6 seasons later, Matthews has 54 goals with 12 games remaining. John Tavares is a Leaf and the new Captain. Matthews and Marner are debatably the best duo in the NHL. We had a 3-1 SERIES LEAD, and blew it in the first round. We got a new goalie who is an All-Star. Got Mark Giordano, Wayne Simmons, Jason Spezza and a young guy from the Arizona Coyotes named Michael Bunting who is like Wayne Simmons and sets both Matthews and Marner up. None of them have the heart required to win in the playoffs. They are not going to win anything with that "top 4". You all need to accept that. Go on, tell me how all star their new goalie is. Which new goalie was that? Giordano is old and done. Simmons is a press box filler. Spezza is retired. And Bunting helps the team more when he is out of the lineup than when he is in. 5 years later, if this is the best that Matthews and company have, the Leaves are far fricking away from winning a cup. The top 4 Matthews, Nylander, Marner, and Tavares have NO playoff heart. To have any real success in the playoffs the Leaves are going to have to part with at least 2 of those players. Year after year they have proved that they have no playoff heart. Regular season, absolutely. Regular season when everything is easy, and the refs call everything. No heart when the going gets tough.

Sure they are down 2-0, but have absolutely showed that they could have won each of those last two. Further, they did incredibly well on the road in Tampa. Don’t count them out. 2. I want the leafs to win, but will not be overly upset if they lose. I’m used to their losing, but I also am satisfied with their progress this season. 19 years is a long time, so I’m actually happy with their season even if they don’t make it all the way. Winning the cup is a lengthy process and this season has been a stepping stone in that. You saying to “be happy with that” is entirely reflective of my mindset. You were the one who came back to a 4 year old comment on my excitement for the future of this team. Not only was that excitement correct in the moment, but it stands and you wont kill it.

They got manhandled, that's why there is anger towards the Bennett and Tkachuk right now. Their top 4, including Tavares, Marner, Matthews, and Nylander have been invisible so far in this round. Not one of them has stepped up. Whether you want to hear it or not, all 4 of those players are soft. Not a single one is going to put the Leafs on their back and carry them. They never have in the playoffs. Great regular season players sure, but not playoff performers. The Leafs are not going to go far in the playoffs with them. That is why this was the first 2nd round in almost 20 years. It didn't happen 5, 4 or even 3 years ago with those same players. If the same lack of success continues next year do not be surprised if Matthews walks. If he does, the Leafs are in huge trouble. That is when the downhill slide will begin. They are going to be out of this years playoffs in 3 games, 4 if they are lucky. Be a fan all you like, but open your eyes and accept that that roster doesn't have what it takes to go far in the playoffs. They need to make big changes, not tinker around the edges.

The Leafs at center are like what the Caps could’ve had as their top six if McPhoe didn’t trade Forsberg. They wouldn’t have needed to draft Vrana (since they already have their young star right wing), and could’ve used that pick (13th) to draft Dylan Larkin, making a top six of Ovi-Backstrom, Forsberg-Kuznetsov, and potentially, Burakovsky-Larkin.
