Can you wax really short hair? This is a question that you will constantly get if you’re a waxer. I can’t even tell you how many times (especially when I worked at European Wax Center) how often I would have to turn customers away because their hair wasn’t long enough.
I would even have people who shaved 2 days prior trying to come in and get waxed! Not gonna happen.
First, I’ll go over the ideal waxing time length. Your hair should be at least ¼-inch long or around the size of a grain of rice in order to wax. How long does that take? It should take between 3-6 weeks of hair growth. Anything earlier than 3 weeks runs the risk of the wax may not be able to grasp onto the hair in order to remove it. This will result in the wax just breaking off the hair and not actually pulling it out from the follicle.
If your hair is too long (longer than 6 weeks), the wax itself will become much more painful since the wax will start to “pull” on the hair when it’s being applied. You will most likely also have multiple hair growth cycles which means some hair will come out great, but other hairs won’t because it’s on a different cycle and shorter.
If the hair is really long (as in you haven’t done any kind of maintenance for say 4-6 months), most likely the hair won’t be pulled from the root because the hair will be so thick, it makes it extremely difficult for the waxer to get the wax to adhere to the base of the hair.
Now if I had to choose between waxing someone with hair too short or too long… I would absolutely choose the customer with hair too long. It’s much less problematic and the chance of your wax still coming out smooth is much greater than someone with too short of hair.
