Ben, I am working from home on a desktop computer provided by my employer. I wear a headset for incoming calls and outbound calls to customers. There have been times when I accidentally had the mute button on and the person on the other end can not hear me until I unmute. I have recently noticed a little white microphone icon on the bottom of my screen, and I am wondering if my employer can hear me through my computer, even if my headset is muted.

@@kc3074 Where is it located on your screen? If it's in the bottom right next to the clock and volume control etc, it's probably just the microphone icon on the Windows taskbar. However if it's a work computer I'd always just assume they can monitor everything (depending on your job you could probably just ask your employer).

@@BenFinio Thank you for your response, Ben. The little white microphone icon is at the bottom, right next to the clock. I just don't like the idea that someone could be listening to my personal calls I have on my personal cell phone while I am on break. I work in claims for a large insurance company and every call may be monitored, and every call is recorded. Quality Control listens to recorded calls to score us...and our managers can and do listen in on live calls, and then give feedback in real time on how they feel the call went. I guess the lesson is that we should always assume that big brother is watching or listening....

@@kc3074 yea, that is just the windows taskbar icon for the microphone. I don't entirely know when or how Windows decides which icons should show up there. You're right that if it's a work computer and you know they monitor it, in general it's just safest to assume they're always listening. HOWEVER, if you're using a desktop computer with an external headset, then I think you should be safe if you just unplug the headset when you're on a break (that doesn't work for a laptop with a built-in mic). The mics on those headsets also need to be really close to your mouth to pick up your voice. So even if you don't unplug it, if you just took it off and put it down on your desk, your voice would probably sound really faint/far away and they might not be able to hear what you're saying.

Someone else linked the account you're referring to in a different comment earlier - I'm pretty sure those videos are fake. Your teacher can't see/hear you JUST through Zoom if you're muted. So either his teacher has other monitoring software installed, or the videos are just fake. There are some suspicious things about the videos - for example, in the one I watched, the chat window isn't visible. He asks a question and then the teacher responds - but he could just be reading a question out loud that someone else asked in the chat, making it look like the teacher is responding to him. It's also suspicious that the other students' cameras are all always off. If he has proven repeatedly that the teacher can see them anyway, why would people continue to bother turning their cameras off?

My guess is that someone asked the same question in the chat and the teacher answered it. The student faked the video to make it look like the teacher heard him even though he's muted.

@@BenFinio there’s more to it than the chat. Not saying it’s real, but he does things the teacher could only see if his video was on, and you can tell it’s not. She can see it as he is doing it and addresses him while he is moving his cursor around his screen to prove he’s not typing. I’d love to understand how this is also fake. I’ve heard that you can pay more as an admin in school to hear and see students. Please debunk this!

Hi. There is currently a very sad case of a missing person in the U.K. A lady (and her dog) was out for a walk in a remote location. She during the walk had to attend the Zoom conference call. She sat down at a public bench and joined the call. Her phone was later found laying on the bench, still dialled in to the zoom call, and the dog was running around nearby. The lady however has vanished, and a 10d search has come up with nothing. The woman is married with 2 little girls, and nobody believes she herself has taken steps to disappear. I was wondering in this day & age, would an iphone (muted on a zoom call) store any audio which could potentially be retrieved, and perhaps give the police something to go by ? The fact that the phone was left on the bench to me do indicate that a perpetrator/abductor who knew what he was doing, and knew just to leave the phone where is was. Kind regards..

this is why I have a desktop pc and not a laptop in my home, desktops don't come with integrated microphone, and I use analog audio setup, so I have full control of what is being sent to the computer, I got a audio switcher with two inputs and two outputs, this isn't professional audio is just consumer audio with 3.5 mm TRS/TRRS connectors, what your computer has. This switch has a mute button in it, so it physically mutes the microphone that you connect in it. there are usb hubs with power switches, if you use those to turn off an usb mic, zoom will get lost and you will probably need to reconfigure the audio settings, which is not nice.

Say it truly depends on who provided the laptop, if it is a school laptop then I recommend being a little more careful with what you do/say. But a lot of schools pre-instal things stuff such as "LanSchool" at least that is what are school would utilize which it can view the users screen and they can take remote control.

Hey! So I use zoom for work, but I have multiple apps running constantly. I use Google voice for calls (headset mic/Bluetooth speaker) and zoom (headset mic/headset audio) and this is so my manager can hear my client and help me if needed. There have been moments where I'm pretty sure they heard me when venting while muted, is that possible? Example: had a whole team meeting about something I happended to say during one vent session and I was "positive" I was muted. The last thing I want to do is act an ass in front of my boss.
