Canada will have to decide between its target for 100% ZEV sales by 2035, and following the US lead on putting tariffs on Chinese EVs, says Ian Lee, management professor at the Sprott School of Business, Carleton University.

Don't Tariffs and Import Taxes inflate prices? Didn't the Bank of Canada increase interest rate to combat inflation?? Canadians NEED choices AND affordable products/services!! The US is a military super-power (military spending is bigger then the next 10 countries combined), so you buy weapons from them... The Chinese is a manufacturing super-power (manufacturing capacity is bigger then the next 10 countries combined), so you buy goods from them...

I know the Chinese can wipe out the Canadian Auto Industry.. but, having every Canadian able to access $10,000 brand new EVs would be such an automotive game changer. Canada wants to electrify the transportation industry, these prices would electrify the transportation industry very quickly. Rather than $50,000+ Teslas, we could be buying brand new cars for $14,000.

@@jack99889988 The difference between the foreign brands in Canada, and the Chinese is that the foreign brands in Canada employ Canadians. The Chinese can only build the EVs for 10k because they are built in China, within an ecosystem of cheap input materials and cheap labor. If Canada took the blueprints and tried to build the car here, it would end up costing 50k. So there will be no automotive jobs in Canada if we decide to import the low cost Chinese cars. And, I think I would be ok with that, if not for China being a communist nation who might go to war with us in the future.

@@jack99889988 BYD cannot build a $10,000 EV in Canada. Canada has no cost advantage. If they built the car here it would cost $50,000. China has a competitive advantage because: low labor cost, low/subsidized electricity, low material costs. Canada has none of these advantages, so if the cars were built here, they would be failures. Canada needs to build out its mining sector and refining sector to provide low and abundant input materials. Canada needs to build out it's electrical grid and supply to drop costs and support EV uptake. Canada also has to build out its road/rail/pipeline network to better facilitate the transport of goods on time and at low cost. And there is nothing to be done about labor costs, those will always be higher, unless the nation fails. Canada can't build out road/rail/pipeline/mines, because most land is owned by native groups and it takes 10+ years to negotiate anything. Canada's federal government is no better, any project is tied up in environmental assessments for 10+ years.

It's not a difficult decision at all. A significant portion of Canada's economy and federal revenue is dependent on our domestic automotive industry. The only reason these vehicles are $10,000 is because they are being sold below the cost of production in the west - it's called dumping and is illegal. If you were foolish enough to buy a chinese EV then what you will find out quickly is that they will break down frequently and repairs (now that you own the vehicle) will cost more than the new vehicle. China's strategy is the same as printer manufacturers who sold their inkjet printers below cost because they made an enormous profit on ink cartridges. But if the economic reasons don't convince you then consider human rights violations (Uyghur genocide), military aggression towards all of their neighbours, the use of North Korean slaves, child labour in their African mines, illegal trade practices, global environment destruction (China produces more carbon (13+ trililion tonnes) than all the g20 nations combined from their 3000+ coal fired generating stations, which increases annually by the same amount of carbon that Canada produces annually (500 billion tonnes per year))
