@lightaces
@lightaces 3 жыл бұрын
Rogers' death deserves a mention, as it was in keeping with who he was. As I recall the story (which is how all stories about folk singers should begin), he was flying home from a gig, and after they had landed and were taxiing to the gate, a fire broke out. Stan could easily have made it off the plane in an orderly manner, but he paused to help some travelers who were in difficulty, and ended up dying of smoke inhalation. A hero of a song writer (try not getting choked up by the Mary Ellen Carter or The Jennie C.), but a hero in life as well.
@moeburnsnaughtychannel2352

Worse yet, Stan Rogers was famously terrified of flying, never flew, was basically forced to fly because of his career, and that was only his second flight ever.

Alas, that story about Rogers’ death is just a folk tale. The fire broke out 18 minutes into the flight, and slowly put smoke into the entirety of the plane. The fresh air that swept into the plane when the emergency doors were opened caused a flash fire that engulfed the half of the people that didn’t survive (23 or 46 people) within 90 seconds, killing them either via burns or smoke inhalation (Rogers died of the later). Rogers in reality had no time to save anyone. Here’s an article on how the tall tale of Rogers as a hero started and spread: singout.org/stan-rogers-flowers-bermuda/4/

When I was a teenager (early 2000s), my uncle owned an M&M Meat Shop in Canmore, Alberta and I was helping him work the Christmas rush. He put this song on loud over the system, and one by one, the customers (who had all been singing along as they waited) would hand me their purchases to ring through and explain their connection to the Maritimes ("my husband is from Shediac," "I went to University at Dalhousie," "I was born in New Glasgow, I'm here working in oil and gas," "we are Acadien on my mum's side"). It is one of my favourite and most Canadian memories.

My friend and I were in Sanctuary, a shop just off Whyte ave in Edmonton when her 5 year old sang out "Oh the year was 1778" and the Goth shop owner answered her with "How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now". We stood there entranced as these two amazing voices sent echoes of our history circling the space, playing off the echoes of the old wooden warehouse that had become the shop, drawing us in to the magic they were creating. I first saw Stan at the 1980 Edmonton Folk Music Festival and he captured my spirit in ways that very few ever have, bringing a deep peace I had forgotten existed for me.

I’ve never heard the song (or of the singer) before. Since watching this video, though, I’ve downloaded a “Very Best of” and for two days have been smiling from ear to ear (and getting emotional, too!). Thank you SO MUCH for introducing me to Stan Rogers!!

My friend and I in the 1980s would sing this in the car on long journeys, just to pass the time. We knew all the words. Doesn't matter how much I've had to drink, if I so much as hear the phrase "Oh the year was 1778" my corpse would rise to the call with, "How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now", in full harmony.

So happy that you covered Stan Rogers! I learned guitar mostly so I could sing his songs. He's very popular with the folkers and filkers in the SCA contingent in the US. Even here in Indiana, his name is legend! Thanks again for taking time from your hiatus to share Stan's magic and music. 🎶🥰

Oddly, as an American who's interested in folky stuff and sea shanties like this, I actually discovered this song a couple years ago completely on my own through a cover of it. It's a genuinely good song and definitely something for you guys up north to be proud of having.

He wrote so many great songs. I remember a few years back on a new years day in central Ontario being not in the best shape and having a unsure grip on the passage of time, I swear I listened to his "northwest passage" on the CBC for about 40 minutes. Obviously the song isn't that long but it was a great 40 minutes to start the year lol. Every now and then I'll pull out all my Stan Rogers vinyl and a bottle and make a day of it, always fun.

I like to say that I'm 1/32 Canadian. My 3rd great-grandmother Fanny Matilda Betts was from New Brunswick. Her parents moved there from New York in 1783 since her father had been Surgeon in Robert Roger's Queen's Rangers and later with James De Lancey's Cowboys in Westchester County, and they rightfully fled political persecution. The funny thing is that she married my 3rd great-grandfather Caleb Haskell (son of Caleb Haskell, Patriot soldier) from Newburyport, Massachusetts (a port town known for smuggling and privateering) in Canada in March of 1815, just a few months after the War of 1812. They moved to Newburyport a few years later, but I am puzzled as to how they met and got married so soon after their countries had been at war with each other. The town of Gloucester, Massachusetts (not far from Newburyport) has a list of people who were Lost at Sea out of Gloucester. There are 13 Haskells on it.

I've been listening to sea shanties for years, but I had the same response when I found out sea shanties became popular again. A mix of "Glad you finally came around" and "I guess I'm with it again".
