Retin-A has much more research backing it up for anti-aging and overall skin quality. The thing is, it's prescription-only, so dermatologists can't make money by selling it (unlike glycolic acid). There's an obvious conflict of interest here because Dr. Schultz has his own glycolic acid products available for sale on the internet.

Hi Crystal, You can use both glycolic and sunless tanner in your routine. The glycolic will create a smooth surface to give you a streak-free tan. You may have to reapply your sunless tanner a day or two early due to the glycolic, but you can ensure you'll get a smooth application

This guy is wrong. Glycolic acid is a good exfoliant but Retin-A not only exfoliates but also treats and improves the skin below the surface. Glycolic doesn't do that, it only exfoliates.

Yes. My dermatologist prescribed me some cream "I don't remember the name" bit it has a mixture of glycolic acid, tretinoin and contains 6% of hydroquinone.

I'm sticking with my Retin A.

The benefits of Glycolic acid don't just stop at exfoliating the skin, it has many other benefits, including helping acne prone skin as it prevents dead cells from forming new blackheads, or pimples. It also draws moisturizers into the skin, unlike Retin-A which leaves the skin extremely dry, not to mention that Glycolic acid is known to improve the photo-aging processes, as it stimulates the production of elastin and collagen, and there are actually many studies out there regarding this issue.
@lalam489810 жыл бұрын
hmm my understanding is that retin A is not an exfoliant but actually thickens the dermal layer, whereas Glycolic is an exfoliant and creates a smooth surface. Retin certainly does not act as an exfoliant on me anyway! I use retin A .1% and have never had any peeling but I've found adding glycolic 15% either on alternate nights or 12 hours apart from retin A has started my skin shedding lightly so I feel it's complementing the retin A.

Hi Giada, Yes, you can use glycolic all year round. Just be sure to use sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 15 to 30 daily to protect your skin and reapply every 2-3 hours or immediately after swimming or sweating.
@allthingskim11 жыл бұрын
Hey! So glad you mentioned this. I have been on doxycycline too for nearly 3 months. Dr. Schultz actually answered my question about this on a recent viewer questions episode... under my name "Kim A" and I was the first question answered (listed in the description box). Basically he told me to reduce my dose until I was barely taking any as opposed to stopping completely. I am supposed to be on it for 4 months two times per day. I reduced my dose (myself) and am taking 1 per day now.
@Barkingspider6 жыл бұрын
Doc, you’re wrong about using retin A in the day. Regardless of sunscreen the light effects the efficacy of the product. Retin a works best when the body is at rest/sleeping and repairing itself. i.e. deep sleep.

While I can't speak to other brands' glycolic treatments, I recommend to my patients to use moisturizer after their BeautyRx glycolic product if their skin feels tight or flaky
@dermtv11 жыл бұрын
I recommend glycolic exfoliants to all of my patients, not just those with oily or acne-prone skin. There are certainly brands that formulate glycolic products for all skin types, such as my own, BeautyRx, and others. I suggest searching online for products that are suitable for your skin.

Hello, Dr Schultz. I am concerned about Retin-A as my first choice for my aging 44 year old skin and I think AHAs may be better for me to start with? I just concerned with harshness Retin- A could have on my skin because its sensitive. So I will look into glycolic acids as my first choice. Thanks Dr Shultz! I will look at beautyrx and see what you have.

I was using Skin A ( .5%) Tretinoin on my skin for past 1 and a half month. I bought recently granactive retnoid 5% . ShouldI continue with Tretinoin or should i prefer Granactive Retnoid? Please repmy. Also now I have ordered Glycolic . Which I will use as per ur advice
@Alaznel11 жыл бұрын
That's bloody stupid argument. Since its prescription only, dermatologist would make MORE money with retinol than glycolic because patients would need visit to get them. Glycolic acid product can be bought nearly everywhere now days without the need for doctors meaning they would be losing money with glycolic not with retionol.

While a glycolic exfoliant will remove the existing brown pigment in your skin from a sun spot, a depigmentor is also required to "turn off" the cells producing excess brown pigment. You should also be using sunscreen to prevent new brown spots because there is no point in treating brown spots if you are just acquiring new ones. For acne scar treatment, see the episode "Removing Acne Scars" youtube(dot)com/watch?v=g9V9-ANB7dg

Dr Schultz, I got a 40% glycolic acid treatment to be used around once a month. i had used it just one time (with sun protection, of course), and I really like the results My question is, since you always talk abot glycolic creams with a low percentage, what is better: use a high concentration glycolic treatment once in a while or use an every day cream with a low percentage of g. acid?

Elaa Hilou no, change the glycolic for a 1% or 2% Salicylic acid with an adequate PH to offer proper exfoliating, it worked better for acne cause it goes deep into the pore lining, unclogging dead cell skins, bacteria and sebum, glycolic works mostly in the surface and is recommended for fine lines and wrinkles( Paula's choice makes affordable ones, the clear line is the cheaper one) sun screen is a must even if you're not using any exfoliant, the sun creates inflammation in acne prone skin and makes acne worse by thickening (clogging pores) the upper layer of skin, change to a mineral base sunscreen without alcohol or harsh ingredients, the sting comes mostly from chemical sunscreen, which have a better texture but some people can't tolerate them, hope this helps.

Hi Dr. Schultz. I'm new to your channel and I notice that you highly recommend glycolic acid (and other chemical exfoliants) for exfoliating over physical exfoliants. But I've heard many people talk about how good microdermabration is and they're willing to spend a lot of money to get it done by a dermatologist. As a dermatologist, what would you recommend between the two?
@katieholiday75835 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for the video. I was considering using the two together and learned something today from your video so I won't bother. My skin is super sensitive to retin A so I hope glycolic works better for me.

Hello doctor, I have a question. I've been taking Doxycycline for almost 2 months now and have gotten great results. I'm almost acne free except for my hyperpigmentation and some chest/shoulder acne from excersice. My question to you is: " Does acne return after you stop taking Doxycycline, and if it does when...or do you have to take the antibiotic for life? I heard acne becomes resistant to Doxycycline and some people say it doesn't become resistant. Thank you doctor.

@Kamadice11 жыл бұрын
What do you mean by "treats and improves" the skin "below the surface"?
@Alaznel11 жыл бұрын
That's the same action as retinol. Glycolic sloughs off the dead skin layer same as retinol. The removal of the old horny layer induces the skin to produce and replace the old skin, thus allowing for brighter younger looking skin. This skin renewal action also leads to a strenghtening of the dermis and less wrinkles due to enforce collogen production. Retinol and glycolics both have the same results as hey are both exfoliations.
