Stopping rifles like the 4-bore are, in fact, defensive firearms. They're not for hunting big game animals, they're made to stop those big game animals from hunting _you._ It's right there on tin-- it's a _stopping_ rifle.

Velocity over mass is traditional sniper thinking. 416 Rigby is sniper thinking applied to very large game so it packs absurd velocity AND a decent amount of mass. The only things you can't take down with either a solid slug or an expander are items listed on army procurement documents.

It's the .416 Rigby that always impresses me the most of those big rifles. Less then half the size of the 4-bore yet something about it's slug transfers insane amounts of energy up front and absolutely WRECKS things in a manner that matches or even exceeds the 4-bore, and far better then the other larger rifles!
@andersjjensen

The 416 Rigby is for turning things into mist. The 4-bore is for shooting an entire regiment of soldiers. One is practically a small impact detonated grenade and the other is a freight train that doesn't stop until next county.

The nice part about the .416 Rigby is that it can make just enough velocity that you can tune up a load for damn near anything. You've got the BC for a slick heavy solid that zips through everything, and you've got the capability for velocity that really makes the lighter softpoints "pop"... as evident here. That 350gr was probably pushing upwards of 2600fps, and they make 300gr that would do 2700, maybe 2800 for the adventurous loader. And yet, it's still small enough that you could down-load for smaller game, too. Just don't mix loads up, a whitetail trip would see you come back with a dozen pounds of pre-processed (dirty) venison burger. God, a fast 300gr would probably turn a heart shot into a front and back half...

Sooo... not quite a Grizzly bear story, but... back in the 1960's my dad was in the military, and was sent up to the D.E.W. line in Alaska (well, I *think* this was in Alaska - he was also stationed further north, in Canada I think, at some point). So the local town had a trash dump, and it had a seagull problem. Not only were the birds a problem right at the dump, but they were badly messing up the local ecosystem and destroying the eggs and nests of a couple of endangered bird species. So, the town had a gentleman's agreement with the base, that the guys stationed up there would do their target practice at the dump. With their service rifles - which I believe was still 30-06 chambered M1 Garands (M16s in 5.56 would come later). Well, it turns out that the shock cavitation channel made by a 30-06 round is larger than the body of a Seagull, so... BOOM! And the bird would disappear, all that's left is a bunch of feathers in the wind. As for the actual bears up there (polar bears in this case) - he's told the story of being tracked by two of them, one off in the distance on his right, and one off on the left, all the way back to base. So, um, yeah - carrying something big & powerful is pretty much essential up there, lest ye become somebear's lunch.

Hi Scott. Absolutely love your videos! My 4 year old has now become obsessed, however you are now forever known as Sticky Ballistics in this household! 🤣 She loves the Ballistic moulds you have on the channel. Especially the new bear ones!

This reminds me of a weapons documentary I watched a long time ago. It explained how when people used swords, they could inflict about 60 to 100 jewels of energy on the enemy, but when gunpowder came into being, that number shot up to 2000 jewels and made chain mail and smith-hammered armor obsolete.

Plate armor actually remained in use during the rise of gunpowder. It's actually where we get the term Bullet Proof from. They would test the plate against a pistol at point blank range, and if the armor shrugged off the bullet, it was deemed Bullet Proof.

@@NoobTamerYep. The indentation from the bullet was kept as well, to serve as a mark of its quality. Unscrupulous blacksmiths would even try to hammer in a bullet mark so that the could sell at a premium

I thought the exact same thing. You can still see the case head when the breech is closed, I was wondering if that kind of failure would be survivable.

I know at least Glocks leave a small amount of case head unsupported... just look at the bulged brass they eject! But 9mm surrounded by a steel slide is a far cry from FOUR BORE BY YOUR EYEBALL.

I love that 416 Rigby, always a treat ;-) Was expecting to see the classic side-by-side Elephant rifles but a great video non the less. Hmm... what would happen is one set an line of paint cans and some blank canvas and then shot through the cans with a 4 Bore, would that be "modern art, Kentucky style"?

Plot twist - Scott obviously never planned to shoot 22 today, otherwise why would he be able to pull a 4 bore straight from the ether? So he's not only physically abusing his poor shoulder, but gaslighting it too once called out! What a monster

I just thought of something. Ballistic gel targets in the form of rhinos, hippos, and elephants. The four bore was originally used for big and dangerous game, so I want to see what a modern four bore with more power behind it would do.
