WestJet has an identity crisis. Originally they wanted to be the Southwest of Canada. Then they decided they want to become a full cost carrier to compete with AC head on, hence the 787 order and offering business class product. However, they've now done a complete 180 to focus more on their LCC roots, by reducing operations on the east coast, doubling down on YYC as their only hub, and cancelling the rest of the 787 order, but their prices are usually as expensive as AC. I just don't understand the direction they are going for.

787 is a low cost carrier’s workhorse. Just look at all these long haul LCCs popping up everywhere just utilizing 787s. If WestJet were to order 777, I would agree that they are going full-service. But with just 737 and 787, nahhhhh

It's possible, but I doubt we'll see it for quite some time. WestJet's summer schedule is very tight with over 7 transcontinental routes and only 7 Dreamliners - so they don't have a lot of room to add another long haul service at the moment. Sydney is also served from Vancouver with Air Canada, and with all of WestJet's long haul flights originating in Calgary, a Calgary to Sydney flight would be pushing the limits of a 787. Not that it isn't possible, just unlikely.

I have never flown Westjet, but I'd like to. As a Canadian, I'm proud of how fast that airline grew. I hope it expands from its Calgary hub to include Vancouver and Toronto as well, and possibly Montreal. May it continue to grow and prosper.
@specialcb
@specialcb Жыл бұрын
Vancouver and Toronto used to be hubs, Toronto was cut and Vancouver was shrunk from major operations after they put the focus on Calgary. Once they receive new planes, I bet Vancouver will come back with some major flights but since they are focusing on Western Canada I doubt that Toronto will ever become a hub again.
@Prodagist
@Prodagist 5 ай бұрын
@@specialcbTo be fair, I can't really blame them for dropping Toronto as a hub, Toronto is Air Canada's main hub, as well as Porters main hub, and it's Air Transat's secondary hub, with all that competition from 3 other major airlines in Canada, they probably weren't making much money off of Toronto, if any at all. Focusing on Calgary and Vancouver is a pretty smart idea, as Calgary has no major competition from other Airlines, and Vancouver only really has competition from Air Canada.
@specialcb
@specialcb 5 ай бұрын
@@Prodagist I completely agree, it was the right move. They are also now able to capitalize on connections/transfers to Europe (even from the US, which is proving to go quite well) as there's only one trans-ocean hub.

Your facts are a little twisted. WestJet was founded by David Neeleman and based off of the model of Morris air, which he cofounded with June Morris. Southwest acquired Morris Air tand as part of a noncompete clause, Neeleman move to Canada to found WestJet he has since founded a total of five separate airlines.

I flew in July 2023 on a WestJet 737 MAX8 on a return journey, my first on a MAX. I enjoyed flying on the aircraft, but one minor negative surprise was the lack of in-seat flight entertainment systems. Unfortunately, due to typical passenger noises during boarding, I couldn't hear the PA system and I didn't realize until after takeoff (and therefore cell phone flight mode) that an app was required to view content on personal devices. Given its ticketing price points being similar to Air Canada's, and with my flying on AC's A220-300's on my outbound journey, which had more robust in-seat flight entertainment systems, this was a minor disappointment to an otherwise satisfying flight.

In all likelihood, WestJet will remain a Boeing only operator for some years to come, especially since all their new aircraft and fleet renewal are being done with Boeing aircraft. I once flew on an old WestJet 767 from Barcelona to Toronto. I can't say that it was a great experience, but it wasn't terrible either. Perhaps the experience would be enhanced if it were on a Dreamliner.

They won't be, as Calgary, where they now have their focus, has a fair bit less Air Canada competition and is an undersaturated market so its a win-win for both AC and WS.

What a terrible airline. People complains about Air Canada, but I think Westjet is a lot worse. I have used Westjet twice in my life, one time to UK London and another time to Cancun Mexico. Both flights were massively delayed making me late for one full day for both trips. No compensation for the expensive resort/hotel I booked in London and Cancun. No compensation for the local tours. I have to make drastic last minute change on my itinerary. It is time for Canada to let other airline in to compete. The Canadian air service is expensive and sub standard compared to anywhere else in the world.

In maintenance, we call them "Borderliners." But honestly, even with all the new tech teething problems, their low fuel consumption still compensates for the many repairs they require. Even the yearly overhauls of the GenX engines necessary on the 787-10 aren't really that much of a cost problem (right now the first stages of the high-pressure turbine burn up pretty quickly on the -10). Though it does require a lot of new parts and man hours. And to be fair, Boeing customer service is very good. The 737NG has been fantastic in general, but the 737 MAX is a dog though. Glad the airline I work for chose the A320 and A321 Neo to replace the 737NG.
