RIP: Dan Kelly. There will never be a better Hockey Play-by-Play Man! Thank you for uploading the Dan Kelly version of this game. To me, it was the announcing of Dan Kelly that made this game more memorable, especially the call on the Lemieux Goal you have just seen. That call was Classic, and I still go to tears everytime I hear this call. Especially when I heard this on ESPN. In fact, when Dan Kelly died back in 1989, ESPN played his call on this goal in memorance of him.

Every time I watch this I see something new -- the two USSR players tieing up and falling over at the face-off directly led to the 3-on-1.... and Lemieux's presence of mind to get off the perfect shot. And Danny, god rest your magnificent soul, people don't remember the series as a defensive sham, all they remember is that this is the greatest overall game and greatest three-game series in the history of the sport. Bar none.

Here's a few hockey notes I just recently came across... In the 1988-89 season, Mario Lemieux played 76 games (2 less games then Wayne Gretzky), scored 199 points (31 more points then Gretzky), had 31 more goals then Gretzky, 3 more GW goals, had a much higher +/- ratio (Lemieux's +41 to Waynes +15) and set a single season record of 13 short handed goals (still hasn't been beaten) and yet Gretzky was voted the MVP of that season. I know this happened nearly 25 years ago but still, what the fuck?

I was lucky enough to have a press pass for all the games. What an amazing experience! I'll never forget one of the early games. Lemieux scored 4 goals but Can got clobbered by Russia. At the press conference after no one asked Mario any questions! He sat in silence, then left. I couldn't believe it. I was a cub reporter for my university paper and sat at the back, hockey reporters from around the world packed up front. "Mario, what was it like to score 4 goals against the Russians and lose?"

I am a Canadian who loves hockey and the Canadian national team. That goal - beautiful as it was - should never have happened. Dale Hawerchuk hooked a soviet defenseman and tripped him up giving the two most offensively gifted players of all time some extra room. I know I am going to get flamed but that's ok. And it's not like the Soviets did not use that kind of tactic as well...

It was kinda perfect the way the totals ended. - Gretzky and Lemieux were 1-2 in tournament scoring - Gretzky had the most assists and points - Lemieux had the most goals, more than a goal per game - The tournament all-stars were composed solely of Canadian and Russian players - The forwards were Gretzky, Lemieux and a member of the KLM line (Krutov) - The defencemen were Fetisov and Bourque, probably the best defensemen of the 80s - The goalie was from the winning team (Fuhr)

I'm not sure if it would get anywhere close, but the 2002 Canadian Olympic team was pretty freaking stacked. Yzerman, Lemieux, Sakic, Broduer, Shannahan, Kariya, Iginla, Nieds, Pronger, etc. I think all of those guys are Hall of Fame candidates.

European players came into the NHL early in the 1970's, they were just few and far between. You see so many more players in the NHL today from Russia, Sweden, Finland, the Czech Republic, Slovokia and other countries. The NHL is all the better because now you have broadened the talent pool.

I am a Czech and I also agree that it was the best hockey. Canada as well as USA had a disadvantage,because they had no longterm -built natinal hockey teams composed of the best players at those times like USSR,CZE,Swedes and others.They only put together few weeks before tournament and made some pre-tournament matches and went to play this excellent hockey.Of course, they also sometimes missed the decisive game like in CanadaCup81 and ChallegeCup1979 ,but it does not matter.

@danielkol17 жыл бұрын
The reason for Canada's "shortcomings" in international play does not have to do with talent level, but the fact that these players are bred in a system where they rarely play with one another (unlike the scenario in Europe). Canadians have less than two weeks to prepare for tournaments and establish a sense of "team play".

@RigaFraction There were three of the greatest centres ever to play the game on the ice for Canada, Gretzky, Lemieux and Hawerchuk. Hawerchuk never gets any credit but he was in the faceoff circle because he was the best draw man and he proved it. Hawerchuk was just unfortunate that he had to play his entire career in the shadow of Gretzky. Three great players = one of Canada's best moments in hockey.

@lordraven1980 No. Every single game close, every single game decided by a split second. These were two of the most closely matched teams of all time. I could not believe how good the hockey was. Don't diminish the accomplishment of either team in that series. It's one reason why I, unlike most Canadians, will always prefer to watch a Canada-Russia game over a Canada-US game. Such great memories, and hopes they will be repeated. The gold game in 2010 came closest. Excellent game.
