utilized the three S's. There was an instance where my dad had a Rottweiler come up on him barking and growling while working in the barn. We'd seen the dog on our property a couple times and left the old paintball gun handy just in case. Drove it off. My siblings were around 5 to 11 at the time. It was a wake up call and we started utilizing the three S's.

I've been a runner since JHS, ran for college and continue to run as an adult. I've been confronted face-to-face by aggressive dogs on foot countless times, and had to jump up onto a shed in a split second's notice to get away from one once. If you haven't experienced it yourself, I don't think you can properly understand how scary it feels to stare down an aggressive pit bull when you are completely unarmed and alone. I am taking a class to get my CCP now and also have started to carry high-quality pepper spray as well. As the host said in the video, I don't *want* to shoot anything, but I will defend myself if my life is threatened.

I've been running since the 7th grade. Now in my 60s. Look into carrying a North American Arms 22cal. revolver with the shortest barrel possible(1 and 1/8 inch). They are good for 5 shots only. Used to carry one while running down country roads. Don't buy the magnum! (You won't get much extra velocity with short barrels because the powder doesn't have enough time to burn.). If you insist on something bigger, go for a Keltec P32(32acp). Not as small, but very small and lightweight. Happy Running!

Before I was a gun owner and CCW, I faced an incident in my neighborhood. Dogs are required to be on a leash. I was walking my 5lb chihuahua on a leash, when 3 houses down and across the street, a dog and his owner were outside in their front yard. I have never seen or met him or his dog. I didn’t even notice them until all of a sudden his unleashed, large Rottweiler/Bulldog looking mix takes off full sprint towards us in a non-friendly, attack mode manner. I immediately am trying to get my dog off the ground and pick her up to protect her but she is terrified and running circles around me on her leash, in and out between my legs hysterically. I threw my brand new iphone out if reflex to free my hand, which it completely broke. I was able to finally burrow down over her, scraping my hands and knees on the concrete to catch her and run off. Only after all this has happened and the dog is a few feet away, growling and barking, and I’m in tears, scared to death, the owner whistles and he retreats back to his yard. The whole time the owner was laughing at me and what took place. I ran home and called animal control just to record the situation, and I told them I was NOT pressing charges, even though I wanted to since I was so upset. After thinking it over, I decided it was only fair to ask the neighbor to help pay for a new phone. However, before I could even speak to him… he posted HIS security camera footage of the entire incident making fun of me on the fb neighborhood page, which was even more humiliating bc you can see me scared for my dogs life, scurrying to protect her, my phone goes flying, and he’s laughing the whole time, only calling his dog off finally seconds before reaching us….. sorry for the long story. But my question is…. If there is a rule that states dogs must be on a leash, and if a dog that appears to not be so friendly or playful, but instead sprinting towards you and your dog, do I have to wait to shoot after I’m attacked or can I shoot once it sprints towards me in an aggressive manner and is seconds away from reaching me?

Have beem attacked by large dogs 3 times walking in my neighborhood, once when with my young child. Each time the dog was not on a leash & each time the owners said "I dont know what happened, he has never done this before" or "always so well behaved". Got lucky 3 times because they charged straight in and didnt like being punched in the nose. Absolutely- bad dog usually has an owner issue-

Actually this reminds me of a day I was at work and saw a woman being threated by a dog. I drove my work van across the field they were in and jumped out with the key I'd just picked up to open a building I needed to get into. The key was chained to a foot long piece of plate steel so I jumped out with that chain wrapped around my fist holding that plate steel. The dog took one look at me coming at him and changed his mind about attacking the woman and took off. I jumped back in my truck and made sure he was serious about leaving and followed him out of the field. Aggressive dog, stupud owner, same old story. Sure, I'd much rather smack the owner with that chunk of plate steel, but until that's legal you can only deal with the immediate threat of physical harm.

Pepper spray can give an option for a lower level of force on a hostile dog that isn’t an immediate threat yet, but is likely to become one if not deterred. Pepper spray is great at interrupting brewing physical aggression.

Great topic as always. I live near Philadelphia and a ccw holder had to stop the threat from 2 dogs trying to rip apart a 7 year old child with disabilities and the guy had to shoot one of the dogs to stop the attack. I have a Rottweiler my family and I do are best to bring him up as good as we can but I’m not in his head to control him if he gets out of control. Just like people dogs can flip and become very bad. Some dogs are by far stronger than others. My youngest is 9 he is never left alone with my dog because of the chance of something happening. It does not matter what you do or you think that your dog would never do.

I live in a condo. The first landing of my staircase takes me past my neighbors deck, at my shoulder level. Their son was visiting with his large dog (80 lbs +). It came at me through the patio ballards. It happened so fast that my body just reacted in a nanosecond, and i punched what was attacking me. The punch broke the dogs snout. My neighbor pressed charges. The police said he had no grounds since the dog was not his. They then tried to get me because I was a martial arts instructor, and as such had lethal skills, and had invaded their property. My lawyer pointed out that their property ended at their door. The patio was "common" property, owned by the HOA. As such, their son's dog was not restrained as required by county law, and they were welcome to take me to court, as was I. We've not heard from them since. This was 3 years ago.

I live in a rural area, my wife and I enjoy taking long walks and riding our bicycles. We have encountered times when people allow to let their dogs run loose. Often someone visiting the area and thinks it's a good idea to let their dogs roam. And 3 times last year I or my wife were in imminent danger.

I don't remember if I was carrying concealed at the time. I was walking my dogs, and a couple of kids were walking with their dogs (no leash). The kids' dogs decided to attack my dogs (big mistake, mine were much bigger). I got between the dogs (and took a couple of minor wounds) until the kids could control their animals. Deadly force was not necessary in this instance, but parents, if you have your kids walking their dogs in a suburban setting, make sure they keep them on a leash, and are physically able to restrain them if necessary. I am getting on in years now, and walk my dogs one at a time for this very reason; If both of them go after something at the same time, I would be hard-pressed to restrain them. I take the extra time to keep my neighbors and their pets safe, you can do the same.

Dogs are animals. Animals are considered property. You might not have the right to shoot someone to defend your dog, but you are well within your rights to shoot ANY dog that is posing a genuine threat to people.

I have always been a dog/wolf guy as well as being a firearms owner/carrier. That aside if an animal dog or whatever else starts to attack I am going to use my firearm to dispatch it. Even if it is my own. In the past I have unfortunately had to do it three times one being my own dog. I hated the situation happened, but I did what I had to do too not only protect myself but others. Edit: At the time I was living on the family farm.

There are 2 parts to a dog, the genetics and the training. Absolutely no dog should be given full trust. Of the people killed each year by dogs, the Pit Bull kills half of them. Most of the others are killed by Rottweilers, German Shepherds, etc. Pit Bull owners always say their dog is the sweetest, kindest dog, but then one day it just turns and kills the owner or someone else. If a dog was breed to be a killer that is what it is.

My daughter was attacked by our family Golden Retriever. She was 1.5 years old. She had multiple deep lacerations on her forehead, face, and neck. It happened so quickly and unexpectedly. This was a well-loved dog who just snapped for no reason. I say this: I wish I had had my pistol on me at the time. Needless to say the dog is 6 feet under where it belongs. I went from a lifelong dog lover to a lifelong dog distruster. I don't even leave my daughter alone with my king cavalier-beagle any more.

From experience, have had to deter attacking dogs a few times, usually more interested in attacking my dog, than self. One discharged round has 100% of the time stopped the attack without having to shoot the offender. That said, would I if the attack continued? ABSOLUTELY.

Same. Twice now while walking my dog i've had another dog come running while aggressively barking. Both times the warning shot immediately rectified the situation. However, both times, I was prepared for the second shot not to be a warning.

Last year I was working in a neighboring state where my state's CCW doesn't have reciprocity, so I was unarmed. I needed something from my car and when walking back to my client's house, I was charged by a pit bull from about 80 feet away. The owner was calling to it, telling it to stop, but the dog was poorly trained. I had nowhere to go, running would have made it worse. I was able to fight it off with what I had in my hands until it backed off, and I was uninjured. Had I been carrying, I probably would have fired. To add insult to injury, the dog was wearing a collar that had big, bold letters: "Service Dog." I didn't talk to the owner, my client did. When I left my client's house I went straight to the local Sheriff's dept and applied for a CCW, and had the card about a week and a half later. I also started carrying pepper spray everywhere. I don't want to shoot an aggressive dog if I don't have to, and it's good to have options between a harsh word and a gun.

There's also the instances where the dog is still attacking but when you defend yourself in a manner that hurts the dog, the owner also joins in while the dog is still attacking too. The question might be about the owner getting shot during that attack. (Info: I'm a retired mailman, and we had a dog owner attack. When the dog was pepper sprayed the owner attacked at the same time as the dog. Yes, if was a pitbull. The mailman was knocked down and fighting with a woman on top of him while trying at the same time to keep the dog from also getting to him.)
