Canada Road Trip: Best Things To Do In The Northwest Territories

Must Do Canada

7 жыл бұрын

In this video, we share some of the best things to do in the Northwest Territories, including Yellowknife, Inuvik, and Tuktoyaktuk!
Welcome to the NWT!
With more than one million square kilometres of land area and a population of less than 50,000, the Northwest Territories is about as wild as it gets. It's certainly not an easy area to visit (many places are fly-in, many roads are gravel, and distances are vast) but for those who make the effort, there are incredible things to experience.
With boreal forest, arctic tundra, some of Canada's greatest waterfalls, a vibrant indigenous culture, and boundless wilderness, this is an adventurer's paradise!
We explored the NWT from August 16 - September 1st, 2017!

Canada's Road to 150 is a 150-day Canada-wide multi-media road trip celebrating Canada's 150th birthday by exploring the uniqueness of this country provincially and collectively while answering the question; What makes Canada special?
We will drive to and through every driveable province and territory, showcasing Canada's natural beauty and regional attractions while interviewing Canadians of all cultures and backgrounds, including local celebrities, immigrants, refugees, and everyday rural and urban Canadians. Our aim is to dig deep into what makes Canada such an incredibly inspiring country while showing off the best of Canada's tourism to Canadians and to the world.

Must Do Canada I was planning to go this December to spend Christmas... as much as I want to visit during summer my schedules just don’t work for now. I loved nature so much. I’ve been around Pulpit rock, Trolltunga, and Bergen Norway. Thank you for the info! It helped me so much!

Must Do Canada I learned this while living in Norway, “there’s no bad weather only bad clothing” and I add up... bad timing as well” 😉 LOL 😆 that’s the reason as well I wanted to go! The Northern Lights, because I wasn’t able to see it when I was in Norway. 😊

@@livelikeitsspring01 True! I would like to go. I mean, I did grow up in Northern Alberta after all. But yes, the lights are tricky. Everything has to be the right timing. Clear skies, activity, no bright moon, etc

@MustDoCanada
@MustDoCanada 5 жыл бұрын
10 days might be pushing it for the Dempster. You'd have to fly to Whitehorse and rent a car. Make sure it is allowed on the Dempster and then start the drive. Without stopping, it's about 20 hours one-way. Maybe more. You'd need at least 3-4 nights each way. I'd stick to maybe Whitehorse and Dawson and Kluane (Yukon) or just Yellowknife and some fly-in fishing lakes

2 cents. Your grind your way out of debt, and you can do pretty much anything you want. You drive that 700 dollar work beater till it drops. Bury it and buy another. No car payments. You live in an unfinished house for years, all the while appreciating every step of the way and being content in it. You stick to your goals. Get knocked down, defeated and get back up and say it is worth it. And some day you sell it all and move farther north. Haha just my 2 cents.

@MustDoCanada

Yeah, the NWT can be expensive, mainly due to the remoteness and that the activities are largely outdoor-based. So, if you're just going to Yellowknife to see northern lights, or bringing a tent and fishing on your own, it can be cheap for the most part. But a fly-in fishing lodge is probably somewhere around 4-5K for a week all-inclusive... That flight over Nahanni is somewhere around the $600 mark I believe.

Well, you can't get much more opposite in terms of population haha. I think Yellowknife has like 50,000 people. Yukon, next door, has around the same and some say, more wolves than people! haha. But yes, beautiful no doubt. Super cold long and dark winters. Summers with almost no darkness.

On a commercial plane flying from Paris to Chicago 20 ago, I flew over something I still can't pin on an exact or even approximate location.. It was overrealistic.. Infinite swathes of shallow wather with flat, oval rocks all over it.. Totally uninhabited.. No snow, though it was August.. The stewardess showed me on the map after I asked, it was something like Northern Canada, but I couldn't say where now.. Weird, a flight from Paris France to Chicago flying over Northern Canada? Any clue?

Hmm, that does seem odd, but I suppose it was possible to go north and come down over Nunavut (Canada's East North) and down to Chicago. We flew to Cambodia from Calgary, but for some reason, they flew north and came down over Russia. Weird but maybe something to do with air currents. Cool though! I've never flew over Nunavut. It's the only territory we haven't been

@@MustDoCanada Yeah it's gotta be Nunavut.. Of course I searched Google Earth since then but images arent' focused enough on this part of the world (they'll be someday).. You're right it's gotta be more up North than I thought, and a place on the map where land is particularly torn to bits.. I don't think anyone could ever trek or even fly over (on small planes) such a place.. It's also weird that I remember seing it so distinctly when I should've been flying 30.000 feet high. Well, flying Chicago-Paris is a good one))

Infinite swathes of shallow water? That sounds a lot like northern Québec or Northern Ontario. It would be in the flight path of a commercial plane going from Paris to Chicago, planes don't fly in a straight line from point A to B, they perform a sort of arc which takes them to a higher latitude. Though I doubt it was Nunavut, that seems a bit too high in latitude. Open Google earth and type in "lac Perroche", it and the surrounding area could match your description, lots of water and round/oval islands all over the place. It's also right in the flight path to Chicago from what I can tell.

How many days and how much did you spend a for Northwest Territories and Yukon trip?
@MustDoCanada
@MustDoCanada 6 жыл бұрын
We had a lot of sponsorship from local companies and tourism boards but it can be cheap or expensive. If you're flying out to secluded lodges or taking flightseeing tours over the national park, it will be pretty expensive. I think a week in the lodge is around $5K but I'm not 100% sure. This is flights, meals, etc. Hotels though are about average, maybe $100-150 per night, maybe less in the low season. There are hostels and plenty of options for camping as well. Food is a bit expensive though, although you can find restaurant meals for $15 and there's usually Tim Horton's and Subway for cheaper food. We bought groceries quite abit. We spent about one month between the two (or maybe three weeks) but we also drove all the way to the Arctic. Also, the drive between Whitehorse, Yukon and Yellowknife is crazy long. Maybe 30 hours. We'll write up an article soon with more info.

Just subscribed to your channel. I'd love to do this in the future. There's no doubt that Canada is one of the more beautiful countries in the world. I used to fly to Iqaluit quite often years ago and always enjoyed the peaceful feeling of the North.
