the high visible patches on the navy jacket is (according to the navy) is for when you are on deck in fog or get washed over board (never tried it and never well)

I've got four of these...3 air force, 1 army. To see the water resistant membrane, pull the hood out of it's compartment. The bottom of that compartment has a small ventilation opening. Look in there and you can see the membrane between the shell and the lining. You can even pull some of that membrane out through the ventilation hole and hold it in your hand.

Accidentally found one yesterday for 50$ almost new; perfect for working on the land in the winter with a mid layer. Simple waterproofing: spray 2 coats of Jigaloo and there you go.

Some added history for you regarding the Air Force blue Jacket. I was ( and still am ) in, when the "system" came out and was specifically designed for 500 series trades (aircraft technicians). The jacket you reviewed i "believe" was the rain Jacket, as there was a heavier parka that came out with the system. The secondary pockets on the loser pockets was lined to aid in warming hands when working on flight lines during cold weather when working on aircraft outside. There were also 2 sets on "bib style coveralls that were in the complete system, one rain set and one cold weather set. The whole system could be worn in layers , rain underneath the cold, to provide extreme cold weather protection during flight line operations, such as adjusting aircraft engines in -30 Deg C weather (think Twin Huey and under the rotor wash). I hope this give you some added information regarding kit.

"Go outside. KZbin will still be here when you get back." Love it!! Another great video, Tell. Hope to get out with Oshawa Bushcraft in the spring/winter/after January! Loving this extreme climate '82 sleeping system, and will get in touch soon. Hopefully you still have rain gear left that would fit me? Be good, budd!!

Nice review,I have had all three at one time still have the army one ,it’s like you said not warm at all but good with a sweater ,great style jacket with the pockets very British like , I’m not a fan of the hood at all I find its position let’s water in sometimes,but they are very good for outdoor activitys,

This 'Murrican wants one of the army variants. It sounds like it was intended as an outer protective shell, with inner layers for warmth. I'm actually wearing a British Army Gore-Tex parka that is an excellent mild weather jacket by itself (it's actually a bit small for me, so layering under this garment would get crowded quickly). Still, with all the pockets and their placement, your Canadian parka sounds like something I'd enjoy and find useful as a work coat. PLUS, the wannabe in me likes good, solid milsurp gear!

I have one of these but don’t wear it much. I prefer the older 3 season with the corduroy collar. Classic Canadian style you wear it with a hoodie underneath lol. I have found a puffy jacket under my 3 season works well as it protects the warmer layer while providing pockets

A water resistant over jacket is key for keeping the wind out and warmth in. This is the most important of my clothing. I can wear it from earlier fall to late spring as a rain jacket, adding layers as needed. For layers i use a hooded sweater and scarves. 2 scarves in -30 and below. One over month and noise and the other to fill in zipper and hood gaps. Please don't underestimate the value of T-shirts. I wear extra, witch i can use for layers and wash, bath towels. Just use extra T-shirts for towels and wrapping if needed. In a pinch i can use T-shirts as scarves. First rule pack for any weather. A light water resistant jack, hooded sweater and T-shirts, jeans, light sweat pants. Is good from hot to cold extremes.

Wore one or these before being issued the current vortex Cadpat, they are a decent dry weather for mild fall of spring temps , but they are by no means water proof or water repellent , not very warm either. Lots of pockets, good zippers and pretty durable though.

Im given to understand the new canpat came from these. Wasnt a lot of difference when they were issued that I remember. They were very popular after the old corduroy/ demin jackets and were great moderate weather jackets. This and a fleecey were the cats ass in the field as you could go up/ down for layers easily.

How are they for sparks around the camp fire, and water resistance? And thanks for these reviews. Sadly I don't think there is a single decent army surplus store in all of montréal since the last one closed recently after 50 years of service. It was an awesome one too. So now I can only mail order, and these show me what to get and what not,
@OshawaBushcraft
@OshawaBushcraft 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim. I haven't had any problems with sparks or melted cuffs from getting to close to the fire. I assume the army needed it to be atleast slightly fire retardant. They are not particularly water resistant if they haven't been treated with something.
@jimf1964
@jimf1964 3 жыл бұрын
OshawaBushcraft lol, yeah, I guess military gear that can't even take a spark wouldn't be the best choice. The weight is a little much for something uninsulated and not water proof, but like you said, probably make an awesome work coat.

Is it “stolen” valour to wear military jackets if you aren’t in military because there fairly cheap and good quality for bushcraft?

It is an offence under Sections 419 A and B of the Criminal Code of Canada for anyone, other than the recipient, to wear a uniform of the Canadian Armed Forces or Service Insignia, such as medals, ribbons, badges, chevrons or other decoration. Ive never heard of anyone being charged over a jacket.
