I’m an Aussie. You think playing music on the train is bad. I was once stuck on a train for 40 minutes and he played Tetris with the music on the entire time. I was humming that damn tune for several days.

I work in contact centres. In one place, we were barred from using negative language. At all. Ever. (Was this appallingly difficult? Yes.) They had to offer an exemption for "no worries". Being Americans, they hadn't realised that it's not negative and it's a habit of which most Australians cannot be broken.

Yes! I hate it when people play their music on public transport too. That and when they have a long phone chat on the mobile phone and think you want to hear the conversation. Can’t stand that.

Indigenous Australians usually don't make eye contact as direct eye contact is regarded as disrespectful. It is still a source of misunderstanding between indigenous and other Australians who are from different backgrounds.

You'll fit right in here, Mace. Especially the bit about burning in hell if you play music (from a phone with crap sound to boot!) on public transport! The eye contact thing is probably a thing, when I think about it. I know if someone's not making direct eye contact with me in a conversation, even someone I've just met, it doesn't give me a good feeling.

I've always thought of Australia and Canada as being very close in culturally as we're both former British colonies who were colonised within 200 years of each other, got independence very close to each other. The only difference is that you have the French cultural aspect. That we didn't as the French rocked up not long after the British got here and left as the British were a war with them.

Personal space is a product of the population density. People from crowded places tolerate less personal space. People from low density places expect more space. Years ago when dealing with a fellow from Japan, he picked up that I grew up in the country because of my tendency to expect extra space.

The rubbish and litter thing is very noticeable here in Australia now. We used to have a lot of public bins that have slowly disappeared and littering went up. So not condoning poor behaviour but the government has a hand in its cause by removing public bins.

I had a Maltese Girlfriend and at the parties they speak Maltese. I know a bit of Italian but I could not enter the conversation they are so fast I felt left out. When they speak English they are slow because the mind has to second guess. I don't hate it because I would know if they are talking about me.

@@geofftottenperthcoys9944 nah mate... you know one of the first jokes I heard in the 70's when I was a kid in Australia? Why do black people have paler palms? Because they were leaning up against cop cars when God spray painted them. No a joke is not just a joke when it comes from ignorant people. There are edgy comedians but they also have selective audiences.

If you are treated super politely in Australia & no one ever teases you, it means you're not liked. Teasing is done in good fun & to show you're accepted. There's a huge difference between good natured teasing and being verbally abused. 8:58
