My teachers name was Johnny Napier. He was in the navy and taught navy divers, and he welded for NASA. He had us do our test very similar to this in 2007. I was definitely lucky to have the honor of him teaching me how to weld. I never could make a good living from it, but I've helped more people than I can count and myself many times. I love welding. It's just something about it that makes me excited. When I smell that smell, it does something to me. I wish I could've found a job and made a career from it. One thing I tell my students about overlapping passes is to look at the previous bead, you will notice a portion of the prior bead to be "lit up" by the arc and cover that area with the new bead by watching the toe on the new bead. Similar to what is done on the soapstone mark. Another great video!.

Welders today are having high tech welding machines. Back in the early 90 we had simple 380V industrial welder machines with a remote adjusting knob. Went through all the tests for x-ray. Not a walk in the park but confident grew with practice. For the root gap we measured it to be the diameter of the weld stick core. No back plate. Nice to see your videos 👍🏻

Frank-T thank you sir, I also learned in the 90’s on an old transformer. Gap was the diameter of the uncoated rod. 6010 root 7018 fill and cap. Things have changed a lot since then.

One thing I can tell everyone is that if you have to stop during your actual test you’re gonna send in, make sure it’s in the middle / close to it !!!!! They will cut and bend 1 inch in from the end and cut a 3/8 bend strip out, so to make sure you have the best chance to pass do that:)
@resirvoirdog942 жыл бұрын
I remember asking some coworkers where the strips would be taken out, and they kind of laughed it off and said basically pretend like it's getting x rayed. Which is a take, but, to anyone stressing about taking a test, you can reassure yourself that you're absolutely giving yourself the best possible chance by avoiding restarts in those coupon zones.

Things that I do that seem to help, try to get the part, plate, or whatever hot first. just heat the metal a bit, the wire seems to go in smoother. As well as make sure you are dragging the wire as opposed to pushing. Listening to how the wire interacts with the metal can tell you a lot as well. If it's jumpy and spatters, you might have wire speed to fast, it should sound smooth when welding. Just some things that help me

GrowYourOwn yes, you can have bad wire, especially if it has been stored improperly. What settings and diameter wire are you running. Also, make sure you are on straight polarity meaning your “ground clamp” is on the positive terminal and your gun is hooked to the negative.

Dennis Young I use a tempil stick but depending on the procedure you can use an infrared gun or thermal couplers. Tempil is usually 1° plus or minus with its accuracy. Infrared can be plus or minus 10° especially on reflective surfaces.

For non code welding in the garage... tube chassis or whatever requiring multipass or many welds, say 300F +-10F is close enough right?

So I’m a manufacturing guy more with 20 years in fabrication and GMAW/GTAW/laser etc but hardly any SMAW or flux core although I have been doing a lot more lately with my own business. I want to get a certification for structural/pipe or something pretty general purpose and was thinking LA city or AWS D1.1. Anyone have any suggestions? My business i do mostly general fabrication and repair both in the shop and mobile. I figured if I get a certificate and an engine driven welder I can probably pick and choose the work a bit more versus having to do every crappy job that comes along 😂. Thanks ahead for any suggestions!

Failed my first test and its because I didn't grind the little Skagit had in the root pass. Kind of bummed out but no one else passed out of 5 guys so I don't feel to bad

Hello. Can you help a brother out with a cement lined pipe test. I have one after the holidays. I got a few sections of pipe to practice on at home. The rot is very tricky. Hope I pass it

Good luck Moshe! I've welded some of it but it wasn't tested and wasn't fun.
