Be nice too see CSA w47.2 aluminum test, using the proper filler and base material. And showing what happens when you do everything right, except the selection of the proper grade aluminum for the base metal.

Lol true. I know lots of "welders" that have unfortunately never done a bend test of their welds.
@Shah37Bang4 жыл бұрын
After the bend, if you have a crack that opens more than 3 mm it's a fail. I think you can even fail if it's exactly 3 mm too.
@mikeford9632 жыл бұрын
Those root coupons would have failed. That line that is visible from the filet joint side is the original plate material that didn't get properly penetrated into. You can see the he'd have lack of fusion from both the position of his bead in the stop/start visual check, and in the etching process that clearly showed a lack of nugget into that corner.
@wcmwfab9354 жыл бұрын
Rather do all 4 at once, so they can cool in between welds. Save time. At least 2 test at once. But what ever the weld inspector says goes.

If you have to do one of theses tests, find a place that machines off the backing plate(s). Other options for getting the backing plate off in order of least to most endangering your weld are grinding, zip-cutting, plasma, oxy torch (use a jig that’s a right triangle to be able to judge depth of cut) and carbon arc gouging.
@VortekXtiik4 жыл бұрын
Carbon arc the easiest, just look for the line and chase it out
@VortekXtiik3 жыл бұрын
What I would like to see someday is the CWB aluminum structural plate test CSA W47.2, i did some practise plates before and was wondering why my base metal was shitting itself before my weld did, I later learned that careful selection of the proper grade aluminum for the bend allowances of the jig was needed.
@KenyonPayne4 жыл бұрын
Good stuff! Just wondering what you used to cut the backing strip off?

It should be noted that this is just one method of qualification per CSA47.1. Successfully completing this plate yields a welder qualification for both fillets and grooves in the position in which it was completed (except for the flat groove/fillet plate which gives the welder a flat groove and horizontal fillet qualification). Alternatively, the welder may elect to use a v-groove test assembly which would only qualify them for groove welds in the position tested. The welder would would then have to complete a t-plate test assembly for each position to be qualified for fillets. This is differs from AWS where a groove test qualifies the welder for fillets as well. There are further test assemblies that welders may pursue, but for the most part would result in “non-transferable” qualifications. Lastly, when evaluating a gf test assembly, two root bends and one face bend are required. No macro-etches are required. And for all processes except GMAW, the test plate may be evaluated by radiography.
@derekcollins19724 жыл бұрын
Great info.But they also do radiography with gmaw.Bend test is usually the way due to cost.
@derekcollins19724 жыл бұрын
Great info.But they also can use radiography for gmaw.But almost always use a bend test due to cost.
@bman0414 жыл бұрын
Derek collins Clause 9.10.1.2 of CSA W47.1 allows for radiographic evaluation of welded test assemblies for all processes except GMAW. The same clause explicitly states that GMAW test plates must be evaluated by bend tests. This is due to the fine grain structure of the GMAW weld deposit, non fusion may not be visible when x-rayed. When evaluating test plates, typically the labour required to cut and bend test plates costs more then radiography at around 30 plates. But I do have shops that choose x-ray when evaluating as few as 6 plates. I’ve seen as as many as 10 plates shot at once,
@derekcollins19724 жыл бұрын
@@bman041 I've never heard of that and I'm a C.W.B supervisor.Good to know because we x ray gmaw welds.
@bman0414 жыл бұрын
Derek collins W59 allows for radiographic inspection of all processes, but W47.1 does not allow for the evaluation of GMAW test plates for welder qualifications using radiography. I spent 10 years as a CWB supervisor, for the last 3 years I’ve been a retained Welding Engineer for division 2 shops.

interesting, but what difference is there between my AWS certs and the CWB? the only things I saw were the inspection of the starts and stops plus a no bevel plate. also my 6g cert covers all the preceding positions... granted I did cert on 3g and 4g stick plus 5g pipe also 3g mig NR232 does the CWB have that one position covers all like the 6g? and when you talk about a buffer wheel do you mean a wire wheel to remove slag ? great vid, appreciate the info =)
@Mark-hf4rm4 жыл бұрын
Because this is structural welds, I don't think there is "one test" that covers all positions. That would be more so for tube/pipe welding. That is a different certificate in general. CWB doesn't allow you to weld on pressure tube/pipe, only structural. I am not familiar with the AWS certification and what it entails
@chrisingram97984 жыл бұрын
AWS allows an option for structural plate tests in 2g, either bevel both plates at 22.5 or bevel the top at 45 and leave the bottom plate square. Other than that a plate test is a plate test, the testing body can dictate root gaps and bevels, cleaning methods or the like to suit their needs.
@chrisingram97984 жыл бұрын
AWS is international, structural steel, aluminum, stainless, sheet and tubing as well as bridge and aerospace. AWS also is the only governing body to handle electrode and filler metal classification and specifications.
@aaronhobbs87164 жыл бұрын
madcap magician come to Canada and ur aws certs are not recognized. We dont do 6g tests on structural plate. Lol
@bman0414 жыл бұрын
Chris Ingram AWS is the American Welding Society and beyond Canada’s recognition of D1.6 for structural welding of Stainless Steel and D1.3 for gauge metal welding, AWS standards are not recognized internationally. As for electrode certification, there are certifications bodies all over the world (including Canada) of which the AWS certification is the least comprehensive. The generic “6010”, “7018”, or ER70S6 designations are now only used in the US.

When employers require CWB certification does it matter if it is done with stick or mig? I noticed most information on CWB testing demonstrates SMAW but I gather from the type of stuff many of these company's are producing it's MIG. They never seem to specify on their adds. Also, as far as bead placement and stop starts are the tests the same for GMAW and SMAW? It's been a while since I've welded and tested..
@pyro...59864 жыл бұрын
Apprentice for Canada here. We have different sets of tickets, SMAW and FCAW that are the most common. We need to take separate tests for each of the positions for these and yes the distance and gap is the same asides from horizontal. Horizontal has a tighter gap but asides from that it's pretty much all the same. Hopefully that helped!

Oh this is good. Journeyman welder from British Columbia, Canada here. How is it that I can do my CWB test in a shop that I worked in, and have a carpenter next to me do the same test and we both pass. Carpenter has no interest in welding but has enough skill to pull it off. I went to school and did my practical for 3 years to be a journeyman. I am now in a shop where I have way less competent people next to me but we are all equal according to the CWB.? Guess you can tell I am not a fan of the CWB. Luckily I have moved on to a desk job later in life.
@quinnhowlett6974 жыл бұрын
Just because the carpenter doesn’t have any interest in welding doesn’t mean that he is incompetent. I’m a welder in Ontario Canada, i have all my CWB tickets in SMAW, FCAW/MCAW, and I have pressure tickets through the BCA. The proper CWB process is the visual and then gets x-ray. If it passes x-Ray then you’re certified. So obviously that carpenter was competent
@mikeford9632 жыл бұрын
Do you have any idea how many guys in this country ONLY have CWB tickets? The only training they have is how to do those tests. Quite often there will be only a single Journeyman in a shop that teaches all the rookies how to do and what to do. Just not the WHY to do.

Is it still "G" if it is and fillet and groove or is it "GF" position?
@roadkillfrog55914 жыл бұрын
We have one side fillet on side groove so it's gf flat, vertical, overhead is half inch gap, horizontal is 5/16" gap
@Goeese14 жыл бұрын
@@roadkillfrog5591 Where I come from it is still called a 1G, 2G, 3G, 4G (when you have both a groove and a fillet), but it qualifies you for both the Groove and Fillet, as opposed to doing a test for each

These plate tests are called FG's. The weld is called a Filet-Groove as you weld the filet side first, then the fill in the resulting groove weld. The weld position nomenclature stays the same though.
