Love this, and a great effort! Paddling whitewater is not easy and you were brave. Shout our to the dutch athletes too!

Thanks! Definitely not easy, but above all: LOADS of FUN! And definitely big shout to the Dutch athletes. Only showcases their incredible fitness and skill. What should we have added to the video according to you? Or maybe for a next video.

Dude! you did great! I work as a kayaking instructor and you're paddling really well for a first timer! Whitewater kayaking is way harder than it looks haha! Thanks for helping bring more awareness to the sport and super awesome for the olympic team to get out there with you!

He looks good for a first timer. He has a lot of stamina swimming so many times. A good paddler, like you, makes it look easy! Hand paddling down the upper nantahala for example.

Thanks so much! Really appreciate you saying this. 100% agree that it was a privilege to spend a day with the Dutch Olympic team on the Olympic course. The introduction to the kayaking was awesome. Will definitely try it again someday.

They were a bit mean giving you that boat, something with a bit more volume like a Pyrhana Machno would have made your life a lot easier
@CuriousMick2 ай бұрын
Appreciate the support💪 Though I did not know better. Super grateful for them to lend out their Kayak Cross boat. Just for understanding, this was 3 weeks out until the start of the Olympic Games. The only boats they had with them were their actual race boats. Imagine that I would destroy their carbon boats (which I, by the way, could also not fit in haha)😟 Do appreciate your support for giving me a better attempt! 🧡💪 What's your favorite event to watch: Canoe Slalom or Kayak Cross?
@azerty363422 ай бұрын
You could have asked the nearby Kayak Clubs. We could have rented an easier Kayak like the Pyrhana Machno.
@tommyyregan2 ай бұрын
I find the pyranha fusions to be more effective but for a first timer you’re probably right. It’s different for everyone.
@davos48862 ай бұрын
No it’s fine for this u need a half slice to make sharper turns. A machno is a tank
@lukasabcdefg5606Ай бұрын
@davos4886 problem with big boats like that are that they forgive to much mistakes in the beginning but once the current becomes to strong you realised that you did not learn the technique properly

1:08 dude, welcome to my world. Kayaks have gotten so much smaller than when I was super active in the sport. Of course riding mt bikes a lot has also made my legs a bit bigger than they used to be 30 years ago! Old school pro tip - never put a pure novice in a small boat unless your looking for entertainment. 😂

Haha yeah. The struggle of tall people now extended beyond airplanes, trains, and cars into Kayak boats

You have no idea how brave you are for doing this. For people that don’t know a weir is a smaller version of this & for me they can be really scary especially if you get stuck. Well done for getting yourself involved, whitewater is the most enthralling experience in canoeing. You should definitely give the canoe sprint a try, it’s much wobblier than whitewater kayaks but the speed is so fun!
@CuriousMick2 ай бұрын
Thanks Tommy. Really appreciate it. The Canoe sprint sounds super interesting. I am definitely going to give it a try. How long have you been canoeing/kayaking yourself?
@tommyyregan2 ай бұрын
@@CuriousMick I’ve been going 3 months and started canoe sprint recently. You can’t sit back and relax in a sprint boat, they are insanely wobbly but once you get going you will enjoy it
@CuriousMick2 ай бұрын
That's awesome dude! Sounds really thrilling. Maybe I'll give it a go - stay tuned!
@lukasabcdefg5606Ай бұрын
At 3:20 that is like the most common mistake beginners make. You have a big ass paddle in you hand but instead you let go of it and try to push with you small hands on the water.
@lukasabcdefg5606Ай бұрын
But apart from that you did pretty good. Everyone makes those mistakes on the beginning and you would probably make great improvements if you were to practise more
@CuriousMickАй бұрын
Thanks Lukas! Definitely room for improvement on all levels 😂 Super keen to try it more often. Where are you usually paddling?

the boat definitely affected the performance, but great job out there🎉 Whitewater ayaking is really not that easy as people think.

Thanks bud! Much appreciate it you saying this 💪 Definitely agree, as this video showcases. For me just going down the END of the kayak course with this much struggle compared to them navigating the actual whitewaters up the course with such grace and elegance shows the athletes' incredible skill. Even going straight on the flat water shows that haha. What was your favorite part in the clip?

I've paddled for about 50 years and done some instruction of beginner/intermediate paddlers. i wouldn't put a paddler in that environment without at least several hours of instruction and 10 hours of experience on whitewater.

I mean it's not like they send him down the whole course.
@CuriousMickАй бұрын
Thank you for your concern @ctcboater, but I have to agree with @lukasabcdefg5606. Had the most elite (if needed) rescue team at all times💪 Lena Teunissen on the side and both Martina Wegman and Joris Otten in their boats at the bottom of the course. Three incredible Olympians - what's better than that?🤘

I dunno. The gingerbread with Tabasco doesn't sound half bad. (Then again, I put Tabasco on lots of things.)
@CuriousMick2 ай бұрын
😂😂 Haha, you may be right. The real punishment was the completely dry gingerbread. I guess the Tabasco and mustard kind of made it less worse. What would be a better punishment food/sauce in your opinion for a potential next video?

@@CuriousMick Anything involving horseradish or a similar condiment might be a place to start.

Haha, it was definitely a challenge, but their large-size carbon boats would have still made it a real struggle. The balance is an impressive skill of these athletes. Thanks for the support for giving me a better attempt though!🧡💪
