CCCP vs CANADA were the best and most exhilarating hockey ever played. I loved watching the Soviets beautiful style of play. They had a great team. (Best ever?) A better team than Canada imo. Team Canada was together for 4 weeks only at that point, a great disadvantage if compared to the Soviets team which had been playing together for years. Team Canada needed that home cooking from the Crowd and the referees to even things out. All fair to me. The difference was the Soviets didn’t know yet about Mario Lemieux. Otherwise they win the tournamen

@Les Moore To be honesty , the draw would be the most fair result of these games . Both sides showed it's super skills , neither one of them has no overwhelming superiority over the other side . Makarov and Krutov are the same great players , as Gretzky and Lemieux , Fetisov and Kasatonov are not lesser bit great , than Burke and Coffey etc . So , if it would be possible , l would proclame winners both sides equally .

@Les Moore Fetisov is same great defencer , as Bobby Orr ; I will told you just one example - not only the NHL have All Star Six , it practices also in other countries , and surely at World Championships , although this competition mean almost nothing , for NHL fans and spectators - so for Fetisov , during just ten years was simply guaranted place at World Championships All Star Six , and at Soviet Union All Star Six ; the same was with Makarov , and just some lesser - with Krutov and Kasatonov . This is results of great players , isn't it ?

Здесь видим красоту, а вся грязь вырезана. Этот матч в эпоху Горбачева был сломан откровенно бесчестным подсуживанием Канаде. За нарушение против СССР удаляли игрока СССР. Такая была установка судей. Есть канадский ролик на этот счёт. Тренер Тихонов повел себя как предатель, соглашаясь на такое судейство. Видимо корона заслоняла здравый смысл и порядочности не хватило. А вот наши спортсмены выше всяких похвал. Гол Каменского и обводка Макарова с последующим голом Крутова бесценны своей красотой.

It's all relative. The best Russian team ever was Anatoli Tarasov's squad. Petrov, Firsov, Charlamov, Michajlov and others on that team were at least 2 decades ahead of the rest, Canada included. I look at the teams level by how superior they were in comparison with their contemporaries. That's not to say this series wasn't fantastic. I am just a bit surprised to see in retrospect how bad skaters Canadians actually were at the time. However, their improvisational IQ was off the charts. And of course, one cannot miss their will not to loose. That is their trademark. Tough as nails and really nasty when needed. I used to hate the nasty element but now I do like it. But I will never forget the brutality they employed against Russia in the series decade earlier. That was sheer brutality and it had no place in such great sport that hockey is

@@swampfolk2526 I had to shake off my Russian language rust in order to read your comment and understand it. You might be right, there were more Russian squads that were phenomenal. I, however, prefer the Tarasov's team because of how long they absolutely dominated the rest of the world and how tactically well they were prepared. The only team they had consistently a bit of difficulties against were Czechoslovakian team and it was only because they were able to break the Russian flow of their game (plus CSSR had an excellent team as well in those years). Yes, the teams you have mentioned were also fantastic but they were more evenly matched by others even though they were winning most of their games. Who and when they were best is a highly subjective opinion as we will never be able to put one generation of players against the other. As the hockey gear got more sophisticated from skates all the way through the helmets and sticks, of course it will look like the later generation are better. Like I said, I always look at the dominance level and just by that indicator, I would say that the Petrov, Firsov teams were probably the best in the history of the game. I consider Russian players in general best players overall due to their superior skating skills even by today standard, their technical skills and most of all, their ice vision. Many will argue and disagree with me and I respect that. However, I am not a Russian and I don't suffer from the nationality complex issue and any form of prejudice. I just look at the game itself that is based on my knowledge of it and I go from there.

If you look at these games completely you'll see it is embarrassing how many fouls, bad ones are simply not noted at all. Pretty sad to see. In reality the Russians were the better team and with quite a gap in my view. Pure handling and skating skills of most was in a league of its own.

Krutov, Makarov, Fetisov ... Gretzky, Lemieux, Coffey, etc. This was the greatest hockey ever played before the Russians started joining the NHL. This particular game was probably the best hockey ever. The first period was just crazy. Today's players are faster and the game is faster but this game was incredible. After Canada won to force game 3 I just had to get tickets. Game 3 which ended with another Gretzky to Lemieux goal was my best ever sports fan experience.

Помню сентябрь 87 мы с младшим братом студенты и как раз в глухой деревне на уборке свёклы а тут эта игра, пришлось на просится к местному мужику, совершенно незнакомому, посмотреть телевизор (как раз футбол ещё был в этот вечер Динамо Киев и шотландский Ренджерс помоему 1 1 сыграли) но хоккей конечно был огонь, 33 года прошло а чувство горечи до сих пор не ушло, как и после футбольного матча СССР Бельгия 86года

Канадцы победили (и всегда побеждали) только за счёт угроз, драк, грубости, нарушений правил и конечно же при помощи своих арбитров. Всё это видно на любом видео. Другое дело, когда все люди в Северной Америке считают грубость, угрозы и драки на льду нормальным явлением, а игру в хоккей по правилам скучными покатушками. Это они превратили игру хоккей в борьбу без правил. Такой у них весь спорт, культура и всё остальное. Это люди, для которых шоу важнее спорта. Самый настоящий спорт был только в СССР. Это факт.

poiu7777uiop, Совершенно верно, надо даже больше развить эту мысль. Заокеанские партнеры, совершенно все превратили в шоу, где главное это деньги и их личные интересы. А где главное деньги, все остальное превращается в некий "спектакль", "фарс". Любое спортивное мероприятие, наши партнеры давно рассматривают не как спорт, а как шоу, где они могут писать сценарий. Началось все с "лунной аферы", когда СССР не стал разоблачать их, видимо получив финансовый откат. Затем это перешло в спорт, серия 72-го показала, как и на что готовы они пойти ради сохранения имиджа и финансового положения НХЛ. А после распада СССР и говорить то нечего. Медали добывают через суды ))) причем через свои суды )))

Это страшный мир, который прикрывается красивой обёрткой. Весь капитализм это мыльный пузырь в красивой оболочке. Главный секрет их благополучия это бесконтрольное печатание зелёной валюты, в обмен на мировые ресурсы. Они как бы открыли средневековый секрет философского камня в... обычной зелёной бумаге. Очень трудно и затратно было конкурировать СССР, а потом и России с откровенными мировыми мошенниками. Эту недобросовестную конкуренцию с западом чувствовал на себе каждый советский человек. Вот сегодня главная задача России, снять эту зависимость с мировых государств и тогда будем посмотреть что они могут, когда наступить честная конкуренция.

The greatest 3 game series I have ever watched. The fact neither teams players played against each other week in week out made it all the more special. I completely respect Canada winning but I feel the Soviet's were more silky and easy on the eye. I played with and against a good few ex NHL players but the greatest player I ever played with and against came from the Soviet League in the 80's, Oleg Sinkov (Dynamo Kiev in the 80's/early 90's). His skill level was so far ahead of the ex NHL players I played against.

Я тогда учился в техникуме, прямых трансляций не было, результат матча можно было узнать только в утренних новостях. Но если дождаться спортивных новостей, то я опаздывал к началу занятий, что влекло за собой некоторые санкции. Группа делегировала меня опаздывать, но узнавать результат матча. Так получилось, что все три раза попадался Немецкий. В первый раз забегаю в аудиторию сообщаю 6:5 Выиграли! Немка отправляет в учебную часть. Второй раз захожу, немка: Какой счет? 5:6 проиграли, она: Иди в учебную часть. Третий раз захожу, немка: Какой счет? 5:6 проиграли. Она: Иди садись.

Have the 3 game final series on DVD. Some amazing hockey from both teams. Makarov and Krutov were magical. Their incredible play was ultimately eclipsed by Gretzky and Lemieux (this was where he went from star player to superstar and learned enough to help Pittsburgh win back to back Cups).

No it wasn't. It was the refereeing that was so partisan it was a huge embarrassament and for every unbiased viewer, like we here in Europe, was easy to see. In reality or at lewast how we saw things (well...most of us) is that the KLM outclassed all the others which includes Gretzky, Lemieux, Messier etc.

@@Serenoj69, the KLM line wasn’t as effective and they played together for the entire YEAR. They had been together FOR years. Gretzky and Lemieux had more points than Krutov and Makarov, and Igor was largely a non-entity the entire final series. While Larionov had the best NHL career by far, he was the only one who had a GM and coach (Scotty Bowman) who knew how to utilize his talents. Look at how Sergei and Vladimir were misused everywhere they played…yet Makarov still had a respectable time in the NHL. Was the officiating biased? It sure seemed to be fair for the games Koharski was the ref. He was chosen by Tikhonov because Viktor said Don was unbiased. Did the Canadian team get away with things? Absolutely. Some things made me cringe back then, even during the Cold War. However, both teams were guilty of infractions that weren’t called. My biggest issue is that Dale Hawerchuk got away with a hook on the final goal…although it likely didn’t factor into the actual goal. Still, it WAS a foul and should have been called. If you want to talk biased officiating, go watch the 4 games in Russia from the 1972 Summit Series. That was so obviously meant to give the Sovs the win, yet they lost the final 3 games 6-5 to a Canadian team who wouldn’t give up even faced with a rigged game.

@@elijahrobinson2362 First of all: I realise this is a lot of text. Sorry for that but it seems I can't write this in fewer words. English is not my native tongue... It doesn't matter too much who was asked to do what, it does matter how it all went in reality. As I said: it was not only that I saw it, over here in Europe we saw it vastly different. Now Cold Wars were nice and fine on the North American continent but not so much on the European one where I live. To show you the sentiment over here back then: The Soviet Red team had a match in The NEtherlands in 1978. A very heavy blizzard set in and the players could not get back to their home. Trains could not go any further, all cars were over compeltely covered by snow in a matter of an hour. I remember that as a kid very well btw since such a blizzard is a once in a ten year event. So they asked the Soviets (who had a bus) if some Dutch players could take a hike. However: at least of couple of Dutch did not want to be anywhere near the Soviet players because they were "Commie bastards". Since they had no other option the coach told the press he had to really talk with these players to change their minds and they did. To show them they were free, one of them bought beer and cigarettes even though he did not smoke! Just to show those commies what it meant to be a free person... The bus got stuck, temp dropped to -15 C and what started off as something they laughed about quickly became life threatening. Tretjak said: "Ät some point we started to talk about what the headlines would be about us freezing to death here. Because we were stuck in the middle of nowhere, with zero visibility and their was a real chance of all of us freezing to death" The atmosphere was fantastic among all people. Russian had big fur hats and coat,s and they embraced the Dutch to keep warm. The coach, Hans Westberg, said "we finally realised they were humans, just like us!" That is a funny and lengthy anecdote about how many (not me) thought about the SU, not just our players. Fins think like that too, Swedes also (our coach had a Dutch name but he was 100% Swedish). So with all that in mind, we all saw what we saw and found the 1987 series very biased in favour of the Canadians. So the scoring etc, also individually, was affected as well. It is for a reason why in the Team of the Century many Russians were elected: Tretjak, Fetisov (who had by far the most votes), Makarov, Salming, Kharlamov, Gretzky. I very much agree with that line up. Indeed I noticed immediately the hooking against the Russian and of course it did matter: he was toe to toe with Lemieux. You can see that. It is precisely why he was hooked. the Canadian saw that too. Also in a Dutch documentary on the Miracle on Ice, various Dutch Canadians were interviewed as well as Tretjak. The Dutch Canadians were explicit on how good the Soviets were "They were the best team in the 80s period. They were considerd unbeatable. Even Canadian pro's basically had no chance of beaten them. They practised more than 1000 hours per year, way more than others. On pics you can see some of us standing next to them. We were a lot taller, but they were much better trained, Faster, stronger, more skilled.....ny god...the sheer talent!" I know it is not quite correct, but it is clear these pro's considered them the best team. And they were born out of Dutch parents but in Canada and raised there too. Another anecdote that has little to do with this subject is that Tretjak also elaborate on him getting sent off by Tikhonov at 2-2 "Sure it was my mistake, but I was never sent of at 2-2. I in fact wanted to quit playing altogehter after he did that. Why he did it, I still don't know. He never explained himself. And he took that secret with him into his grave." If you are into icehockey this might be funny to know. In The Netherlands we thought exchanging Tretjak for Myshkin (?) was a pivotal point in the match where the Soviets finally lost 4-3. So in short: the Soviet Union is much more a threat to us than it is to Canada or the USA. So most over here were not fond of them (not me though, I liked them) and surely our commentators were really really pro American. It is a well known fact. But even he noted very strange decisions mainly aganst the Soviets.

@@Serenoj69, the Soviet team played together for years. This Canadian team practiced together for a couple of weeks, then had to learn to play together in a tournament. And they still beat a team that had played together for years. Just like in 1972 (when some of the best weren’t available because they were in the WHA Bobby Hull or hurt Bobby Orr). All century team isn’t really that meaningful since many goaltenders were equal to or better than Tretiak, many D men were better than Fetisov and Salming didn’t belong there at all. Makarov and Kharlamov? Yes. But choosing them over Lemieux, Howe, Richard, et cetera shows the bias and origin of the voters. The Russians who did well in the NHL were coached by the greatest coach of all time: Scotty Bowman. Part of 3 dynasties. Those Russians all we’re PART of a team that had their core among Canadian players (skaters and goalies) and coaches. Put the very best Russians, who played together for years, paid by their nation, against a mix of Canadians who had 2 weeks to practice and the Canadians still won. That says it all.

Канадцы какие только турниры не придумывали,чтобы доказать своё превосходство над СССР и практически везде терпели фиаско. Выигрывали засчет грубости и судей - на этом построен их мирок, правила меняют под себя по ходу матча.

@@markalex5136 Не поленился и посмотрел "компоты" первой суперсерии. В канадской ее части работали американские арбитры, в московской - чех, швед и немец. Тут можно говорить о нейтралитете. Прекрасно помню, что на многих матчах наших за океаном работал Юрий Карандин из Новосибирска. Наши при нем, бывало, и проигрывали. А про американца Кохарски я уже сказал, но и он формально был нейтрален. Кстати, после 1981 года в Кубок Канады был возвращен формат из трех матчей. Но канадцы - организаторы, им и флаг в руки относительно регламента. Непонятно только, почему подобные турниры не проходили у нас. Может, у вас есть информация? Просто я понял, что ваш отец был не последним человеком в руководстве советского хоккея. Заранее спасибо.

Это была жуткая заруба, наверное лучшая в мировом хоккее. Только задумайтесь Гретцки и Лемье в одном звене. Смотрите и наслаждайтесь. Лучшего хоккея не было. В трех матчах было 2 овертайма, потом Гретцки в интервью сказал: Третьего овертайма мой организм просто не выдержал бы. Тогда я учился в техникуме (колледж по новомодному), советское телевидение не показывало прямых трансляций, но давало результат матча в утренних новостях, но если прослушать новости, то я опаздывал на занятия. Вся группа делегировала опаздывать, но сообщать результат матча. Удивительно, но все три раза я попадал на немецкий. 1й матч, врываюсь в аудиторию кричу пацанам 6:5 выиграли, немка тут же отправила за допуском на занятия. 2 матч, врываюсь в аудиторию немка: Ну? 5:6 проиграли. Иди за допуском. 3 матч! Вхожу в аудиторию, немка: Как? - 5:6 проиграли. Иди садись.

I as watching this as a kind,now I realized that young Evgeny Belosheykin(God rest his soul)was a good,talented player,but not near Vladislav Tretyak,not even 60% of him,with all my respect to incredible Canadian Team, it was the main reason they lost in this superb,historic series ,Wayne,Mario and others Canadian greats against Sergey Makarov,Slava Fetisov and company,mamma Mia!Doubt we will ever seen this amount of talents accumulated. This stuff is better than a soccer World Cup final.

Good post. I didn't see the Soviet teams of the 1980s back then, so when I watched this Canada Cup series on DVD a few things stood out to me: (1) goaltending was one of the few areas of the game where Canada was clearly dominant, (2) I was really surprised to see how strong the smaller Soviet player were (Krutov could muscle even the biggest Canadian defensemen off the puck consistently), and (3) I never knew how good Kasatonov was, since Fetisov was the one who seemed to get most of the attention.

Анд Дуд Эти сволочи считали себя выше других, и потому проигрывая начинали повально нарушать правила, при полном игнорировании канадских арбитров. По сути, на стороне канадских игроков были и арбитры, которые закрывали глаза на грубости и гадости канадцев, и весь стадион зрителей. На западе всё поставлено на победу и потому там уже нет спорта, а есть шоу по зарабатыванию бабла. А где бабло, там умирает всё. Для Канады выиграть у самой сильной сборной мира, сборной СССР, это великое событие. Потому и радость такая. Вся Канада торжествует.
