You are absolutely correct Jared, learning the language of another country is the most direct path in learning their culture fast and and a much easier route to embrace and immerse one self to any culture. Have a nice stay and enjoy. You will find out that 2 weeks is too short of a stay plus you lost a day on your way here. Takes at least a week to somewhat acclimatize oneself to the weather.

The pinakbet is cook differently according to places. Manila way is stir fry with alamang(shrimp paste) with added squash , our ilocano way is stewed with lots of tomatoes and more variety of vegs so not bitter at all, the bitter melon is only the bitter part. I dont know the other provinces how they cook it.

Learning the languare is different to immersing yourself to the country. I'm a Filipino who moved to Canada for 20 years and I would say I speak English well but when I got here, I must say there are culture shocks. Enjoy your stay @jayyhartmann.

Brother, if you start feeling bored in Manila after a few weeks, consider going outside the city. Visit the beaches in Palawan, Cebu, Mindanao, and other destinations. If you are on a limited budget, you can explore Zambales and Pangasinan. Additionally, consider exploring the Ilocos region and Baguio for a change of scenery.

45:05 When an Indonesian speaks Tagalog in Manila area, people wouldn't get too surprised either coz the person looks Filipino and thus would kinda be expected to speak Tagalog (to the point that some Filipinos would probably initiate the conversation with that person or stranger in Tagalog). An Indonesian would have to explicitly say he/she is Indonesian. Even East Asians speaking it wouldn't be very surprising. That's probably a similar situation when Jared speaks German in Germany or Castilian (Spanish) in Spain or another Hispanophone country. Although maybe a European equivalent of such surprise (for very foreign person speaking the language) is in Eastern Europe, unlike for German or Castilian where they know lots of foreign folks learn the language or where there are lots of immigrants who learn the language. I suppose in Manila such a thing would not be as surprising as it would be in the provinces, esp if you hang out near international schools or business districts. It's also going to be a lot more surprising in Canada than in the Philippines, just coz there's a lot more reason to learn the language if you're living in or visiting the Philippines. About the Indonesian example, of course the person's attire shouldn't be too uniquely Indonesian. You may know that commercial about an American visiting France being recognizable as an American due to his attire, lol. But even then, Muslim Filipinos who have Islamic attire in Manila would likely still be approached in Tagalog. And historically speaking, an Indonesian historical figure, Tan Malaka, was able to disguise himself as Filipino in the Philippines in the 1920s just by being able to speak some English and some Tagalog (which he commented as definitely being easier to learn than English or German). If you see his picture esp when younger he literally looks like a Filipino. As he said "No one would doubt I was indeed what I seemed, a Filipino 'returning home'."
