Hey guys, this is one example of prices you'd encounter at a Canadian grocery store nowadays. Certainly not cheap and prices continue to increase.
What do you think about our prices? If you're from another country, how do they compare?

We left Canada three years and a half years ago. Taxes are obscene, housing is insane, living costs are absolutely crazy. Canada is charging five star prices for a three star hotel. Not worth it anymore. I hope Canada can regain it's former glory....it's going to take a decade to even see some improvements.

Isn't that what Canada wanted? A Socialist utopia? I mean... Canada is getting exactly what they voted for. You actually thought taxing the rich would cause the rich to pay their fair share? Instead the rich just rolled the taxes into their products... thus making the people relying on the government even more ... more assistance... more votes.

Some of these prices are similar to Australia where prices went up a lot around 2021-2022. Some eg. butter, eggs seem a bit more in Canada. Both Australia and Canada seem to be following a similar economic model based around bringing in millions of immigrants when there is not enough housing to benefit corporate oligopoly.

I personally think that issue with prices is greed. If I can import something from USA, pay postage, GST and save 40-50% then purchasing in my local store in Australia... How the hell Costco, who has only few petrol stations in Australia, can constantly sale their petrol 20-40 cents per litre cheaper then Woolworths or Coles who have petrol stations on every corner? Immigration is not problem, Australians are not going to be hungry. Apparently Queensland itself produces enough food for 100 million people. Often you hear on TV eg. Cherrys are overabundant and then you go to shop and they charge 20$ per kg. People,do yourselves favours and stop getting your shopping at supermarkets. Do business at smaller shops,and shop around. You can get 5kg of potatoes for 5$ or you can get 2kg French fries for 12$+ Yeah, require bit work,but you can invest in commercial grade French fries cutting machine that will last forever and will pay itself in few months.

@@uggguuuuu plus they get to charge you 15% sales tax on that junk food too. Did you know, if you buy a box of granola bars, that are 5 bars or less, you pay 15% sales tax. If you buy a box with more inside you don't pay the tax. Mind you, it's something along the lines of 5 bars or less. Not sure of the exact number. Doesn't make sense, eh? We shouldn't be paying tax on any food, including so-called junk food. Food is food. Go to an undeveloped country and tell them that certain kinds of food is junk. When the GST was introduced I was just a young kid. We were told that it would not affect food, clothing, and other essentials. Then they slowly started taxing us on it as the years went by. Carbon tax? That's a way for them to tax the rest of the food that they can't get away with calling junk food. So in other words, it's the tax on veggies and fruits, meats and dairy. As far as you know it, carbon tax. It's the farmers paying into it, thus that price being passed onto us.

As a Canadian, I can confirm most of this. It's not a complete monopoly. You can shop at Costco, Walmart and other discounted places. Eggs you can get on sale 18 for $4.99. It's Sep 16th and 27 degrees out, so it was just a cool snap for a couple days there when he was taping. It's been milder lately over the years. But yes in the past 2 years food prices have escalated but you can find deals if you look. Some places even do price matching. He also wasn't shopping with a flyer, so he missed out on deals. You can't buy food at regular price, it's a rip-off.

The situation is similar here. When you adjust the prices it’s not that much different at a regular grocery store in the US for many items. Krogers is the largest owner of grocery stores in the US although they aren’t all called Krogers. We shop mostly at Aldi which is definitely cheaper than Krogers but about the same as Walmart and Target which are also major sellers of groceries. By the way the color of eggs has nothing to do with nutritional value. What may matter is how the chickens are raised. Food quality, space etc.

I can confirm those prices are accurate and a true representation of what things cost. Yes, you can choose cheaper quality and brands for some of the items at a cheaper supermarket but, the bread, milk and butter prices are pretty much the same(or very close )across all supermarkets ( unless you get them on sale). But I main reason I buy this Almond Milk is because it has no sugar. I wish they could make regular milk have less sugar for people who have diabetes; that is the main reason I buy this Almond milk. Prices south of the border vary by region. Some markets, like NY, are insanely competitive and this is reflected in the prices. You can easily get that package of chicken breasts for $6 to $8. That box of pasta costs half. Apples also cost half, especially with them in season. Even somewhere like D.C. where prices can be insane, they're not nearly this bad.

Grocery shopping as a single person you have to get creative, buy items you can freeze since lots of produce is difficult to eat fast enough before they go bad. $100 won't get you much groceries. What's sad is that the Dollar Stores used to also be a good option to buy some food, not anymore.

I'll also add that in the supermarket a few minutes from our Philippine condo my wife and I spend probably about $500.00 Canadian per month for groceries, and I pick up items I couldn't afford in Canada every week such as roast beef and steaks (I get 3 nice size Ribeyes for around 600 pesos, ... about $15.00) and if we go to KFC or Wendy's the two of us have a meal for around $12.00 just as an example. Fortunately I chose a city that has everything I could hope for as a Canadian. Once we pay off our condo (a small studio style in a resort type setting) we should be able to live easily on around a thousand to twelve hundred Canadian dollars a month.

Some of your food is cheaper in GTA than it is here in Quebec. Your bag milk is about two dollars cheaper than where I live, and I live where they make the milk. 😂 I've also noticed that certain kinds of food fluctuates between regions. Don't forget to add the 15% tax you paid on that bag of chips, and the gas you put in your car to get to the grocery store. We're not counting the extra few cents they charge for carbon tax per litre. Oh, and the 15% tax you paid when you bought your car. And think about it, most meat sold in Canada is locally grown. The prices are ridiculous. You do a very good price comparison btw. Your channel should have more views.

Russian supermarkets are full of food stolen from Ukraine. And Russia doesn't have distributors and suppliers and they don't pay farmers for the goods being sold. In Canada, produce, chicken, beef all comes from local farmers who are paid a fair price for their food so it's why we pay a bit more. Climate change has also been affecting crops so farmers have been charging suppliers and stores more for their food so the stores have to slightly increase prices for us. It's called mark up. Also not to mention rubles are worth literally nothing in Canadian dollars.

I have never considered Fortinos to be middle or upper middle class. Fortinos is known to be one of the expensive stores. Upper middle class is the regular Loblaws stores. Fortinos is upper middle class. I don’t think you can group it in the same category as high class stores such as McEwan, Bruno’s, Pusateri’s, Whole Foods, etc. Price-wise, unless there is a good sale somewhere, retail pricing is similar to most other stores such as NoFrills, Walmart, etc.
@Thejazzerc
@Thejazzerc 14 күн бұрын
@KouroshKamyabi I wouldn't compare sale prices at Walmart/No Frills/Food Basics/ Frescho prices to a sale at Fortinos. It's still quite a significant difference. I stopped Instacarting this year, and I honestly notice who purchases what in each store. Fortinos, you guarantee that these will go to a massive house in a super rich area. While it is as expensive as McEwens and I have shopped for customers there, it is a little misleading to show prices at Fortinos bc most people will not shop at Fortinos and people will tend to shop at the cheaper stores to reflect the true prices of what most Canadians pay.

Olive oil, need to check as 80% are fake or blended. If you didn't include the Epson salts, tomatoes, hummus and kifir, the bill would have been at least CAD 25 cheaper.
