Tbh: Smart, Programable grenades have value and uses, but unless the tech for the scope and programming of the grenades get lighter and packaged in a scope closer in size and heft to conventional ones, it will at most be a Standalone XM-25 if it must be adopted. To be used by your average dumb muscle grunt, OICWs will forever be damned to being ditched, no way to make it a SI weapon, and even a specialized squad member role weapon is possibly iffy. The "Self-Defense" AR element is a problem, and as some have proposed in comments, making a middle ground balance between the 1950s SPIW and today's OICW in implementation would make better sense. - Replace the 5.56mm AR for a PDW in 5.7mm or 4.6mm, if necessary for ammo commonality, put it as the sidearm's caliber (9mm, 45 ACP...). - No Smart Grenades, would ditch the OICW concept entirely, but also would make the useless and overweight optics also not needed to be with the gun, making the weight and ergonomics easier to balance with the program demands. - No Semi-Auto GL component... Or just turn it into a Single shot M320 component. Solves reliability issues, as well as free some weight to balance the gun around. - Make it standalone weapon, or one that the soldier given it can carry along an AR or PDW, this solves the ergonomics problems altogether. By ditching OICW concept entirely
