Canada | Patriotic song : "The Maple Leaf Forever" (Instrumental version)

“The Maple Leaf Forever” is a patriotic song composed by Alexander Muir (words and music) in October 1867, the year of Confederation. Next to "O Canada," which it predates by 13 years, “The Maple Leaf Forever” has been the most popular patriotic song composed in Canada. For generations, it and “God Save the King” were the de facto national anthems in English Canada. However, due to its British colonial perspective, the song did not become popular among French Canadians. As “O Canada” emerged as the official national anthem in the latter half of the 20th century, the popularity of “The Maple Leaf Forever” waned among English Canadians, although it was somewhat reinvigorated by a new version performed by Anne Murray in 1999 and Michael Bublé in 2010.

@@Bellg There is more to the Canadian identity than British colonialism. The British led an ethnic cleanse against the French Canadians and the Indigenous. I would rather have an anthem that is neutral than hearing something that celebrates mass murder then tries to rewrite Canadian history to favour the British and makes the British into our saviours. And I say this as somebody with direct ties to Britain with my family. Second generation Canadian on that side of my family. But I also say this as a Canadian that has French and Indigenous as well. Besides, Canada is no longer a dominion. Fairly certain we stopped using that term before the start of the Second World War when we gained some of our independence. So The Maple Leaf Forever is seriously outdated. However, at least The Maple Leaf Forever does discuss some Canadian history. The French Indian wars (Seven Years' War to Europeans) with Wolfe mentioned... The expansion of Canada with the whole 'Our dominion now extends bit'... Interestingly enough, there's no mention of The War of 1812 which Canadians (specifically English Canadians) pride themselves on gloating about. But maybe back then, Canadians considered that to be a stalemate fought by the British and didn't identify themselves as part of their troops.

Personal taste is personal taste. I like the emphasis on the main verses... But think they could have done a better job with the rest and have a stronger ending. But I do like the rendition over all. I am sure that the army does a much better job in playing The Maple Leaf Forever.

As much as I like the original lyrics, the explicit references to the UK, like James Wolfe, Britannia's flag, the thistle, shamrock, and rose, speak only of those from the British Isles who colonized Canada ignoring the contributions of immigrants and the First Nations as well as this country's less then stellar aspects of our history.
