THE SONG DISCRIBES THE THOUSANDS OF GREEKS OF ISMIR AND ASIA MINOR DRAWNING IN THE ISMIR PORT FROM THE TURKS , OR SWIMMING TO THE ISLANDS ACROSS TO ESCAPE. THATS WHY ITS A SAD SONG.
@poppy-g5k
@poppy-g5k 2 ай бұрын
The song is way older than the catastrophe of Ismir. It's mostly about the longing for traveling and the pain of separation.

The song is an old greek folk song from west Minor Asia (Anatolia). The singer tries to prevent the person he loves from emigrating. He tells the person to stay away from the sea (which was associated with distant trips and emigration in the mentality of the Greeks of the Ottoman era), but the person responds that he/she can manage the dangers of the sea (and emigration). Finally, the singer expresses his huge sorrow for his beloved person's emigrating, cause not only he won't meet the person again, but also he won't have any news from him/her again, since the singer is illiterate and will not be able to read the person's letters.

Dalaras is one of the big voices in my opinion not only in Greece but in Europe and globaly.. He has some controversial political encounters lately and become more and more odd but just from the voice and singing... If he would been not from smal Greece but living in UK using English he could have done any Musik you can imagine.

Dalaras is a legend of modern Greek music, his performances are events, it's the only way to describe them, he is the master of the music that embodies all the suffering of the Greek people, the modern history of our country from 1821 to now is about that. Dalaras is a master of this music.

Thank you for you great video IJ. If I may, I would like to make a comment about Sufism. The music of the song as the most (if not all) Greek folk songs is legacy of the Byzantine music of our ancestors. Later agter the conquer of the Byzantine empire by the muslims they inherited Byzantine music and among them Sufism too.

Actually, at the end, it is not 'because I don't know letters...'. It translates into 'because I don't know how to read' because in Greek, the word 'Γράμμα/Letter' means both 'written correspondence' and 'character in the alphabet'. So, he can't read the letters of the letter.
