I am from the Netherlands, and dont want to live in the USA or in Canada, cost of living and rent is global, but in the Netherlands there are not so much homeless people, and we have a good social safety net. If necessary we dont need a car, we can bike or take public transport that is very good.

@carbonatedturtle As an Indian who came to Canada to pursue my master’s degree, I was drawn not only by the opportunity for academic growth but also by the values Canadians stand for-diversity, inclusivity, and a strong sense of community. However, I had to leave Canada due to the challenging state the country is currently in, partly caused by some of my countrymen who have, unfortunately, taken advantage of the genuine kindness of Canadians. Their modus operandi is consistent with their behavior back in India as well, and I want to assure you that these individuals do not represent the true spirit of our country. I would have genuinely loved to stay and learn from the authentic values and culture of true Canadians. From the meaningful interactions I had during my time there, I truly believe I could have thrived and contributed positively to society, whether through meaningful work or business leveraging my expertise. I sincerely hope that one day Canada regains the stability and values it was once known for. Fun fact: I used to live in Downtown, which is depicted in this video. 🙂🫡

Are you surprised? Canada has voted neoliberal conservative for our entire history, federally. Over 150 years of Lib-Con governance. All supporting the capitalist world order. Better affordable housing, improved healthcare and self-reliant communities aren't part of the capitalist incentives. Well-being is a cost often not worth it for big companies to maximize their profit. Canada has a lot of waking up to do. Maybe start in 2025 with a New Year's ReVOLUTION. See Revolution Now podcast with Peter Joseph. Go from there.

@@user-kk4mh2wf5s Politicians don't fix problems, they never have, never will. Only an organized, educated, activated citizenry with well-being and people-centered demands can pressure the government to do better and build a better economic system beyond capitalism. But if me just saying 'capitalism' triggers you and you can't think straight, this is part of the problem. People can't even be told the truth and what to do about it. It's so sad. I mean, some people can, but the masses have problems with it. I can suggest watching "A Viable Society" talk by Peter Joseph on TZM channel, and you can learn a lot and get motivated to help. But nobody can be forced to learn.

I work as a firearms instructor, and it’s a significant part of my life. Given the nature of my profession, it’s understandable that I have strong opinions about our military's role in global security. If it weren’t for the dedication and sacrifices made by veterans, we might find ourselves dealing with threats from adversaries, such as Russia, who might otherwise seek to expand their influence. The reality is that our way of life-where we can freely communicate and share our thoughts in English-would be at risk. So, the next time you encounter a military veteran, take a moment to express your gratitude for their service and the protection they provide for our freedoms. Their commitment is crucial to maintaining our security and way of life

I met with many people who somehow came here without any efforts and quality checks. What a mess! When I was a sophomore, I took a year off and went to Canada to study English. It was during 1995~1996. Canada back then was like, one of those countries where you can find peace of mind. I literally loved[and still do] everything about Canada. People were very very friendly and it was super safe and the whole country is so beautiful that you cannot describe it properly with human language. It's quite sad to witness today's Canada is not what it used to be. But I'm optimistic at the same time. The Canadians I know have the ability and will to solve any problems. Don't be so willing to believe everything a yuppie stock broker tells you, a guy driving a fancy car who probably also lives in one of those fancy high rises or a million dollar mega box house. The guy lives in Hull/Gatineau, Quebec that has never been and never will be a part of Ottawa, an area that historically was always a gritty working class industrial city, that has only grown in recent years due to cheaper rents on that side of the river that has seen rapid development outpace what a small tax base city can keep up with in the way of modernised infrastructure and roads. And it is also a fact that the Municipality of West Quebec has traditionally been ignored my the fat cats in Quebec City who control provincial purse strings. As for Ottawa, all areas this guy put on display have histories of being lower working class neighbourhoods back to the 19th century including the Byward Market that was where prostitution thrived for over a hundred years up to the 2000s, and Lowertown next door is where The Mission and Salvation Army homeless shelters have been located going back to the early and mid-20th century. So these areas have always had social problems that have only increased with the fentanyl crisis plaguing cities worldwide and not unique to Canada.

I moved to Taiwan and lived there from 1999 to 2013. Taiwan expanded roads, built bridges, built new hospitals.... the city constantly changes, as they use the tax money to improve quality of living. I've been back in Vancouver from 2013 to 2025. Canada still looks the same, except roads are falling apart, trash between Vancouver and Richmond on the side of the highways, quality of apartments look visibly worse in quality. It's terrible here, and I plan to live in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan in a couple years. Canadians don't fight for their own country because there's so much diversity that no one comes together to protect it. Canada is now always someone else's problem. A sense of pride is gone. No one wants to hold the politicians accountable, unlike in Taiwan, for example. A former president was sentence to prison for many years, and today, another former president is on trial facing up to 25 years. There's more democracy outside of Canada

The thought of going back to Vancouver, where garbage and drug use was rampant and where your taxes seem to just pay for useless public servant wages and nothing else was so depressing I moved to the Okanagan. Unfortunately, it's just as bad here. Canadians are getting ripped off everywhere they turn it seems. The NDP 'tards in Victoria just lined their pockets some more the other day. I live in Niagara Falls. It was such a great city 9 or 10 years ago. Now it's unrecognizable. They've allowed thousands of immigrants/illegals to come here, but as you mentioned, they have done nothing to improve our services. A lot of roads, service centre's & schools have not been built or upgraded to handle the huge influx of people. Our hospital & medical Clinics are overwhelmed. There are no affordable places to live. No apartments or houses that average people could afford, especially with the lack of employment opportunities. Every month more of the population here are evicted & end up out on the street. Canadian citizens get dumped into the street while immigrants occupy hotels & motels. Paid for by Canadian tax $$. It's a nightmare. Crime is rising daily. A man from Buffalo posted on X that he'd come here for a visit & was shocked to see how it had changed. He said he couldn't believe it was Canada. He thought he was in India or Pakistan. Then he said he couldn't wait to go home. So this can't be good for tourism. What Niagara Falls is known for really. I hope something is done soon to get some of what we've lost here back. It's sad.

New brunswick here. The housing crisis is really bad here, houses are either owned by out of province buyers or extremely expensive. Houses that cost 30k in late 90's early 2000's now cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. I've seen small regular houses go for 300k+. The city is building apartments for either the elderly or immigrants. Not a lot of options for young canadians. The income divide is very clear now, there is a very different crowd in loblaws vs iga for example. I work in retail and the food bank guy used to come once a month, now it's 3 times a week. Theft is skyrocketing, even in my small town. Drugs and homelessness is out of control, something we've never seen before here. About the cannabis/vape stores: the most shocking example is the native reserve about 30 mins from here. There used to be all sorts of nice mom and pop shops in there. Now it's ALL weed shops.

How Canada's governments are quietly killing people off that are disabled and poor! (Unseen by the mass public) Canada's treatment of its disabled population raises serious concerns, as many individuals in need of support find themselves in dire situations. Those who rely on disability benefits receive significantly less each month than what they require for housing. For instance, a disabled person in Ontario typically earns around $1,300 a month, while the cost of renting even a modest room can range from $1,500 to $2,000. This financial disparity often forces individuals onto the streets, leading to a loss of disability eligibility due to the lack of a permanent address-even for those who have contributed to the system. Compounding the issue is a program called Portable Housing Benefit, which, while it may appear beneficial at first glance, is more of a public relations maneuver aimed at creating the illusion that the government is actively addressing homelessness and housing affordability. In reality, this joint Federal and Provincial initiative misleads the public by claiming to help low-income individuals secure housing costs at only 30% of their monthly income. This assertion is misleading, as calculations often fail to reflect the true rental costs experienced by participants. Rather than being based on an individual's actual rent, the 30% figure used by the program is calculated from 80% of the lowest comparable rent in the city/area. This means that recipients may find themselves paying closer to 80-85% of their rent, contrary to the misleading expectation of only 30% that the program presents to the public and those in need to reduce the housing waiting list numbers. This deceptive aspect of the program exacerbates homelessness instead of providing relief. Furthermore, eligibility for the program is limited to individuals receiving disability benefits and those who are on a housing waiting list. Many vulnerable individuals are misled into enrolling in the program just before they are about to be offered available housing units, resulting in unrealistic hopes and further complicating their situations. Once enrolled, these individuals often receive only a small amount of support-perhaps $200-toward their rent, when they had anticipated more substantial assistance like $500 off their monthly rent of $1,500. Importantly, signing up for the program also results in their removal from the housing waiting list, effectively reducing the visible number of people awaiting affordable housing. This tactic allows the government to boast about declining waiting list numbers and faster average wait times, without disclosing that they are using the PHB program to remove long-standing applicants from the list under misleading pretenses. The situation grows even graver when, after a few years, many participants find themselves facing "renovictions," where landlords claim they need to vacate units for renovations, often superficial fixes like paint and new flooring. Once evicted, these individuals struggle to locate affordable housing, often ending up homeless and living in tents, further exacerbating their plight. The lack of a permanent address subsequently jeopardizes their disability benefits, effectively trapping them in a cycle of poverty and homelessness. The design of this government program has dire consequences, quietly contributing to the suffering and even death of vulnerable individuals-many of whom may succumb to hypothermia or other hardships-while the public remains largely unaware of the grim realities behind these policies. In conclusion, many people overlook the fact that a significant number of elected officials in Canada's federal and provincial governments have a vested interest in maintaining the ongoing housing crisis. Many of these officials hold substantial investments in Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) through their registered retirement savings plans (RRSPs) and other financial portfolios. As long as the housing issue persists, rental prices will remain elevated, allowing these officials to enjoy returns on their investments ranging from 8% to 20% annually. Consequently, there is little incentive for them to resolve the homelessness problem, as doing so would undermine their personal financial interests. This creates a troubling scenario where political leaders may prefer to keep the status quo rather than actively work toward sustainable solutions.

Hi Griffin, I've lived in London, Ontario my entire life (27 years old) and I remember when our country didn't feel like this even with a city that has struggled like London has. This video should be essential viewing for EVERY person who even thinks of moving here. Almost every single street in my city has encampments and homeless on it now. I found people sleeping in sleeping bags in my apartment's private parking lot recently. Never had that in the entire 6 years I've lived in this building. We've seen many, many businesses leave London due to the increase in violence and poverty (PLEASE google why The Budapest Restaurant closed. They are a very typical London story) and now, 98% of business only hire immigrants and refuse to even consider looking at Canadian born youth. Many straight up say don't apply if you don't speak Punjabi. Many apartments are now saying to not apply if you're not from certain Castes or from certain Indian villages. It's disgusting what has happened to this country. I wish our government cared.

I used to be a productive member of Canadian society I worked my whole life up until I got sick. My issue is with the Canadian healthcare system. Unless what you are sick with is very easily determined then you get to look forward to years of tests and waiting for specialists only to possible still find out absolutely nothing, in the meantime your health continues to just get worse and worse. I just want to be able to live a somewhat normal life again, if my health stopped going downhill and actually just got 25% to 50% better I would be so happy and would be able to work again. My parents are both retired and my mother is fighting cancer and my father has heart issues and their doctor retired two years ago and they both still do not have a new family doctor yet. Myself I went without a family doctor for over 15 years and when the list I was put on to wait for a family doctor found someone, it was a nurse practitioner and not a doctor. I would have no issue with the nurse practitioner if they followed their own waiting list rules. The one rule that concerns me is that if you getting assigned a nurse practitioner and accept them, they are meant to be a place holder u til they find you a replacement family doctor. Well I guess that rules does not apply to me because as soon as I was assigned that nurse practitioner my name was removed from that list… The healthcare system is a joke because there are way too many patients and not enough medical staff. This is where my one main concern with the unregulated immigration comes in. If we already cannot treat our current population numbers with the current healthcare system m, how will adding 1 million more people to that system help? The simple answer is that things will get a lot worse than they are now because the government doesn’t put any funds toward the Canadian healthcare system. Actually in the last few decades all that politicians have done is remove funding from the Canadian healthcare system… I do not feel like my tax dollars are being used properly, especially when I can go to my local ER and wait for two days before seeing a doctor. In fact a young mother died while waiting to see a doctor in that same ER… Cheers I guess… Like I said, I just want to be able to work again, ai have never had to rely on social assistance before and I am extremely ashamed that I have had to now because of my undiagnosed illness. P.S. The other issue I am well aware of is that people on disability like me and veterans on social assistance as well are luck if they get between 900 to 1200 CAD a month. In the meantime immigrants that have not been here long enough to contribute anything to our country are getting that amount daily or really dam close to it. The amount I am getting every month is not enough to live on. If I didn’t have a supportive family, I would have been in trouble.

I live in Guelph Ontario. It is one of the most expensive cities in Canada. A basic one bedroom apartment is around 2000 dollars a month. I am a senior on pension. I pay 1000 dollars per month to rent a single room in a private home. I share a bathroom and kitchen with the homeowners. I receive 1300 per month in pension, 200 dollars goes to income tax. So I live on my savings. When they are gone, I may have to resort to medical suicide. When I was first married, we had 2 small incomes, but we still managed to buy a small home. Canada is indeed broken. I would not recommend anyone to move here. We have so many homeless here, It is so sad. I don't think anyone knows what to do. Was thinking about rural, but then we'd have to deal with all the meth labs and meth-heads and white nationalists, etc. It's like THERE'S NO SAFE PLACE ANYMORE. I spent 3 years digging holes, hammering stakes and flagging ribbon. My mental health and confidence were in the toilet. Finding work in Alberta in 2019 was extremely hard because of an oil recession. Thank God I moved to France. Finding work as a tradesman in France is a cakewalk. The government spends boatloads of money on infrastructure. There's so much construction going on. I learned more working for 3 months in France than 3 years in Canada. Just happened on this video. I left Canada for California years ago and was flabbergasted to see the Capital of Canada in such a mess. I thought this was strictly an American city problem with homelessness, empty store fronts and businesses that are open are pay day loans, check cashing, dollar stores etc. What a pity.

What's your suggestion for making it better? Vote for Conservatives? Has that ever fixed the problems? Has voting for a new PM ever made things better, systemically? Not that I can tell. The Greatest Canadian was voted on a while back and it was Tommy Douglas of the NDP who helped get Medicare for All passed in the 1960s, but he wasn't PM and he wasn't even the official opposition party. Maybe capitalism isn't all it is cracked up to be? Maybe a system based on profit maximization and infinite growth at the expense of the ecosystem and human well-being isn't what we should be striving for? Maybe we need a new direction? If you think so, why not find out about "A Viable Society" as described by Peter Joseph on TZM official channel. Isn't that a better way?

I am in my early 60s and retired at 53. Lots of people gave me pushback because they had difficulty grasping the concept of not working if you don’t have to. I looked at my life as stages. I earned everything I have now through a lot of hard work, but I owe it to myself to “stop and smell the roses” in my final stage of life. In my case I left the country after I retired and live in Latin America. It allowed me to get away from all the negative things happening in America while appreciating my new environment. I have yet to meet anyone who regrets retirement.

Nice way to retire. For me, I believe retirees who struggle to meet their basic needs are the ones who could not accumulate enough money during their active years to meet their needs. Retirement choices determine a lot of things. My wife and I has spent same number of years in the civil service, she is investing through a wealth manager and myself through the 401k. We both still earning towards having our retirement.

It's unfortunate most people don't have such information. I don't really blame people who panic. Lack of information can be a big hurdle. I've been making more than $1,000,000 by investing through an advisor, and I don't have to do much work. Doesn't matter if the economy is misbehaving; great wealth managers will always make returns.

So sad 😢 to see Canada like this, I live in the Windsor Ontario area, it doesn't look so bad as in Ottawa but it's getting there quickly, after my divorce in 2016 it started to be impossible for me to live with just one income without getting in heavy death.. I was forced to sell my house to some newcomers in Canada which for sure will be for 2 or 3 families living there, gladly I sold the house for a great profit 🎉, which gives me the chance to live in Mexico with a very affordable cost of living.. I work seasonal now in Canada for summer time, and take the best of both worlds.

Hi Griffin, I think with this video your narrative felt more interactive and it is clearly depicting what the current situation is like in Ottawa. It's funny because I am from Montreal and went to Ottawa last weekend and while touring the Byward Market, I felt a bit unsafe with the homeless drinking around and it was actually early like 9-10 am. Anyway, thanks for driving around and showing the new developments. I agree that without the needed infrastructure (and that's not just a road...) it will be harder to establish safer communities.

@@MsHojat I think you are totally wrong on this. 80% of “international” students are from India! Also the “degree mills” colleges had 70% of Indian students apply for asylum in Canada and they got it and it had been happening for years. The Canadian govt tries to hide these statistics in line with their bizzare tradition of currying g favour with India. Also during the pandemic time of 2020 to mid2023 80% of new arrivals were Indians. Other migrants from Asia, Europe and Latin America were barely 20%.

I was bankrupt 20 years ago. Saskatchewan resident here. In 2007 I started working insane hours, mostly in low and crap type jobs. I pulled myself up and bought a house. Ten years ago I started a business. Right now I am in grand shape relatively speaking. However, to start over right now - low skilled and semi skilled jobs are all gone. In Saskatchewan the housing costs are still somewhat okay, but to get established is getting really difficult. The past five years have become extremely tough. Me, if I were a young person in this economy I would be struggling - especially a young white person. Immigration kicked the crap out of the lower class the past half decade. These immigrants are mainly low skilled individuals.

This is heartbreaking, and the fact that it was avoidable, had we had proper governance, had we stopped greedy oligarchs from bringing in hordes of young men to supposedly work for low wages, who'd accept 3rd world living conditions as normal, who instead of are just living off benefits increasingly-poor Canadian tax-payers have to fund... Ottawa used to be so incredibly safe. You could walk home from dance clubs and bars, through the Byward Market, down Elgin St at any time of the night and feel safe, even a couple of girls. We should be more angry and outraged that our rulers have gutted our cities and towns, have taken and destroyed everything that made our country beautiful and livable.
