The song is an old greek folk song from west Minor Asia (Anatolia). The singer tries to prevent the person he loves from emigrating. He tells the person to stay away from the sea (which was associated with distant trips and emigration in the mentality of the Greeks of the Ottoman era), but the person responds that he/she can manage the dangers of the sea (and emigration). Finally, the singer expresses his huge sorrow for his beloved person's emigrating, cause not only he won't meet the person again, but also he won't have any news from him/her again, since the singer is illiterate and will not be able to read the person's letters.

The music of the song as the most (if not all) Greek folk songs is legacy of the Byzantine music of our ancestors. Actually, at the end, it is not 'because I don't know letters...'. It translates into 'because I don't know how to read' because in Greek, the word 'Γράμμα/Letter' means both 'written correspondence' and 'character in the alphabet'. So, he can't read the letters of the letter.
