Recorded on May 8th and 9th, between Chicago, Illinois, and Davenport, Iowa.
One of the biggest railroad company mergers in the last few decades, the Canadian Pacific railway merged with the Kansas City Southern and KCS De Mexico to form a massive 3 country spanning railway system. In celebration of this achievement, the Canadian Pacific restored a H-1b 4-6-4 Hudson class steam locomotive, #2816, also known as "The Empress," to head the railroads "Final Spike Steam Tour" through the 3 countries that the newly formed CPKC railroad now serves.
The tour dates were announced, with several stops in Canada, the United States, and Mexico, and one of the most unique routes was the short leg between Chicago, Illinois, to Davenport, Iowa. A chase ensued with several railfans in pursuit of The Empress as the 4-6-4 did what it did best and hurried its train across the Midwest. With many locals coming out at the tour date locations and also trackside to see the 4-6-4 thunder past.
In tow with the 2816, are two Canadian Pacific EMD F9PA F-units, 1401 and 1407, a nice addition to the gleaming colors of 2816.
Canadian Pacific 2816 was built in 1930 by the Montreal Locomotive Works and is a H-1b 4-6-4 Hudson class steam locomotive. It was the second production run of the Hudson class engines for the Canadian Pacific Railway. Used for Canadian Pacific's premier passenger service before being reassigned to commuter service between Winnipeg and Fort William, Ontario. 2816 was later retired in May of 1960, with the locomotive being sold to Steamtown, Pennsylvania. In late 1990s, the Canadian Pacific Railway bought 2816 back from Steamtown and the locomotive received a complete rebuild. Operating several steam excursions from 2001 to 2012, 2816 was put into storage until pulled back out in 2020 for tests and evaluations. Finally in 2023, the newly formed CPKC, announced that 2816 was to lead the "Final Spike Steam Tour," marking the first time a steam locomotive was to travel between Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
