About 15,000 households have been ordered to evacuate in Canada's British Columbia, as firefighters battle raging wildfires that have set homes ablaze.
Officials said a "significant" number of buildings caught fire in West Kelowna, a city of 36,000 people, and more than 2,400 homes were evacuated.
A state of emergency has been declared for the entire province, where hundreds of separate fires are burning.

For those in the UK and Ireland, ALL that land could fit inside British Columbia, with land to spare. That's why it's possible to have 300 forest fires burning just in one province. BC total land area is almost 1 million hectares, 364,764 square miles. The Kelowna fire is 27 square miles in size, 7000 hectares, approximately. That's bigger than Santa Ana California or Newark New Jersey in size. Now is it a bit clearer why 300 fires can happen in just one province?

I get your point but you have no idea what it is like to be in it…( the area) and the scale. in just 2 days we thought we’ll evacuate to our relatives in the north then in hours the fire in their area flared up and they were evacuated, we could not go west because that is into the fire. Or the trip around would be extremely long and in the smoke with an elderly parent with CoPd.. and no actual place to stay and not affordable at the coast for any length of time. We could not go south because the highway that goes south you get to via the west highway ( into the fire) . We thought of going East but then fires in communities along the way and very remote forested highway and too risky with lighten strikes happening. All that to say there are so many more real life complexities then just some land mass distance. Better not to comment when you aren’t actually in the situation.

Also, look into the basic facts about BC …I don’t even know what the exact percentage is ( quick Google search could inform you) but the vast majority of the entire population of BC is in the south. Kelowna and area is the second largest populated area in BC. apart from Vancouver ( or Victoria) . Again land ‘mass’ alone means ‘nothing’ when talking about the human impact and loss here.

We are, at least as far as livestock and pets are concerned. Within minutes of the evacuation alerts and orders going out, we had people offering their services to help people relocate their animals. There are groups who people can contact if they’ve already evacuated to go to their property and evacuate their animals. A family in my neighbourhood lost their barn the other day, but thankfully they’d already evacuated all the animals ❤ We expect fires every year, so most people already have plans in place for their animals.

Heartbreaking to see so many affected by these wildfires. My thoughts are with everyone in B.C., especially those who've had to evacuate their homes. From a small bed when we were born to a small box when we leave the world, we can take nothing away. What we enjoy is just a process. In this process, nothing can be kept. Therefore, we must learn to overcome troubles and abandon attachments. In this world, we need to be enlightened from the heart, to change ourselves, to see through quickly, and to be enlightened. @@melissastory1993. Have to disagree Melissa. Because of the heavy smoke our bombers that are technically the most helpful by dropping the water cannot fly in the smoke or at night because of visibility issues … because they DO NOT HAVE the latest technology ( infrared or sonic? ) capabilities AND YET the fires just across the boarder from the Kelowna fires in Spokane county DO HAVE bombers with this capability…the difference that could be made if our bombers could fly at night or in smoke is incalculable. I’m here today in Kelowna on alert in the smoke and we have low winds so could be a great day for those bombers to make huge progress on the fires but they aren’t flying at all because of the heavy smoke. SHAME ON OUR GOVERNMENT! All the pain, loss, mental and physical and emotional agony and trauma these people will live with in the best case scenario will be a year…it’s all on their heads! Please look into this for yourself and then write to every level of government and tell them this is unacceptable!

They havn't had any substantial rain in almost 2 months now (Hence why it's a tourist destination). Climate change has a lot to do with too... Extreme Dry conditions plus wind and fire? it's a very dangerous cocktail. What just happend recently in Hawaii is a very good example. Unusual drought and heat waves and increased dry lightning. For every degree of global warming there is 12% more lightning strikes and the north is warming faster, like 3 degrees compared to 1.1 degree globally. Furthermore, boreal forest is flammable compared to rainforest and deciduous and tropical forests, for a variety of reasons. Leaf litter acts like kindling when arid weather dries it out--normally snow pack mitigates this but we had very little snow this year and it melted incredibly early with unseasonably hot weather. Also, boreal fires can smoulder below ground and reignite, the infamous Fort McMurray fire survived an entire winter underground in the moss and roots. Also, bo real trees, balsam fir, white and black spruce, Jack pine, are not just flammable, they're explosively flammable, like the eucalyptus trees in Greece and Australia. The boreal trees literally explode and send flaming branches everywhere. They're small trees because of the harsh climate as well as being highly flammable so they become crown fires. Crown fires are when the flames shoot up past the tops of the trees which makes them particularly dangerous because the wind can then whip the embers forward long distances--that's how the West Kelowna fire jumped Okanagan lake and started three new fires on the other side. Also, Canada has the biggest forest in the world from Atlantic to Pacific to Arctic. (technically Russia has more trees as it's significantly bigger, but it's broken up by human activity.) So in Canada, unlike on a Greek island say, there is always more forest, always more fuel. There's a lot more and I'm no expert, just a Canadian. My father was a wildfire look out in British Columbia when it was still done by men in look out towers instead of satellites and thermal imaging. These new fires are different, fire behaviour is changing and they are becoming increasingly impossible to contain and extinguish. They've been fighting the Yellowknife fire for a month and it just blew through every fire guard, retardant line, back burn, fire break, palm sprinkler, and they're fighting it with fleets of air tankers and an army of firefighters. That monster is still advancing on Yellowknife which has been mostly evacuated. If this seems mindboggling to you, it's mindboggling to us too even though we're used to wildfires. This is just insane.

The Okanagan's hot, sunny, dry climate is classified as semi-arid, with the lowest average annual precipitation in southern Canada.❤ The topography of the area treed ridges, mountains make it very difficult to fight wildfires. Winds through the Valleys create a chimney effect with wildfire travelling up the ridges. If the fire is large enough and intense enough, it can create its own weather patterns. Infrastructure is also lacking. Dry conditions, trees and brush ( fuel) fanned by high winds create these conditions. The Kelowna area has become overdeveloped, with housing on ridges, outcrops. The Kelowna area has also become overpopulated - its unsustainable.

The recipe for wildfire here in BC is 30/30/30. That is 30°C, 30%humidity, 30km/hr wind. At that point you just need a spark. 100’s of lightning strikes, a few low IQ smokers as well and all of those 30’s met and well exceeded.

Anyone educated enough to know how long its been since Canada built new water bombers? Fire fighting equipment and prevention isn't at the top of the priority list here. Our federal government would rather watch it burn and then tell us we need to buy an electric car to reduce our carbon footprint. Any fires north of Kapuskasing in my province of Ontario are left to burn, they call it (under observation) idiots. Most countries in the world could fit inside our province, with few roads in the northern portion ,thus the need for water bombers across our country. A major environmental economic loss for any region affected by wild fires. Angry you bet, but that's what happens when you have an incompetent elected government like ours. Canadians need to wake up, this wasn't the first time our forests have burned.

Fires could ignite anywhere, between the Pacific, Atlantic and Arctic Oceans from lightning, power lines/infrastructure, or human negligence. The flames create their own weather, extending into the lower stratosphere, with even fire tornados. And the fire goes underground, and burns through roots and organic matter, then emerges somewhere new. It can do this through the winter, and resume burning in spring. The key is to prevent the forests from drying, by stopping the increase in solar forcing that occurs as a result of atmospheric carbon emissions.

Coniferous forest, aka turpentine bombs, permitted to establish itself in town is done with the full realization that nature is going to take its usual course and consume aging trees with fire in order to make way for new growth, as it has been doing since the beginning of time. A town should not have trees to the extent where they form a virtual grove contiguous with wild forest. There are some that greatly resent the use of a land by citizens that was not promised to them and seek office to curb this practice. Forest on it may not be disturbed no matter how great a hazard it poses to habitations. The detrimental effects of placing a halt to the use of land are homes consumed by fire, home prices that skyrocket beyond reach, rents that exceed incomes and homelessness.

None of the more than 100 million acres of forest in Canada may be cleared-from a land that was not promised to them-in order to shield a town from ready-to-ignite trees. Any councilor that proposes that these be removed to create fields that surround and protect the town is deemed a _denier._ Their career is ruined. A generation is in place that renounces Christianity, _a Godly faith_ and that refutes the _Immaculate Conception,_ but pays obeisance to the Cremation Cult, _a Satanic Creed_ whose _Inquisition_ does not permit the veracity of _Immaculate Cremation_ to be denied.
