Been in canada for 10 yrs never been sick. Only time I needed heath services was for my 1rst child last year. Went 7 months of pregnancy tests and exams paid nothing. I spent 2 months in NICU didn't pay a dime. Took 6 months parental leave still got income coming (could have taken 12 months since my spouse doesn't work). I don't care how rich I get. I'll always support universal health care. It worked for me.

@@pewyoutuber3148 ---- Having lived in both countries I can tell you that the US may seem cheaper as a visitor on a weekend shopping trip but when you actually live there you realize it's not. Instead of paying an extra $100 a month on your grocery bill if your in Canada, in the US you're paying at least $200 a month (if you're lucky and have a good plan through your employer) for health insurance. A monthly bill that doesn't exist in Canada. As for taxes, if you're making 6 or 7 figures, than yes, Americans pay less tax, but if you're a regular working class Joe than you'd actually pay lower income tax rates in Canada. They also dont have tax shelters like a TFSA that allows you to earn capital gains untaxed. Don't forget about no tax if you sell your primary residence that you've lived in for at least 2 years in Canada. In the US they'll be taking 30+% of the sale price in tax.

A South Asian here. I`ve lived in UK, lived in Canada.. and now living in the US for 8 years now I am a middle-income earner with an immigrant background. So I think I am qualified to give my input from an outsiders perspective USA is made for people in their 20s, when they have high energy and the naiveness of young optimistic soul. Options are unlimited. But then when you get to your 30s, you`ll want some measure of security and peace. Thats where Canada is the best option. But as you reach late 40s,early 50s you will want to look at a place to retire to... thats where UK wins, it is the perfect place to retire So in Summary, US is best for 20s. CA is best for 30s/40s. UK is best for 50s,60s. A colleague of mine tells me Australia is the perfect mix of all three. But I cant tell as I have not lived or been there.

I'm also Canadian and moved to the USA to marry my (now) husband, and I definitely notice some major differences. I think much of this really depends on where you're living in the US. I spent most of my life in Ottawa, and now live in South Central Pennsylvania. I'm surrounded by hillbillies, haha. In some ways healthcare is better in the US - I have waited much less time for health care, and also if you're paying in cash for the doctor many places offer a discount here. And I hear you on Amazon Prime! I use it all the time here! Not to mention so many cool vegan foods I could never get in Canada are easily available here.

Alyson Margaret I could compared statistics all day, but some of the greatest counterpoints to Canada being better are the intangible attributes of the US. Academically, although Canada may rank higher on standardized tests of science or math, the US cultivates a culture of innovation, and the US is phenomenal at teaching students to challenge the status quo - the reason for so many cultural, scientific, technological innovations being done on American soil or by American minds. Furthermore, the culture in the US is irreplaceable - the amount of diversity, geographically, socially, demographically, makes the USA the great nation it is today.

Wealthy Canadians go to American hospitals and specialists regularly to bypass the provincial systems.
@shayll1963
@shayll1963 6 жыл бұрын
Regularly is too strong of a word. But when your basic health needs are covered and you can afford to skip lines and pay for it, why not? I cannot imagine having to pay the amount of money some pay just to have basic health checkups. Also I know some Americans that are covered by insurance but are afraid to have certain test done to have things checked out because they are afraid of what it will cost them or they cannot afford it or their premiums will go up (one lady mentioned avoiding a mammogram for this reason). A few years ago, everyday i came home from work my left leg didn't work properly and hurt so much i would limp. It was happening too frequently and went to the doctor in which i was set up for xrays for my back. results showed nothing and then i was sent to have a MRI which discovered i have compressed discs that caused damage to the nerves and a couple things they weren't looking for. The reason i had pain in my left leg and limped was because of the pressure in my back caused the disc to lean on the nerve and gave me pinched nerve symptoms. I did physiotherapy and with time, I am doing much better. I do not limp and have only slight pain. I do not take any medications for the pain as it is manageable. All this and not a single penny came out of my pocket! I also got information about preventable things to do, so i do not make other issues, they discovered, worse and i can continue living a normal healthy life. Before the above mention incident, a routine physical exam, that i do not pay for, discovered i had cancerous cells. I was the stage before cancer and able to go see a specialist and have it removed. I am now out of high risk and gone back to routine checkups - at no cost out of my pocket. This was at a time when i was lower income (only 23 years old at the time). if i did not go to that checkup because of money - i would most likely of developed cancer, the same as my grandmother had and died from. So i will take wait times over no checkups/coverage. As you stated, WEATHLY CANADIANS go to the states. The ones who can't afford to still get healthcare.

Unfortunately, in Canada you have to wait years for things you could have in way less time in the states IF you can pay for it. I have seizures every day and am on a two year waiting list to have the necessary testing done. Despite being unable to work enough to support myself due to the episodes, because they are un-diagnosed, I do not qualify for disability assistance. I pay for health care through taxes, yet cannot receive timely care, or assistance while I wait. There are definitely pros and cons to each system.

Here in the U.S., trying to obtain disability is like pulling teeth. There's just so much red tape and obstacles that it sometimes seems impossible and some people who *_should_* qualify give up in frustration. The whole system is biased against the applicant and it could take years, even if you have a solid case. And that's *_with_* a good lawyer.

Welcome to the US. Visiting Toronto (and outlying Ontario) as an American on three occasions in the last 5 years here are my observations: 1) Canadians in public don't use vulgar language as much as Americans. Canadians are professional and polite.(soooooreey) 2) Everyone in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) seem healthy and fit, and I felt I was the only obese person there. 3) Some of your foods taste better than ours, some doesn't. (i.e. Pizza) But poutine is great!! 4) I miss Tim Horton's. Something about that Large Double Double makes me miss Canada. 5) Canadian women are beautiful. Every other face I could fall in love with. 6) Taxes. Holy Shit. When I went in July 2014, gas for Premium 94 at ESSO converted was $6.00 USD!! Costing $80 a tank!! 7) Extremely clean and doesn't smell like piss (Like New York City) 8) Canadian Pride. The Maple Leaf flag is on everything. On every street corner, on every bumper sticker, on every window 9) When your news channel (CP24) complains about traffic during rush hour who's job it is to paint lines on the roads after winter and raising taxes for a new bridge, your city doesn't have "United States" problems. (Said nicely, not rudely)

We live in N.Y. about 2 hrs from the border to Canada and we love to go to NOTL for a quick vacation whenever we can - usually 4 or 5 times a year! We find Canadians to be WAY more chill than Americans and we love visiting Canada. One thing I'll tell you is figure out the insurance because we've had employees who didn't bother to do this resulting in them having none. When that happens, and you file your income taxes, the IRS takes a fine out of your return. The first year it's like $100, but it goes up each year. After a few years they can fine you like $600. Depending on how much you earn you may be able to apply for assistance in paying your health care premium or may not have to pay at all. I would encourage you to do that before you start getting fined...and welcome to the USA lol!

@MirandaScaresYou 8 жыл бұрын
Living in Canada, no one carries guns around with them, ever. I don't see the need to carry one for protection, because very veeeery rarely does anyone ever have a gun. And how I see it, even the nicest law abiding citizen can get into a very heated situation, or have one too many drinks and things could get out of hand when you have a gun on you. Obviously that would be a very rare case, but I feel better with no one having a gun. Guns are something we really don't deal with here. The right to bear arms would never fly here. But if you are comfortable with it, all the power to you! You do you!

Shootings over petty things like that rarely happen in America. Sure, people shoot other people over disagreements but that's people who know each other and have problems between the two. And yeah, we've had mass shootings, but the people doing those mass shootings didn't acquire those guns legally anyway so that argument is completely useless. I've never felt anxious around anyone with a gun in my 18, almost 19, years of living in a southern state in the USA and people have hot tempers down here.

Canada is second choice after USA, or let's say USA to overcrowded, and it's difficult even for Canadians to settle there, people from all over the world choose CN, because it is need only 10th $to emigrate whereas in USA much more. Yes the healthcare it is free, but you have to pay 500$ for the ambulance. yes the healthcare it's free but you have to wait like months just to get an appointment. And trust me, this thing of" free healthcare", Canadians are double paying through the taxes.

The higher tax rates of 13% + increase of 25-30% for goods and services is not justified in the care one receives. Vitamin D testing in CA should be mandatory and its not. Also Dental and Vision STILL require supplementary health plans like in the States. My mother's family is Canadian (GTA to Van City) and I've heard story after story surgery waiting lists, misdiagnoses, etc. Both healthcare systems are broken ...We need to shift our focus completely! Food=Medicine and preventative measures. Plus Canada's farmland is replete with GMOs too... Don't get me started! 😜💗🌍

Strangepete I could compared statistics all day, but some of the greatest counterpoints to Canada being better are the intangible attributes of the US.

@shayll1963

You forgot to mention the reduced grants given to the hospitals from the government (tax payers) each year because of Obamacare. When more people became insured, the amount of money given to hospitals by governments (taxpayers) was reduced because less people without coverage. With the repel of the healthcare, hospitals are filing for more money for grants or to get the same amount as before because it covers the cost of treating uninsured people. You pay that as a taxpayer. So would you rather have more people insured or would you rather the government give more money to hospitals in the form of grants? Having more people insured is a step towards having a better healthcare system. Instead of just removing it and having people without insurance. If people have no insurance, then don't get proper care, their health deteriorates and they may be unable to work, placed on welfare or disability - money paid out by government/taxpayers. Sometimes you have to look at the bigger picture and see cause and effect. Healthy people, more workers, more people able to support themselves. Although some may not agree with Obamacare, it's a step forward and the problems with it should be worked on and improved, not just removed. Removing just put you back a step and not forward.

As a Canadian living in Indiana USA, I can relate deeply to the healthcare part. I have had hospital emergency runs a few times in Toronto and despite the long wait time, I didn't have to pay a cent. Here in the US, however, I am deeply wary that if something were to happen I will end up with a 5-figure-or-more bill and potentially go broke that I have to go back to Canada. The fact that foreigners are considered "non-resident alien" and any international student has the possibility to be deported if they commit any misdemeanour is also disturbing to me as in Canada the attitude towards foreigners is way more friendly and the laws towards underage drinking are much looser. For me Canada is basically the Lite version of USA and vice versa, USA is the high-risk high-reward version of Canada.

Thank you! Plus our political parties are very different. Democrats tend to think and act more like Canadians. Whereas Republicans are more of what's wrong with our country 😅. The way they think and the vision they have for this country is similar to the stereotype people outside of America see. I hate being seen that way in other countries.

Most Canadians (the wealthy ones) travel to "Merica, the 'ol USA, to those horrible American doctors (lol) to obtain procedures and surgeries that otherwise they would die waiting for in Canada. Eh. - Love, a Dual Citizen.+unconventionalliving @unconventionalliving

+Natalie Anne I have never heard of people dying waiting for doctors in Canada. But I know for a fact that Canadian students are among the top performers in the world and that the country enjoys higher quality of life and more highly advanced social support systems than America according to the Better Life Index , OECD surveys and Mercer.

+keptins I lived in Ontario for 3 yrs. There is no "free" healthcare. The people pay. The higher tax rates of 13% + increase of 25-30% for goods and services, is not justified in the care one receives. Vitamin D testing in CA should be mandatory and its not. Also Dental and Vision STILL require supplementary health plans like in the States. My mother's family is Canadian (GTA to Van City) and I've heard story after story of surgery waiting lists, misdiagnoses, etc. Both healthcare systems are broken ...We need to shift our focus completely! Food=Medicine and preventative measures. Plus Canada's farmland is replete with GMOs too... there are fat and ignorant people in Canada too! Don't get me started! 😜💗🌍

I grew up exposed to the brainwashing that surrounds Canadian healthcare and I didn't really think about it until we were moving south. I didn't find it strange that we had no family doctor for years or that I had to wait 4 weeks for an ultrasound to see if I had a gallstone. Even a 3 month wait for a surgical consult seemed reasonable while I was consuming 30 vicodin 10s a week and heading to the ER every 4 days for IV painkillers (later changed to percoccet because I built up a tollerance to vicodin). Even when the surgeon placed me on a 6 to 12 month waiting list my thinking was along the lines of 'well other people must need it more than I do'. All this was in Ottawa. Then I visited my wife in small town Paw Paw Michigan (3500 people). I arrived on Wednesday, we registered with a family doctor on Wednesday and I saw him Thursday morning. Surgical consult was Thursday afternoon and surgery was Monday (he would have done it on Friday, but there really was someone in worse shape). So I endured months (April to Oct) of dibilitating pain and opioid painkiller exposure for a procedure that was lengthened to 2 hours because it was delayed for so long. This is what my 53% marginal tax rate (Ontario + federal) got me in Canada. If I waited another 6 months I may have been putting myself on the waiting list for treatment for prescription painkiller addiction.

America is not all about war war war and guns just because we have a big military jeez! And not everyone here has a gun, there are some people that just don't like them for different reasons. If you come to a place like Texas yea just about everybody here has one I do, but there are still people even here that don't like um. You can't be an expert on another country by being there 100 something days. And I don't understand where everybody has this impression that all Americans are fat. Americans come in all shapes and sizes the same as everywhere els and other parts of the country are more health conscious than others. In every state you will find hundreds of gyms and plenty of muscled up fit Americans. As for the health care thing, I don't get it either but that was Obama momma and his stupid ideas, he was trying to destroy this country on purpose you know he's a muslim and we will never let one of those bastards sneak their way in office again. Now that Trump is in office he is trying to fix that or make it better some how. I have often wondered why can't we have a healthcare system like Canada's but America spends all of it's money on so many things in the world because of our position on the world stage we just can't work that out, thats what happens when you're the world super power. Most Americans have health insurance through their employer, a certain amount is taken out of our paycheck every month and if I get sick or have an emergency I pay a small co pay at the doctors office which is 35 dollars and emergency room co pay is 150 the insurance pays the rest.

MrBonners Fort Henry on one fateful day a man by the name of Francis Scott key was on a British boat making a deal to release some prisoners on the ship. When the Captain said that it wouldn't matter anyway cause the war would soon be over. What do you mean? He asked. Well you see we have called the whole British fleet to come and wipe that fort off the face of the Earth and take that flag that you care so much about with it. When Key looked behind them he saw hundreds of British ships. But if your people lower that flag we will know you surrendered and you will be under British rule. After a few hours the flag was still flying and then the shelling started. All Key could hear was gun fire and the fort being bombarded with cannon shots. After a few hours the flag STILL flew. Your people are crazy the Captain said. Hours passed and when all the shots where all shot. Key saw that The American flag was still there. Later it was found that there where body of American Patriots holding the flag up and when they died more would come and replace them. And then Key wrote the first of the words. Oh say can you see by the Dawn's early light. That is what the National Anthem means.

I'm Canadian. Like I care. Cannons, surrender, Navy, bombarded, gunfire, all war and military terminology. It is a martyr 's lament and a call to arms to continue the fight. Great words, stupid suicide. Negotiation and reasonableness is much better. Take a business point of view and figure a win-win agreement.

I'm considering moving to Canada pretty soon, one of the big questions I had was "Education"? some of my Canadian friends have told me that College/University is one of the things you have to pay for out of your own pocket? And if that's the case, I'll just finished my semester here I do have a scholarship here in America and I would hate to throw that away... Hope to hear from you soon, Thank you!

I came from a 3rd world country in the Middle East. I thought Canada is a developed and first-world country like European countries, the US, Japan, South Korea, Australia, News Land, and Singapore with the western standard, and also I thought is one of the best. The first time 2018 I arrived in Vancouver, I was shocked. I saw a lot of homelessness, trash, crime, ugly urbanism, and rusty houses in downtown and east Vancouver. I saw, homeless people, pooping and peeing everywhere and it's so common. nobody cares. I was shocked again. I endured for 3 years but every day going worst. late in 2022I decided to move to the east coast because I thought that place has a stronger culture. I chose Montreal. I had heard it is the capital of art and civilization in Canada. it was absolutely wrong. Canada is Canada. I was shocked again, again, and again. the wave of homelessness, graffiti, vandalism, bad smell, terrible infrastructure especially roads in or out of the city, and above all, you can see trash everywhere. plastic bags, tissues, water bottles, and disposable cups. You cannot see any street or park or public place without these. This is impossible. surprisingly nobody cares. neither the people nor the government!!!!!!! please, don't be fooled by the advertisement about a good Canada. please, be careful. most of the things about a good Canada are deception. comparing Canada to other developed countries is wrong because Canada is only a developing country with a lot of serious problems. maybe a 2nd world country.

Why not talk about the biking culture and eating habits of Canada vs US? oh, and living lifestyle do they have a strong minimalistic community? I heard recently that Sweden is building micro apartments for dorm housing as they have a massive shortage of housing option for college students. Are homes in Canada much smaller or what?

Yeah, we're not so awful... I'm American, living in Canada, and honestly, I'm here for my husband, who is Canadian. I absolutely ADORE him. The only thing that annoys me about Canada is the fact they seem to hate diabetics, anyone on a low-carb diet, or anyone who just doesn't want to eat a ton of sugar. In fact I can't get anything sugar-free in a store (simple things, like sugar free coffeemate, sugarfree cake mix) unless I pay, I'm not even lying here, TWENTY TIMES THE PRICE on Amazon, (I'm not paying $85.00 for a 10.2oz canister of coffee creamer... WTF?) That is 3.49USD in any walmart. These people have to be kidding me.
