The hoverpads were infinitely lifting you up because they were above another block. To hover correctly, the hoverpads need to be the bottom-most blocks.

I think the reason this setup, generates movement is because the "rotors" are trying to spin the craft, BUT since every rotor has another rotor countering its rotational movement, essentially instead of completely cancelling it transforms into Linear motion (idk why or how, it makes no sense, but it looks like thats what's happening); so the power of the setup is essentially the Torque generated by the rotor with the craft's CG, the greater the arm from the CG the greater the Torque, more Torque = more power = better Power/Drag ratio = higher speed

The reason that the proximity matters is simply bc they cause drag in space, meaning they're pushing energy to move. The proximity determines how much energy the engines are fighting from each other, which overall effects the top speed

If you make a logic system that turns off the quantum rudder at certain points in the rotation you can make it so that only the pushing part of the rotation has an active drag inducing quantum rudder, this might improve the speed

This is really interesting. I'm curious if there is a top speed possible for the quantum drive and wonder what spacing from each other they need to be. I also wonder if you could make the quantum drive engine into different shapes. (Triangle, circle, pentagon, hexagon...and get different speeds.) Is rectangular really the best shape? Would love to see a follow up of this where you try more designs and testing.

I really hope you build steamboat style space ship after this. It'd be quite fun to see how fast you can get it going. Also! I'd argue the benefit of the quantum dive would be realistically industrial work. If you want to take inspiration from anything, certain forms of mining equipment actually uses basically legs to move because it's too heavy for wheels. The quantum drive as you describe it does not care about weight, can move both into and out of gravity wells with some easy, and retains a level of controllability thrusters don't provide. So it'd be perfect for something like an asteroid miner once it gains enough speed to catch up to them.

Kosmo now you have to flip that initial working paddle concept side ways so that instead of going up and down, you are moving forwards and backwards. Then build a space craft around that. Maybe even make a cross of 4 rudders or a stack.

The craft you created would make a great Escape Pod. highly visible trails mean it's easier to spot, and being orange also makes it easier to spot. it can hold a bunch of people like the kind of escape pods you would find on an oil rig (AYO fishing owns one and has camped in it before, if you're interested. it has a diesel motor for propulsion) only thing that would likely need to change to make it an effective escape pod is having the occupant entrance on the back, between the paddle wheels.

To make the quantum rudder propeller, you'd have to lower the stability stat of the rudders. It's the stat that makes turning with it actually make you turn.

Between the general shape and the forward staircase being used as landing gear... yeah, this is the "we have the Planet Express ship at home"! lol A bit surprised that the two pedal wheel idea worked, it would not have done so under water IRL. My inclanation would have been with pistons and tilting rudders, just use more pistons in a row and use logic blocks for a more precise sequencing. Maybe use servos instead of hinges since they are faster?

Food for thought: A paddlewheel isn't fully submerged in the water, only 1 side is. If it would be fully submerged you wouldn't really go anywhere. It's really bizzare that the craft even moves as-is, i think you should try disabling the quantum rudders when they're not near the center of the 'engine' so that only the quantum rudders that push you forward are enabled.

maybe you can retry this concept but instead of a big long rescue ship you make a more slim but tall or wide design that has them at opposite ends of the back for propulsion since at the end we found out proximity of the rudders affects them.

I think ypu dont need to make it spin, you can just put an even number of quantum rudders with the same input and half of it programmed to pitch the reverse direction to the other half. Just guessing

now you need to setup some logic so the paddles that would give you resistance are turned off for 180 deg, then it probably would not matter how close they are. or you could try having the two on the right both spin in the same direction and the two on the left both spin opposite to the right.

If the quantum drive can get up to something like 500-1000 kph without getting too bulky, the instant acceleration and braking could make it excellent for dogfighting. A very controllable and unpredictable aircraft would be rally hard to hit.

I think irl something like this would be the go to way to just go up, or at least to get things started. I know it takes a lot of sideways speed (something like 17000 miles per hour?) to actually be in orbit, but... maybe you could send an unmanned ship up really really high, then accelerate sideways when you're far enough away that your max speed is a reasonable speed for the periapsis of an orbit with close to the same total energy as the orbit you want, and then you could even adjust the shape of your orbit by using your rudders as rudders, without using rocket fuel?

A quantum rudder would work. Just have to use logic or sensor to turn off each rudder at a set point in the arc. Resistance on the forward arc. None on reverse. Switch polarity to reverse

I have a theory about how quantum rudders work, and I think I can get a modified version of your first/second design working. By turning the rudders sideways and angling them (you may need something for counter rotation or a second opposing rudder wheel. This might fix or reduce your speed issue in your final design).
