When I was a kid about 70 years ago the 'white sticks' actually had a red tip and were actually called 'candy cigarettes'. It was only after the anti-smoking campaign started that they stopped calling them this. We also were able to buy 'candy tobacco'. Long strings of coconut covered in cocoa powder and sugar.

In the UK they were called sweet cigarettes and came in a pack that looked like a pack of 10 cigarettes, even had a 'cigarette card' inside. There was also chewing gum ones wrapped in a 'cigarette' paper. The good old days when PC was a copper and Health & Safety didn't exist. Just common sense.

Those candy sticks that Canadian bairns pretended were cigarettes? When I was a wee laddie, many, many years ago in Scotland they were actually marketed as 'sweet cigarettes'! They even had one end dyed red for the full effect. It seemed perfectly normal at the time... Edited just to say that I literally burst out laughing when you discovered the liquid in the camel bollock. Always worth watching an Adventures and Naps video right to the end- that's where the good tuff is!

Hi Alana, Thanks for another entertaining video. The blue raspberry rip roll reminds me of a candy I had when I was a kid called Fruit by the Foot. But if I remember correctly, I think it came in a plastic tape dispenser so it wouldn’t accidentally unroll into a big mess. I also ate Fruit Roll Ups as well. They unrolled into a sheet with perforated shapes like stars on it, that you would pull out from the sheet and eat, then you would be left with a stencil that you could use to draw shapes with, or just eat it. I always just ate it and I didn’t know anyone who actually used it as a stencil even though it was advertised on tv for that use.

I keep imagining the marketing meeting. They’re all sitting around the boardroom table and the Marketing Director says “we need a new product for next March’s pre-Spring sales push. Who’s got ideas.” Everyone tosses in boring safe thoughts that don’t get anyone excited but no one gets sacked either. Then Damien, who joined the company only 5 months ago says “what about small brown wrinkled ball-shaped things with a disgusting tasting liquid inside a hard outer shell that you only get once you’ve been sucking them for 3 minutes. Let’s call them Camel Balls and shape them like they are camel testicles and have two in a pack”. Can you imagine the stunned silence then? Then everyone starts saying what a good idea and the idea takes off.

@@shirleyz7400 there’s another marketing meeting I always chuckle when I imagine it. Drummers will know the stuff. It’s a sticky substance they put on their hands so in the heat of a fast song and the humidity of a crowded club their drumsticks don’t fly from their hand, zoom across the crowded dance floor and take someone’s eye out So the team are trying to develop a marketing plan for this substance. They are suggesting names for this stuff There are half a dozen bottles on the table and again everyone is suggesting boring but safe names that don’t excite anyone Suddenly, out of the blue, young Damien comes up with the name that’s now world famous in the music business. This is absolutely true folks, it’s an essential part of a rock”n”roll drummer’s equipment. Damien says “I know! Let’s call it ‘Gorilla Snot’!”

Speaking of vintage A+N I remember the one with the Moose Juice, now you've moved up to camel ball liquid. God bless Alanna's taste tests 😁

Oh my! I'm crying laughing at your "Camel Balls" reaction! I could think of a number of highly inappropriate comments here, but it's probably best if I don't! Love your unique style - I've been here since the Scampi & Lemon NikNaks episode. Bit surprised that you haven't reprised the Double Decker taste test from back in the day. That's a particular favourite of mine! 🙂

In my day those candy sticks were called Sweet Cigarettes and the end was coloured red. You could also get Sweet Tobacco, Chocolate Cigars and Liquorice Pipes.

We had candy sticks with one end coloured red, like it had been lit, and they were called “Sweet cigarettes”. You would just have to imagine it being lit these days. 😆

@@nigelanscombe8658 yep, they were definitely called 'Sweet Cigarettes' with a red (lit end) tip, they didn't even have a fake filter......and then all of a sudden they were banned and after a while candy sticks appeared, all white, no tip.

You are very young but, when I was a kid the candy sticks were actually called sweet cigarettes and had a red colour on the end to show it was lit. I bought them for the free picture cards inside, usually of footballers.
