The thing is that for the NHL the Olympics are at THE WORST TIME IN THE SEASON. SInce the Olympics are in February that is the typical start of the playoff push. Now I actually like the pros in the olympics. However I understand why the NHL brass are bucking. Consider it from THEIR POSITION. Lets say YOU ARE A FIFTH PLACE TEAM IN YOUR DIVISION IN FEBRUARY BUT YOU'RE ONLY SIX POINT OUT. GREAT! YOU HAVE A CHANCE TO MAKE THE PLAYOFF! BUT WAIT! ITS AN OLYMPIC YEAR! SO YOUR BEST PLAYERS ARE NOW GONE FOR TWO WEEKS TO DO THE OLYMPICS! ALL OF A SUDDEN YOU COULD GO FROM A SIX POINT PLAYOFF TO A MAX OF 12-16 POINTS OUT AND NOW THE LIKELIHOOD OF MAKING THE PLAYOFFS IS VERY MUCH DIMINISHED. and before all yall hate on me by saying they should just take a break for the Olympics.. YEAH EXCEPT FOR THE FACT THAT IF THERE ARE NO GAMES IN 2 WEEKS DUE TO OLYMPICS THE SEASON GOES TO NEARLY JULY!

Olympics got me to watch hockey again. I still considered myself a Leafs fan but I didn't watch many games between the 2004 lockout and the 2010 Olympics. Then I remembered how fun hockey was and became way more invested again - not just in the Leafs, but for the first time in other teams as well. I haven't missed a Leafs game since December 2013. Both events please. With the Olympics around, the World Cup can afford to be more "silly" too. I loved NA so much... People actually watch the Olympics. There were a lot of people who didn't even know this event was a thing.
@Hicksy8107 жыл бұрын
I'm a big hockey fan in England and you're absolutely right with what you said about the Olympics. I know a load of people who have no interest in hockey that got really into it during the Sochi games. Everyone seemed to suddenly know who Alex Ovechkin was and were wondering whether he could win Russia a home Olympic gold. It was great. Take all those superstars out and Olympic hockey garners a similar lack of interest as hockey has in general this side of the pond. And as you say, that's not going to sell it to any potential new fans who in turn may become new customers. I mean, even if sending players to the Olympics does cost the league a bit of money, 1) it's only once every 4 years and 2) it's not like Gary Bettman and co are going to go skint and have to move back in with their parents. They're loaded, surely they can take what, to them, is a tiny hit, in order to try and advertise the game to the world.

I also got introduced to hockey by the 2014 Olympics. Before that I'd never even seen a hockey game, but now I often stay up till 4 am to watch my favorite team play. The World Cup can't replace the Olympics, because most people that watched the World Cup already love hockey. The Olympics bring together both old and new fans of the game.
@ebk62917 жыл бұрын
Watching the hockey in the 2014 Sochi winter Olympics is the reason I fell in love with the sport! Coming from Australia I only knew about hockey threw movies (The Mighty Ducks and Miracle) and what I learned from my big brother who actually follows and understand the rules. So after watching the 2014 Olympics and supporting Canada I was hooked!! I got a NHL subscription, follow a team and the rest is well...history!
@drevyek17857 жыл бұрын
The world cup is not enough to replace the Olympics. The Olympics is so powerful, that it makes curling one of the most popular sports in the states. There isn't really anything like it, and the NHL would be silly to skip it. That said, the fact that the IOC won't pay for the insurance of the athletes is a joke. I don't blame the NHL for being upset- it's a lot of money they could be losing. Hell, the players/NHLPA should be advocating for it too- they could lose a lot of money themselves (think Seidenberg, before he got his contract- dangerous games might mean no contract, and no job). A deal must be hashed out- maybe not full insurance, but at least *something*.

I went to game one (team Canada vs team Czech Republic) and it was absolutely amazing! It was my first hockey game and something I will never forget since I'm a huge team Canada fan. I really enjoyed the world cup but I love the Olympics more only because I've been watching since Vancouver 2010 and I didn't know what the world cup was until last fall. I really hope the nhl let's the players play in the 2018 winter Olympics because if they don't I'll be really upset. Team Canada vs Team Europe was so intense I was losing hope that we wouldn't win but thank God we did! Team Canada never disappoints me. I feel like both Crosby and Marchand deserved to be MVP'S the Crosby line was on fire throughout the entire tournament I was so impressed.
@jennifere.2597 жыл бұрын
the only one I see challenging Crosby for MVP is Price. Marchand was fan-frickin-tastic this tourney, but most of those goals, those plays, NEVER happen without Crosby. There's a reason he's the best in the world. And what a line. Wow.
@sks_88457 жыл бұрын
Steve, you nailed the formats. The world cup should be held alongside the olympics every 4 yrs, staggered 2 yrs apart. Olympics carry significance beyond any 'tournament' which is why in soccer you have olympic soccer and world cup soccer - both of which get fans jacked. Hockey should follow suit. As for Team Europe vs. Team Canada in the final 2 games - Canada is lucky Team Europe didn't win the last game. If Europe won the WCH, I think we'd all be singing a different tune about the fallout of the success or failure of the tournament. If Europe won it would be a reflection that maybe Canada isn't as good as we think it is. In Canada, we're getting spoiled with success and taking these victories for granted - USA, Sweden, Russia, Europe, Team N.A., CZ, tried hard and would have LOVED to win this tourny and stick it in our faces on home soil - believe me. Europe stifled us and figured out how to play against us, we're lucky game 2 ended the way it did.

The WCH cannot replace the Olympics. If it came down to choosing one of them, you go with the Olympics since you get much greater exposure for the sport as a whole. Those two ladies from Cardiff are proof enough of that. I'm going to the Leafs home opener with a friend October 15th. It will be nothing short of epic.

I am just now entering my second hockey season. World Cup was really fun and I was pumped for it as soon as it was announced. Being a Pens fan my summer was really short hockey wise, but without WCH it would have felt miserable. I hope they keep it AND go to the Olympics on the schedule you mentioned. I mean it's frustrating that Seguin is out for the Stars right now, but this tournament had me pumped and excited for the season to actually start. I am torn about the MVP decision. Crosby is BAE, but Marchand was clutch. However, Sid had something to do with just about every great Canada play SOOOO.

I agree, I think they should do both. Personally I think the World Cup was great and I enjoyed it (but I mean I usually feel that way regardless of what hockey is on, like I get excited for preseason games so I mean probably shouldn't comment much.) Even managed to snatch tickets to a couple of games but it simply can't replace the Olympics. There's nothing wrong with keeping both, especially when this tournament was "meant to grow the sport" like the NHL keeps insisting. You can't grow a sport by hording. Both should be great, and there's nothing wrong with so much hockey. I hope they do it again and I hope it stays in Toronto so I can snatch even more tickets for more games lol

In 1999 I watched a game in anaheim between ducks and sabres and for the first and only time in my life I saw Domink Hasek live, and it was like watching one of my heroes play. I really relate to the england girls, if I could I would go anywhere just to watch him or CUJO play. The first and only time I wento to TO the HHOF was the most meaninful place I visited and I bet I was one of the few brazilians to really know what that place means. The current problem with the Olympics is that the IOC doesn't want to pay for the insurances and travel (which is weird as they make huge money off the hockey games). If it's going to stick that way, the NHL and the IIHF should host a joint World Championship to keep both parts happy. - Host it every second year (with every second tournament being in North America) - Split the revenue somewhat fair - Have some qualification system (just like the Olympics) for the teams. Maybe not all (top 6 could get a direct spot), but to have it interesting and to keep it fair for the lower IIHF divisions I'm pretty sure that the revenue would be higher, at least for the IIHF, and the NHL would basically get free money making NHL players available and MAYBE host it during the season.

it works in football (soccer for north americans) in europe: we got the worldcup all 4 years and the european cup in all 4 years in between and everybody is pumped for both tournaments.. the wcoh was a nice thing - and imo for ppl who watched hockey/the nhl before a great opportunity to shorten the time to nhl puckdrop.. those "who didn't give a fuck about hockey" in europe won't do now either - the starting times were pretty much like in the nhl and only hardcore fans will wait until 1am for a puckdrop if they really want to do this to raise the intereset in hockey outside of canada, usa and the other usual suspects you'll have to do this tournament there.. maybe in france or another country that has the hockey infrastructure but not the attention

I feel like having a "Team Europe" & "Team North America" (while it's a fun idea and was one of the highlight of the tournament) made this tournament feel very gimmicky and not very serious. Even not looking at the money side of things, I can't imagine how demoralizing for players it would be if the NHL said they couldn't participate in the Olympics. So many players grow up wanting to the honor to play for their country on the biggest stage, that's not something the NHL has the right to take away from them, especially since the World Cup is *not* on the same level...

I'm fine with Crosby getting MVP, but I would have been happy if Price got it, or even Marchand (and trust me, it hurts me terribly to say that). Steve, in my opinion, there is an easy solution to the "blue jays" problem. Put the world cup in smaller hockey markets, such as Columbus Ohio, where there aren't other sports. I still don't understand why people think Europe shouldn't be a team. If all the players on Team Europe played for their countries, they would literally have 0 chance of winning the tournament, because there simply isn't enough talent in their respective countries. Grouping them into one team allows them to be more competitive. It gives players like Anze Kopitar, Frederik Anderson, Zdeno Chara, Roman Josi, etc. a good chance to actually win something, because they'd never win with their country.

As someone who grew up following soccer and just started getting the hold of ice hockey, I really don't get why the NHL WOULDN'T want to invest in the World Cup. I mean, take soccer. Not only do they have their World Cup, they have the Olympics as well. Then, there's the continental tournaments - Europe (UEFA) has the Euros, South America (CONMEBOL) has the Copa America (which just had two editions in back to back years....on the same year the Olympics had their World Cup), so on and so forth with the other four continental Confederations -. The trick? And this might save everybody some heartburn regarding the Team Europe/Team NorthAm: do what the IOC does with soccer in the first place: HOST THE FRIGGIN UNDER 23 WORLD CUP AND LET THE NHL ORGANIZE THE BIG SHOW!! ...But if and only if NHL is able to assemble a tournament worth forking over. Eight teams is barely a competition, when two of the partakers are made up - literally - and three are miles ahead of the competition. Sure the Czechs, the Swedes and the Fins can deke and what not, but who would you put your money on: them, or Canada, the US or Russia? Anyhow, cheers from Venezuela and go Leafs!
@sparkleytangerine7 жыл бұрын
I really enjoyed the World Cup but I have to admit my excitement for Games like Finland versus Russia was pretty much dampened by the MOST RIDICULOUS RULE IN THE ENTIRE THING where TNA couldn't progress because Team Russia won their game. It should have been a goal differential. I would have missed work and probably sold a limb to see Team Canada versus Team North America. I live in Toronto but I didn't go to a single game because before the huge jump down in prices, the tickets were priced at "sell a vital organ and hope for the best". I would have needed to plan two weeks ahead to go to the game because of my work schedule. Had the tickets been this low from the get-go, I'd have probably gone to a few. I did buy that TNA hat because that entire design is just 🔥🔥🔥. Crosby winning MVP makes sense when you look at the team play as a whole, his scoring and assist accomplishments and just his game play but Team Canada was full of amazing players. Marchand would have been a great choice as would have Carey Price or even Toews and his line for their penalty kills. Unfortunately it could only go to one person but Sidney Crosby wasn't undeserving.

The World Cup was awesome. Good parts of it were more exciting than the Olympics. Too bad the Americans and Russians didn't have their game on. Interesting to note: some of the best games were in the pre-tournament. Both Canadian-American games were epic. By the time the tournament started, it was already decided. Canada showed it was the better team. The actual tournament game between the two teams was lacklustre. I think what this shows is that the organizers have to do a better job keeping the players hungry and motivated. Not sure what this all involves. No back-to-back nights for any of the teams would be start. Team North America and Europe were a success. Two Canadians teams? Or, countries can enter as many teams as they like? Or, organizers from where ever can put together teams? The Pittsburg Penguins versus Russia. Awesome!

The World Cup was enjoyable because it was hockey featuring the top players, but it does not have the prestige of the Olympics. Just because something is second best, doesn't mean it should disappear. The NHL should continue to do both, as you suggested, but it appears that foolishly they are giving up on the Olympics.

Easily brad Marchand. They just gave it to Crosby because why not. As mike Babcock would say "he wanted to win MVP so he got MVP even though he didn't deserve MVP he got MVP"

Let's be real here, Marchand should've been the MVP. (Or Halak, for punching K*ne in the dick.)

One problem with world cup was with Canada being such a huge favorite to win and since it is held so inconsistently it just felt like it's just a made up tournament so that Canada can lift some cup. I just didn't feel like there was any stakes there...

The raising of the flag almost looks like they are retiring Canada's jersey number. (Now no one can play with a Canadian jersey again!)

The World Cup was exciting to watch since it was hockey and Canada was playing... but I do have to say the Olympics has at least 10x more appeal for both the fans and the players. A player losing in the World Cup isn't devastated the same way as they would if they lost the Olympics, and a player winning the World Cup isnt near as joyous as those winning the Olympics. The Olympics is truly proving in front of the WHOLE WORLD that you are the king of hockey. The World Cup proved to Canadians... and some Americans that they are the king of hockey. It would not be fair to fans to prohibit the NHL players from the Olympics. Russia would sweep the Gold away due to their realm of KHL players that would be playing. As a 16 year old fan, my greatest memory of International hockey is the Golden Goal in 2010 in Vancouver and this World Cup did not seem to have near as excitement and intensity as those games. I agree that keeping both the World Cup and Olympics would be great and would grow the sport greatly!

It seems like Canada hosts a majority of major hockey tournaments. I understand it makes sense, but as a non-Canadian it is somewhat annoying. USA next World Cup host, every ticket holder gets a free cup of grit, eh? :)---:(
