Former Canada defender Rhian Wilkinson has been appointed as the new manager of the Wales women's national football team. The 41-year-old, who won 183 caps and two Olympic bronze medals as a player, has signed a three-year deal. Wilkinson previously led the Portland Thorns to the 2022 National Women's Soccer League Championship in her first season as head coach. However, she resigned from her post in December 2022 following an investigation into an alleged relationship with a Portland player. Wilkinson, who has a Welsh mother and lived in Wales as a child, expressed her excitement about the role and her aim to help Wales qualify for their first major tournament. The appointment comes after the resignation of Gemma Grainger, who left Wales to take charge of Norway. The draw for Euro 2025 qualifying will be made on 5 March, and Wales will be hoping to secure a spot in the tournament.
